³⁷ One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek^(A) and Sharezer killed him with the sword,^(B) and they escaped to the land of Ararat.^(C) And Esarhaddon^(D) his son succeeded him as king.

² they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, “Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon^(A) king of Assyria, who brought us here.”^(B)

⁴ and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month^(A) the ark came to rest on the mountains^(B) of Ararat.^(C)

⁷ Listen! When he hears a certain report,^(A) I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.^(B)’”

³⁷ So Sennacherib^(A) king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh^(B) and stayed there.

²¹ And the Lord sent an angel,^(A) who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.^(B)

¹⁹ They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of human hands.^(A)
