Josiah Reigns in Judah^(A)

22 Josiah ^(B)was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of ^(C)Bozkath. ² And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he ^(D)did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law^(E)

^3 (F)Now it came to pass, in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the scribe, the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the house of the Lord, saying: ⁴ “Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the money which has been ^(G)brought into the house of the Lord, which ^(H)the doorkeepers have gathered from the people. ⁵ And let them ^(I)deliver it into the hand of those doing the work, who are the overseers in the house of the Lord; let them give it to those who are in the house of the Lord doing the work, to repair the damages of the house— ⁶ to carpenters and builders and masons—and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house. ⁷ However ^(J)there need be no accounting made with them of the money delivered into their hand, because they deal faithfully.”

⁸ Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, ^(K)“I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. ⁹ So Shaphan the scribe went to the king, bringing the king word, saying, “Your servants have ^[a]gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of those who do the work, who oversee the house of the Lord.” ¹⁰ Then Shaphan the scribe showed the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it before the king.

¹¹ Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes. ¹² Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, ^(L)Ahikam the son of Shaphan, ^[b]Achbor the son of Michaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king, saying, ¹³ “Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is ^(M)the wrath of the Lord that is aroused against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”

¹⁴ So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of ^(N)Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. (She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke with her. ¹⁵ Then she said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Tell the man who sent you to Me, ¹⁶ “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, ^(O)I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants—all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read— ^17 (P)because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore My wrath shall be aroused against this place and shall not be quenched.’ ” ’ ¹⁸ But as for ^(Q)the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, in this manner you shall speak to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “Concerning the words which you have heard— ¹⁹ because your ^(R)heart was tender, and you ^(S)humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become ^(T)a desolation and ^(U)a curse, and you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you,” says the Lord. ²⁰ “Surely, therefore, I will ^[c]gather you to your fathers, and you ^(V)shall ^[d]be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the calamity which I will bring on this place.” ’ ” So they brought back word to the king.

The Fall of Jerusalem

²¹ And it came to pass in the twelfth year ^(A)of our captivity, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, ^(B)that one who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, ^(C)“The city has been ^[a]captured!”

²² Now ^(D)the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the man came who had escaped. And He had ^(E)opened my mouth; so when he came to me in the morning, my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

The Cause of Judah’s Ruin

²³ Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: ²⁴ “Son of man, ^(F)they who inhabit those ^(G)ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ^(H)‘Abraham was only one, and he inherited the land. ^(I)But we are many; the land has been given to us as a ^(J)possession.’

²⁵ “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: ^(K)“You eat meat with blood, you ^(L)lift up your eyes toward your idols, and ^(M)shed blood. Should you then possess the ^(N)land? ²⁶ You rely on your sword, you commit abominations, and you ^(O)defile one another’s wives. Should you then possess the land?” ’

²⁷ “Say thus to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “As I live, surely ^(P)those who are in the ruins shall fall by the sword, and the one who is in the open field ^(Q)I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and ^(R)caves shall die of the pestilence. ^28 (S)For I will make the land most desolate, ^[b]her ^(T)arrogant strength shall cease, and ^(U)the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that no one will pass through. ²⁹ Then they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.” ’

Hearing and Not Doing

³⁰ “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they ^(V)speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ ³¹ So ^(W)they come to you as people do, they ^(X)sit before you as My people, and they ^(Y)hear your words, but they do not do them; ^(Z)for with their mouth they show much love, but ^(AA)their hearts pursue their own gain. ³² Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do ^(AB)not do them. ^33 (AC)And when this comes to pass—surely it will come—then ^(AD)they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

³⁹ And He spoke a parable to them: ^(A)“Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? ^40 (B)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. ^41 (C)And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? ⁴² Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit^(D)

^43 (E)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. ⁴⁴ For ^(F)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. ^45 (G)A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil ^[a]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out ^(H)of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build on the Rock^(I)

^46 (J)“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? ^47 (K)Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: ⁴⁸ He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was ^[b]founded on the rock. ⁴⁹ But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it ^[c]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”
