Atalía y Joás(A)

11 Cuando Atalía, madre de Ocozías, vio que su hijo había muerto, tomó medidas para eliminar a toda la familia real. 2 Pero Josaba, que era hija del rey Jorán y hermana de Ocozías, raptó a Joás, hijo de Ocozías, cuando los príncipes estaban a punto de ser asesinados. Metiéndolo en un dormitorio con su nodriza, logró esconderlo de Atalía, de modo que no lo mataron. 3 Seis años estuvo Joás escondido con su nodriza en el Templo del Señor, mientras Atalía reinaba en el país.

4 En el séptimo año, el sacerdote Joyadá ordenó a los comandantes de cien soldados, a los quereteos y a los guardias, que se presentaran ante él en el Templo del Señor. Allí en el Templo hizo un pacto con ellos y les tomó juramento. Luego mostró al hijo del rey 5 y dio estas órdenes: «Hagan lo siguiente: una tercera parte de los que están de servicio el sábado vigilará el palacio real. 6 Otra tercera parte vigilará la puerta de Sur y la otra tercera parte la puerta detrás del cuartel de los guardias. Harán la guardia del Templo por turnos. 7 Los dos grupos que están libres el sábado protegerán al rey en el Templo del Señor. 8 Arma en mano, rodeen por completo al rey. Si alguien se atreve a penetrar las filas,[a] mátenlo. ¡No dejen solo al rey, vaya donde vaya!».

9 Los comandantes de cien soldados cumplieron con todo lo que el sacerdote Joyadá había ordenado. Cada uno reunió a sus hombres, tanto a los que estaban de servicio el sábado como a los que estaban libres; entonces se presentaron ante el sacerdote Joyadá. 10 Este repartió entre los comandantes las lanzas y los escudos del rey David, que estaban guardados en el Templo del Señor. 11 Arma en mano, los guardias tomaron sus puestos alrededor del rey, cerca del altar y desde el lado sur hasta el lado norte del Templo.

12 Entonces Joyadá sacó al hijo del rey, le puso la corona y le entregó una copia del pacto.[b] Luego lo ungieron, y todos aplaudieron, gritando: «¡Viva el rey!».

13 Cuando Atalía oyó la gritería de los guardias y de la tropa, fue al Templo del Señor, donde estaba la gente. 14 Al ver que el rey estaba de pie junto a la columna, como era la costumbre, y que los oficiales y músicos estaban a su lado, y que todo el pueblo se alegraba al son de las trompetas, Atalía se rasgó las vestiduras y gritó: «¡Traición! ¡Traición!».

15 Entonces el sacerdote Joyadá, como no quería que la mataran en el Templo del Señor, dio órdenes a los comandantes que estaban al mando de las fuerzas. Les dijo: «¡Sáquenla de entre las filas! Y, si alguien se pone de su lado, ¡mátenlo a filo de espada!». 16 Así que la apresaron y la llevaron al palacio por la puerta de la caballería; allí la mataron.

17 Luego Joyadá hizo un pacto entre el Señor, el rey y la gente para que fueran el pueblo del Señor; también hizo un pacto entre el rey y el pueblo. 18 Entonces todo el pueblo fue al templo de Baal y lo derribó. Destruyeron los altares y las imágenes, y frente a los altares degollaron a Matán, sacerdote de Baal.

El sacerdote Joyadá apostó guardias en el Templo del Señor 19 y, acompañado de los comandantes y de los quereteos, los guardias y todo el pueblo, llevó al rey desde el Templo del Señor hasta el palacio real. Entraron juntos por la puerta del cuartel y Joás se sentó en el trono real. 20 Todo el pueblo estaba alegre y la ciudad, tranquila, pues habían matado a Atalía a filo de espada en el palacio.

