The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life

⁸ One day Elisha went to Shunem.^(A) And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat.

¹⁸ Their territory included:

²⁹ But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

³ and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,^(A) and had a large number of servants.^(B) He was the greatest man^(C) among all the people of the East.^(D)

¹¹ One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. ¹² He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.”^(A) So he called her, and she stood before him.

³ But he insisted^(A) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.^(B) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,^(C) and they ate.^(D)

³ Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag,^(A) a Shunammite,^(B) and brought her to the king.

³² Now Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy^(A) man.

²⁰ “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.”
