²⁵ When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”

“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.

²² “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent^[a] of silver and two sets of clothing.’”^(A)

³ Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan^(A) has so filled your heart^(B) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit^(C) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?^{(D) 4} Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?^(E) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”^(F)

²⁶ Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,^(A) the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.^(B)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” ²⁸ But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. ²⁹ Since Judas had charge of the money,^(C) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,^(D) or to give something to the poor.^{(E) 30} As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.^(F)

²¹ And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”^(A)

¹⁵ and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.^{(A) 16} From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

³¹ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before^(A) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy^(B) for unjust gain.^(C)

¹⁴ Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”

“From a distant land,” Hezekiah replied. “They came from Babylon.”
