⁸ When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the princes.”

Then Jehu ordered, “Put them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.”

²⁸ and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.

¹⁴ Then they sent word to Jezebel: “Naboth has been stoned to death.”

¹⁸ Joab sent David a full account of the battle. ¹⁹ He instructed the messenger: “When you have finished giving the king this account of the battle, ²⁰ the king’s anger may flare up, and he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you know they would shoot arrows from the wall? ²¹ Who killed Abimelek^(A) son of Jerub-Besheth^[a]? Didn’t a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the wall,^(B) so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then say to him, ‘Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.’”

²³ you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.^(A) Be sure to bury^(B) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.^(C) You must not desecrate^(D) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.
