⁸ Elijah took his cloak,^(A) rolled it up and struck^(B) the water with it. The water divided^(C) to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry^(D) ground.

The Call of Elisha

¹⁹ So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak^(A) around him.

¹⁴ So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant^(A) went ahead^(B) of them. ¹⁵ Now the Jordan^(C) is at flood stage^(D) all during harvest.^(E) Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, ¹⁶ the water from upstream stopped flowing.^(F) It piled up in a heap^(G) a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan,^(H) while the water flowing down^(I) to the Sea of the Arabah^(J) (that is, the Dead Sea^(K)) was completely cut off.^(L) So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.^{(M) 17} The priests^(N) who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground,^(O) while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.^(P)

²¹ Then Moses stretched out his hand^(A) over the sea,^(B) and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind^(C) and turned it into dry land.^(D) The waters were divided,^{(E) 22} and the Israelites went through the sea^(F) on dry ground,^(G) with a wall^(H) of water on their right and on their left.

¹⁴ He took the cloak^(A) that had fallen from Elijah and struck^(B) the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.

²⁹ By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.^(A)

¹³ When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face^(A) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
