¹⁶ And he said, “At this season, ^(A)about this time next year, you shall embrace a son.” And she said, “No, my lord, ^(B)O man of God; ^(C)do not lie to your servant.”

¹⁰ The Lord said, “I will surely return to you ^(A)about this time next year, and ^(B)Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.

²⁸ Then she said, “Did I ask my lord for a son? ^(A)Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me?’”

¹³ But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for ^(A)your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and ^(B)you shall call his name John.

^12 (A)So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, ^(B)“After I am worn out, and ^(C)my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” ¹³ The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ ^14 (D)Is anything too hard^[a] for the Lord? ^(E)At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” ¹⁵ But Sarah denied it,^[b] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

¹⁸ And Zechariah said to the angel, ^(A)“How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” ¹⁹ And the angel answered him, “I am ^(B)Gabriel. ^(C)I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. ²⁰ And behold, ^(D)you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”

²¹ But ^(A)I will establish my covenant with Isaac, ^(B)whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.”

¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, ^(A)“What have you against me, O ^(B)man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!”