21 Joás tenía siete años cuando comenzó a reinar.

Athaliah and Joash(A)

11 When Athaliah(B) the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family. 2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram[a] and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash(C) son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed.(D) 3 He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a hundred, the Carites(E) and the guards and had them brought to him at the temple of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at the temple of the Lord. Then he showed them the king’s son. 5 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath(F)—a third of you guarding the royal palace,(G) 6 a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding the temple— 7 and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king. 8 Station yourselves around the king, each of you with weapon in hand. Anyone who approaches your ranks[b] is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”

9 The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields(H) that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the Lord. 11 The guards, each with weapon in hand, stationed themselves around the king—near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.

12 Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant(I) and proclaimed him king. They anointed(J) him, and the people clapped their hands(K) and shouted, “Long live the king!”(L)

13 When Athaliah heard the noise made by the guards and the people, she went to the people at the temple of the Lord. 14 She looked and there was the king, standing by the pillar,(M) as the custom was. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets.(N) Then Athaliah tore(O) her robes and called out, “Treason! Treason!”(P)

15 Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops: “Bring her out between the ranks[c] and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the temple(Q) of the Lord.” 16 So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter(R) the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.(S)

17 Jehoiada then made a covenant(T) between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.(U) 18 All the people of the land went to the temple(V) of Baal and tore it down. They smashed(W) the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest(X) of Baal in front of the altars.

Then Jehoiada the priest posted guards at the temple of the Lord. 19 He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites,(Y) the guards and all the people of the land, and together they brought the king down from the temple of the Lord and went into the palace, entering by way of the gate of the guards. The king then took his place on the royal throne. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced,(Z) and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the palace.

21 Joash[d] was seven years old when he began to reign.[e]

Athaliah Reigns in Judah(A)

11 When (B)Athaliah (C)the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was (D)dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs. 2 But [a]Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of (E)Ahaziah, took [b]Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being murdered; and they hid him and his nurse in the bedroom, from Athaliah, so that he was not killed. 3 So he was hidden with her in the house of the Lord for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 In (G)the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of hundreds—of the bodyguards and the [c]escorts—and brought them into the house of the Lord to him. And he made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the house of the Lord, and showed them the king’s son. 5 Then he commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall do: One-third of you who [d]come on duty (H)on the Sabbath shall be keeping watch over the king’s house, 6 one-third shall be at the gate of Sur, and one-third at the gate behind the escorts. You shall keep the watch of the house, lest it be broken down. 7 The two [e]contingents of you who go off duty on the Sabbath shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord for the king. 8 But you shall surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within range, let him be put to death. You are to be with the king as he goes out and as he comes in.”

9 (I)So the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each of them took his men who were to be on duty on the Sabbath, with those who were going off duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 And the priest gave the captains of hundreds the spears and shields which had belonged to King David, (J)that were in the temple of the Lord. 11 Then the escorts stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, all around the king, from the right [f]side of the temple to the left side of the temple, by the altar and the house. 12 And he brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the (K)Testimony;[g] they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, (L)“Long live the king!”

Death of Athaliah(M)

13 (N)Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the escorts and the people, she came to the people in the temple of the Lord. 14 When she looked, there was the king standing by (O)a pillar according to custom; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. So Athaliah tore her clothes and cried out, “Treason! Treason!”

15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the army, and said to them, “Take her outside [h]under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her.” For the priest had said, “Do not let her be killed in the house of the Lord.” 16 So they seized her; and she went by way of the horses’ entrance into the king’s house, and there she was killed.

17 (P)Then Jehoiada (Q)made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also (R)between the king and the people. 18 And all the people of the land went to the (S)temple of Baal, and tore it down. They thoroughly (T)broke in pieces its altars and [i]images, and (U)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And (V)the priest appointed [j]officers over the house of the Lord. 19 Then he took the captains of hundreds, the bodyguards, the escorts, and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and went by way of the gate of the escorts to the king’s house. Then he sat on the throne of the kings. 20 So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet, for they had slain Athaliah with the sword in the king’s house. 21 Jehoash was (W)seven years old when he became king.
