²⁶ They dragged out the sacred pillar^[a] used in the worship of Baal and burned it.

²³ For they also built for themselves pagan shrines and set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

¹⁸ And they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them. But of course the Assyrians could destroy them! They were not gods at all—only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands.

² He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, but not to the same extent as his father and mother. He at least tore down the sacred pillar of Baal that his father had set up.

²¹ The Philistines had abandoned their idols there, so David and his men confiscated them.
