God’s Charge Against Israel

Hear the word of the Lord,

For the Lord brings a (A)charge[a] against the inhabitants of the land:

“There is no truth or mercy
Or (B)knowledge of God in the land.
By swearing and lying,
Killing and stealing and committing adultery,
They break all restraint,
With bloodshed [b]upon bloodshed.

With the beasts of the field
And the birds of the air;

26 (R)I would have said, “I will dash them in pieces,

That they would consider their (U)latter end!
30 How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock (V)had sold them,
And the Lord had surrendered them?
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,
(W)Even our enemies themselves being judges.
32 For (X)their vine is of the vine of Sodom

34 Is this not (AA)laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up among My treasures?

37 He will say: (AG)‘Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise and help you,
And be your refuge.

39 ‘Now see that (AH)I, even I, am He,
And (AI)there is no God besides Me;
(AJ)I kill and I make alive;
I wound and I heal;
Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
40 For I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, “As I live forever,
41 (AK)If I [e]whet My glittering sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
I will render vengeance to My enemies,
And repay those who hate Me.
42 I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
And My sword shall devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the heads of the leaders of the enemy.” ’

43 “Rejoice,(AL) O Gentiles, with His [f]people;
For He will (AM)avenge the blood of His servants,
And render vengeance to His adversaries;
He (AN)will provide atonement for His land and His people.”

44 So Moses came with [g]Joshua the son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 and he said to them: (AO)“Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your (AP)children to be careful to observe—all the words of this law. 47 For it is not a [h]futile thing for you, because it is your (AQ)life, and by this word you shall prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess.”

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 Then the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying: 49 (AR)“Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession; 50 and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be [i]gathered to your people, just as (AS)Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people; 51 because (AT)you trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of [j]Meribah Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin, because you (AU)did not hallow Me in the midst of the children of Israel. 52 (AV)Yet you shall see the land before you, though you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.”

15 And the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. 16 But (A)lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. 17 And I indeed will (B)harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them. So I will (C)gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained honor for Myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

19 And the Angel of God, (D)who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and (E)made the sea into dry land, and the waters were (F)divided. 22 So (G)the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were (H)a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24 Now it came to pass, in the morning (I)watch, that (J)the Lord looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He [a]troubled the army of the Egyptians. 25 And He [b]took off their chariot wheels, so that they drove them with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the Lord (K)fights for them against the Egyptians.”

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea (L)returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the Lord (M)overthrew[c] the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 Then (N)the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained. 29 But (O)the children of Israel had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30 So the Lord (P)saved[d] Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel (Q)saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

“Son of man, there were (A)two women,
The daughters of one mother.
(B)They committed harlotry in Egypt,
They committed harlotry in (C)their youth;
Their breasts were there embraced,
Their virgin bosom was there pressed.
Their names: [a]Oholah the elder and [b]Oholibah (D)her sister;
(E)They were Mine,
And they bore sons and daughters.
As for their names,
Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem is Oholibah.

The Older Sister, Samaria

“Oholah played the harlot even though she was Mine;
And she lusted for her lovers, the neighboring (F)Assyrians,
Who were clothed in purple,
Captains and rulers,
All of them desirable young men,
Horsemen riding on horses.
Thus she committed her harlotry with them,
All of them choice men of Assyria;
And with all for whom she lusted,
With all their idols, she defiled herself.
She has never given up her harlotry brought (G)from Egypt,
For in her youth they had lain with her,
Pressed her virgin bosom,
And poured out their immorality upon her.

“Therefore I have delivered her
Into the hand of her lovers,
Into the hand of the (H)Assyrians,
For whom she lusted.
10 They uncovered her nakedness,
Took away her sons and daughters,
And slew her with the sword;
She became a byword among women,
For they had executed judgment on her.

The Younger Sister, Jerusalem

11 “Now (I)although her sister Oholibah saw this, (J)she became more corrupt in her lust than she, and in her harlotry more corrupt than her sister’s harlotry.

12 “She lusted for the neighboring (K)Assyrians,
(L)Captains and rulers,
Clothed most gorgeously,
Horsemen riding on horses,
All of them desirable young men.
13 Then I saw that she was defiled;
Both took the same way.
14 But she increased her harlotry;
She looked at men portrayed on the wall,
Images of (M)Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion,
15 Girded with belts around their waists,
Flowing turbans on their heads,
All of them looking like captains,
In the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea,
The land of their nativity.
16 (N)As soon as her eyes saw them,
She lusted for them
And sent (O)messengers to them in Chaldea.
