Isaiah Assures Deliverance(A)

19 And (B)so it was, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, covered himself with (C)sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord. 2 Then he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. 3 And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: ‘This day is a day of trouble, and rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth, but there is no strength to [a]bring them forth. 4 (D)It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to (E)reproach the living God, and will (F)rebuke the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’ ”

5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6 (G)And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Do not be (H)afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the (I)servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. 7 Surely I will send (J)a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” ’ ”

Sennacherib’s Threat and Hezekiah’s Prayer(K)

8 Then the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he heard that he had departed (L)from Lachish. 9 And (M)the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Look, he has come out to make war with you.” So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: ‘Do not let your God (N)in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 11 Look! You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered? 12 (O)Have the gods of the nations delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, Gozan and Haran and Rezeph, and the people of (P)Eden who were in Telassar? 13 (Q)Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?’ ”

14 (R)And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. 15 Then Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said: “O Lord God of Israel, the One (S)who dwells between the cherubim, (T)You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 (U)Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear; (V)open Your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, (W)which he has sent to reproach the living God. 17 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were (X)not gods, but (Y)the work of men’s hands—wood and stone. Therefore they destroyed them. 19 Now therefore, O Lord our God, I pray, save us from his hand, (Z)that all the kingdoms of the earth may (AA)know that You are the Lord God, You alone.”

The Word of the Lord Concerning Sennacherib(AB)

20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: (AC)‘Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, (AD)I have heard.’ 21 This is the word which the Lord has spoken concerning him:

‘The virgin, (AE)the daughter of Zion,
Has despised you, laughed you to scorn;
The daughter of Jerusalem
(AF)Has shaken her head behind your back!

22 ‘Whom have you reproached and blasphemed?
Against whom have you raised your voice,
And lifted up your eyes on high?
Against (AG)the Holy One of Israel.
23 (AH)By your messengers you have reproached the Lord,
And said: (AI)“By the multitude of my chariots
I have come up to the height of the mountains,
To the limits of Lebanon;
I will cut down its tall cedars
And its choice cypress trees;
I will enter the extremity of its borders,
To its fruitful forest.
24 I have dug and drunk strange water,
And with the soles of my feet I have (AJ)dried up
All the brooks of defense.”

25 ‘Did you not hear long ago
How (AK)I made it,
From ancient times that I formed it?
Now I have brought it to pass,
That (AL)you should be
For crushing fortified cities into heaps of ruins.
26 Therefore their inhabitants had little power;
They were dismayed and confounded;
They were as the grass of the field
And the green herb,
As (AM)the grass on the housetops
And grain blighted before it is grown.

27 ‘But (AN)I know your dwelling place,
Your going out and your coming in,
And your rage against Me.
28 Because your rage against Me and your tumult
Have come up to My ears,
Therefore (AO)I will put My hook in your nose
And My bridle in your lips,
And I will turn you back
(AP)By the way which you came.

29 ‘This shall be a (AQ)sign to you:

‘You shall eat this year such as grows [b]of itself,
And in the second year what springs from the same;
Also in the third year sow and reap,
Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.
30 (AR)And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah
Shall again take root downward,
And bear fruit upward.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant,
And those who escape from Mount Zion.
(AS)The zeal of the Lord [c]of hosts will do this.’

32 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria:

‘He shall (AT)not come into this city,
Nor shoot an arrow there,
Nor come before it with shield,
Nor build a siege mound against it.
33 By the way that he came,
By the same shall he return;
And he shall not come into this city,’
Says the Lord.
34 ‘For (AU)I will (AV)defend this city, to save it
For My own sake and (AW)for My servant David’s sake.’ ”

Sennacherib’s Defeat and Death(AX)

35 And (AY)it came to pass on a certain night that the [d]angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead. 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at (AZ)Nineveh. 37 Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons (BA)Adrammelech and Sharezer (BB)struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then (BC)Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

2 使 家 宰 以 利 亞 敬 和 書 記 舍 伯 那 ， 並 祭 司 中 的 長 老 ， 都 披 上 麻 布 ， 去 見 亞 摩 斯 的 兒 子 先 知 以 賽 亞 ，

3 對 他 說 ： 希 西 家 如 此 說 ： 今 日 是 急 難 、 責 罰 、 凌 辱 的 日 子 ， 就 如 婦 人 將 要 生 產 嬰 孩 ， 卻 沒 有 力 量 生 產 。

