Ahab’s Seventy Sons Killed

10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote and sent letters to Samaria, to the rulers of ^[a]Jezreel, to the elders, and to ^[b]those who reared Ahab’s sons, saying:

^32 (A)For the ^[a]saying which he cried out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the ^[b]shrines on the high places which are in the cities of ^(B)Samaria, will surely come to pass.”

³⁰ Gideon had ^(A)seventy sons who were his own offspring, for he had many wives.

^9 (A)Then he searched for Ahaziah; and they caught him (he was hiding in Samaria), and brought him to Jehu. When they had killed him, they buried him, “because,” they said, “he is the son of ^(B)Jehoshaphat, who ^(C)sought the Lord with all his heart.”

So the house of Ahaziah had no one to assume power over the kingdom.

³ Then she said to her mistress, “If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy.”

⁸ And she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who were dwelling in the city with Naboth. ⁹ She wrote in the letters, saying,

¹¹ So the men of his city, the elders and nobles who were inhabitants of his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them. ^12 (C)They proclaimed a fast, and seated Naboth with high honor among the people. ¹³ And two men, scoundrels, came in and sat before him; and the scoundrels ^(D)witnessed against him, against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth has blasphemed God and the king!” ^(E)Then they took him outside the city and stoned him with stones, so that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.”

²⁸ So Omri rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. Then Ahab his son reigned in his place.

²⁴ And he bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver; then he built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, ^(A)Samaria,^[a] after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill.

¹⁴ He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who ^(A)rode on seventy young donkeys. He judged Israel eight years.
