The People of Nineveh Repent

⁶ The word reached^[a] the king of Nineveh, and ^(A)he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, ^(B)and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, ^(C)“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor ^(D)beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water,

²⁴ Yet ^(A)neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, ^(B)nor did they tear their garments.

^19 (A)because your heart was penitent, and you ^(B)humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard how I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become ^(C)a desolation and ^(D)a curse, and you ^(E)have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord.

⁶ Then Joshua ^(A)tore his clothes and ^(B)fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put ^(C)dust on their heads.