11 你 總 聽 說 亞 述 諸 王 向 列 國 所 行 的 ， 乃 是 盡 行 滅 絕 ， 難 道 你 還 能 得 救 麼 ？

12 我 列 祖 所 毀 滅 的 ， 就 是 歌 散 、 哈 蘭 、 利 色 ， 和 屬 提 • 拉 撒 的 伊 甸 人 ， 這 些 國 的 神 何 曾 拯 救 這 些 國 呢 ？

13 哈 馬 的 王 、 亞 珥 拔 的 王 、 西 法 瓦 音 城 的 王 、 希 拿 ， 和 以 瓦 的 王 都 在 哪 裡 呢 ？

18 將 列 國 的 神 像 都 扔 在 火 裡 ； 因 為 他 本 不 是 神 ， 乃 是 人 手 所 造 的 ， 是 木 頭 石 頭 的 ， 所 以 滅 絕 他 。

22 你 辱 罵 誰 ？ 褻 瀆 誰 ？ 揚 起 聲 來 ， 高 舉 眼 目 攻 擊 誰 呢 ？ 乃 是 攻 擊 以 色 列 的 聖 者 ！

23 你 藉 你 的 使 者 辱 罵 主 ， 並 說 ： 我 率 領 許 多 戰 車 上 山 頂 ， 到 利 巴 嫩 極 深 之 處 ； 我 要 砍 伐 其 中 高 大 的 香 柏 樹 和 佳 美 的 松 樹 ； 我 必 上 極 高 之 處 ， 進 入 肥 田 的 樹 林 。

24 我 已 經 在 外 邦 挖 井 喝 水 ； 我 必 用 腳 掌 踏 乾 埃 及 的 一 切 河 。

25 耶 和 華 說 ， 我 早 先 所 做 的 ， 古 時 所 立 的 ， 就 是 現 在 藉 你 使 堅 固 城 荒 廢 ， 變 為 亂 堆 ， 這 事 你 豈 沒 有 聽 見 麼 ？

26 所 以 其 中 的 居 民 力 量 甚 小 ， 驚 惶 羞 愧 。 他 們 像 野 草 ， 像 青 菜 ， 如 房 頂 上 的 草 ， 又 如 未 長 成 而 枯 乾 的 禾 稼 。

27 你 坐 下 ， 你 出 去 ， 你 進 來 ， 你 向 我 發 烈 怒 ， 我 都 知 道 。

28 因 你 向 我 發 烈 怒 ， 又 因 你 狂 傲 的 話 達 到 我 耳 中 ， 我 就 要 用 鉤 子 鉤 上 你 的 鼻 子 ， 把 嚼 環 放 在 你 口 裡 ， 使 你 從 你 來 的 路 轉 回 去 。

29 以 色 列 人 哪 ， 我 賜 你 們 一 個 證 據 ： 你 們 今 年 要 吃 自 生 的 ， 明 年 也 要 吃 自 長 的 ； 至 於 後 年 ， 你 們 要 耕 種 收 割 ， 栽 植 葡 萄 園 ， 吃 其 中 的 果 子 。

30 猶 大 家 所 逃 脫 餘 剩 的 ， 仍 要 往 下 扎 根 ， 向 上 結 果 。

31 必 有 餘 剩 的 民 從 耶 路 撒 冷 而 出 ； 必 有 逃 脫 的 人 從 錫 安 山 而 來 。 耶 和 華 的 熱 心 必 成 就 這 事 。

32 所 以 ， 耶 和 華 論 亞 述 王 如 此 說 ： 他 必 不 得 來 到 這 城 ， 也 不 在 這 裡 射 箭 ， 不 得 拿 盾 牌 到 城 前 ， 也 不 築 壘 攻 城 。

33 他 從 哪 條 路 來 ， 必 從 那 條 路 回 去 ， 必 不 得 來 到 這 城 。 這 是 耶 和 華 說 的 。

34 因 我 為 自 己 的 緣 故 ， 又 為 我 僕 人 大 衛 的 緣 故 ， 必 保 護 拯 救 這 城 。

35 當 夜 ， 耶 和 華 的 使 者 出 去 ， 在 亞 述 營 中 殺 了 十 八 萬 五 千 人 。 清 早 有 人 起 來 ， 一 看 ， 都 是 死 屍 了 。

36 亞 述 王 西 拿 基 立 就 拔 營 回 去 ， 住 在 尼 尼 微 。

Consulta al profeta Isaías (Is 37,1-9a)

