⁹ Then he sent^(A) to Elijah a captain^(B) with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king says, ‘Come down!’”

³⁶ Some faced jeers and flogging,^(A) and even chains and imprisonment.^(B)

¹³ “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.”^{(A) 14} Then he sent^(B) horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.

¹¹ But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious^(A) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles^(B)

¹² One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.^(C)

³² Let this Messiah,^(A) this king of Israel,^(B) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

²⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(A) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^(B)

⁴¹ In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. ⁴² “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!^(A) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe^(B) in him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God rescue him^(C) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

²⁹ and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.^(A)

⁶⁸ and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”^(A)

³ Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison^(A) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,^(B)
