Hazael Threatens Jerusalem

^17 (A)Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath, and took it; then ^(B)Hazael set his face to ^[a]go up to Jerusalem.

Death of Joash^(A)

²³ So it happened in the spring of the year that ^(B)the army of Syria came up against him; and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the leaders of the people from among the people, and sent all their ^[a]spoil to the king of Damascus. ²⁴ For the army of the Syrians ^(C)came with a small company of men; but the Lord ^(D)delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they ^(E)executed judgment against Joash.

⁵³ But ^(A)they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.

A Samaritan Village Rejects the Savior

⁵¹ Now it came to pass, when the time had come for ^(A)Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,

¹⁵ Then hear now the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah! Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you ^(A)wholly^[a] set ^(B)your faces to enter Egypt, and go to dwell there,

18 After this ^(B)it came to pass that David ^[a]attacked the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines.

¹³ and Beriah and ^(A)Shema, who were heads of their fathers’ houses of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove out the inhabitants of Gath.

¹² And Hazael said, “Why is my lord weeping?”

He answered, “Because I know ^(A)the evil that you will do to the children of Israel: Their strongholds you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword; and you ^(B)will dash their children, and rip open their women with child.”

¹³ So Hazael said, “But what ^(C)is your servant—a dog, that he should do this gross thing?”

And Elisha answered, ^(D)“The Lord has shown me that you will become king over Syria.”

¹⁴ Then he departed from Elisha, and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he answered, “He told me you would surely recover.” ¹⁵ But it happened on the next day that he took a thick cloth and dipped it in water, and spread it over his face so that he died; and Hazael reigned in his place.

^17 (A)It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will ^(B)kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, ^(C)Elisha will kill.