19 Cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus ropas, se vistió de sayal y fue al Templo del Señor. 2 Al mismo tiempo envió al mayordomo de palacio Jelcías, al secretario Sobná y a los sacerdotes más ancianos, vestidos de sayal, a ver al profeta Isaías, hijo de Amós, 3 y a comunicarle lo siguiente:

— Esto dice Ezequías: “Vivimos hoy momentos de angustia, de castigo y de ignominia, como si el hijo fuera a nacer y la madre no tuviera fuerzas para alumbrarlo. 4 Ojalá el Señor, tu Dios, haya escuchado las palabras del copero mayor enviado por su amo, el rey de Asiria, para insultar al Dios vivo, y lo castigue por esas palabras que el Señor, tu Dios, ha oído. Por tu parte, intercede por el resto que aún subsiste”.

5 Los servidores del rey Ezequías fueron a ver al profeta Isaías 6 que les dijo:

— Esto responderéis a vuestro señor: “Así dice el Señor: Que no te asusten las palabras insultantes que has oído proferir a los oficiales del rey de Asiria contra mí. 7 Yo mismo le voy a infundir un espíritu tal que, al oír cierta noticia, tendrá que regresar a su país donde lo haré morir a espada”.

8 Regresó el copero mayor y, al enterarse de que el rey de Asiria se había retirado de Laquis para atacar Libná, fue allí a su encuentro. 9 Y es que el rey de Asiria había oído que Tirhacá, el rey de Etiopía, se había puesto en camino para plantarle batalla.

Nuevas amenazas de Senaquerib (2 Cr 37,9b-20)

Entonces, el rey de Asiria envió nuevos emisarios a Ezequías con el siguiente mensaje:

10 — Decid a Ezequías, el rey de Judá: “Que no te engañe tu Dios, en quien confías, asegurándote que Jerusalén no caerá en poder del rey de Asiria. 11 Seguro que has oído cómo han tratado los reyes de Asiria a todos los países que han consagrado al exterminio. ¿Y piensas que tú vas a librarte? 12 ¿Salvaron sus dioses a las naciones que mis antepasados destruyeron, a saber: Gozán, Jarán, Résef y los habitantes de Edén, en Telasar? 13 ¿Dónde están los reyes de Jamat, de Arpad, de Laír, de Sefarváin, de Ená y de Evá?”.

14 Ezequías tomó la carta traída por los mensajeros y la leyó. Luego subió al Templo, la abrió en presencia del Señor 15 y oró así:

Intervención de Isaías (Is 37,21-38)

20 Isaías, hijo de Amós, envió este mensaje a Ezequías:

— Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: He escuchado la súplica que me has dirigido a propósito de Senaquerib, el rey de Asiria. 21 Y esta es la palabra que el Señor pronuncia contra él:

Te desprecia y se burla de ti
una simple muchacha,
la ciudad de Sión;
te hace mofa a tus espaldas
la ciudad de Jerusalén.
22 ¿A quién insultas e injurias?
¿Contra quién levantas tu voz,
alzando altanera la mirada?
¡Contra el Santo de Israel!
23 Por medio de tus mensajeros
has insultado al Señor, diciendo:
“Gracias a mis carros numerosos
he subido a las cumbres más altas,
al corazón del Líbano;
he talado sus cedros más esbeltos,
sus más escogidos cipreses;
me adentré en su lugar más oculto,
en sus bosques más espesos.
24 Alumbré y bebí aguas extranjeras;
sequé bajo la planta de mis pies
todos los ríos de Egipto”.
25 ¿Acaso no te has enterado
de que hace tiempo lo tengo decidido.
Lo he planeado desde antaño
y ahora lo llevo a término?
Voy a reducir a escombros
todas las ciudades fortificadas.
26 Sus habitantes, impotentes,
espantados y humillados,
son como hierba del campo,
como césped de pastizal,
como verdín de los tejados,
como mies agostada antes de sazón.
27 Sé bien cuándo te sientas,
conozco tus idas y venidas,
y cuándo te enfureces contra mí.
28 Puesto que ha llegado a mis oídos
tu furia y tu arrogancia contra mí,
pondré mi garfio en tu nariz
y mi argolla en tu hocico,
y te haré volver por el camino
por donde habías venido.

29 Y esto, Ezequías, te servirá de señal: este año comeréis lo que retoñe, y el siguiente, lo que nazca sin sembrar, pero el tercer año sembraréis y cosecharéis; plantaréis viñas y comeréis sus frutos. 30 El resto superviviente de Judá volverá a echar raíces por abajo y a producir fruto por arriba, 31 pues de Jerusalén saldrá un resto, y habrá supervivientes en el monte Sión. El amor apasionado del Señor del universo lo cumplirá.

32 Por eso, así dice el Señor a propósito del rey de Asiria:

No entrará en esta ciudad,
no disparará flechas contra ella,
no la cercará con escudos,
ni la asaltará con rampas.
33 Se volverá por donde vino
y no entrará en esta ciudad
—oráculo del Señor—.
34 Protegeré esta ciudad para salvarla,
por mi honor y el de David, mi servidor.

35 Aquella misma noche salió el enviado del Señor, hirió a ciento ochenta mil hombres en el campamento asirio; al levantarse los asirios por la mañana no había más que cadáveres. 36 Senaquerib, el rey de Asiria, levantó el campamento, regresó a Nínive y se quedó allí. 37 Y un día, mientras estaba orando en el templo de su dios Nisroc, sus hijos Adramélec y Saréser lo asesinaron y huyeron al país de Ararat. Su hijo Asaradón le sucedió como rey.

Jerusalem’s Deliverance Foretold(A)

19 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore(B) his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2 He sent Eliakim(C) the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests,(D) all wearing sackcloth,(E) to the prophet Isaiah(F) son of Amoz. 3 They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment(G) of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4 It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule(H) the living God, and that he will rebuke(I) him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant(J) that still survives.”

5 When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid(K) of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed(L) me. 7 Listen! When he hears a certain report,(M) I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.(N)’”

8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish,(O) he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.(P)

9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,[a] was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10 “Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend(Q) on deceive(R) you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’ 11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver(S) them—the gods of Gozan,(T) Harran,(U) Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”(V)

Hezekiah’s Prayer(W)

14 Hezekiah received the letter(X) from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim,(Y) you alone(Z) are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 Give ear,(AA) Lord, and hear;(AB) open your eyes,(AC) Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.

17 “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods(AD) but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.(AE) 19 Now, Lord our God, deliver(AF) us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms(AG) of the earth may know(AH) that you alone, Lord, are God.”

Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib’s Fall(AI)(AJ)

20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard(AK) your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. 21 This is the word that the Lord has spoken against(AL) him:

“‘Virgin Daughter(AM) Zion
    despises(AN) you and mocks(AO) you.

    tosses her head(AP) as you flee.
22 Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?(AQ)
    Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride?
    Against the Holy One(AR) of Israel!
23 By your messengers
    you have ridiculed the Lord.
And you have said,(AS)
    “With my many chariots(AT)
I have ascended the heights of the mountains,
    the utmost heights of Lebanon.
I have cut down(AU) its tallest cedars,
    the choicest of its junipers.
I have reached its remotest parts,
    the finest of its forests.
24 I have dug wells in foreign lands
    and drunk the water there.
With the soles of my feet
    I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”

25 “‘Have you not heard?(AV)
    Long ago I ordained it.
In days of old I planned(AW) it;
    now I have brought it to pass,
that you have turned fortified cities
    into piles of stone.(AX)
26 Their people, drained of power,(AY)
    are dismayed(AZ) and put to shame.
They are like plants in the field,
    like tender green shoots,(BA)
like grass sprouting on the roof,
    scorched(BB) before it grows up.

27 “‘But I know(BC) where you are
    and when you come and go
    and how you rage against me.
28 Because you rage against me
    and because your insolence has reached my ears,
I will put my hook(BD) in your nose
    and my bit(BE) in your mouth,
and I will make you return(BF)
    by the way you came.’

29 “This will be the sign(BG) for you, Hezekiah:

“This year you will eat what grows by itself,(BH)
    and the second year what springs from that.
But in the third year sow and reap,
    plant vineyards(BI) and eat their fruit.
30 Once more a remnant(BJ) of the kingdom of Judah
    will take root(BK) below and bear fruit above.
31 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,(BL)
    and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.(BM)

“The zeal(BN) of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

32 “Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:

“‘He will not enter this city
    or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
    or build a siege ramp against it.
33 By the way that he came he will return;(BO)
    he will not enter this city,
declares the Lord.
34 I will defend(BP) this city and save it,
    for my sake and for the sake of David(BQ) my servant.’”

35 That night the angel of the Lord(BR) went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!(BS) 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew.(BT) He returned to Nineveh(BU) and stayed there.

37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek(BV) and Sharezer killed him with the sword,(BW) and they escaped to the land of Ararat.(BX) And Esarhaddon(BY) his son succeeded him as king.
