¹⁰ Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!” Then fire^(A) fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.

⁵⁴ When the disciples James and John^(A) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them^[a]?”^(B)

²⁵ He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

²⁹ for our “God is a consuming fire.”^[a](A)

²² The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,^(A)

³⁶ At the time^(A) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,^(B) Isaac and Israel, let it be known^(C) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.^{(D) 37} Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know^(E) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

³⁸ Then the fire^(F) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

⁵ If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.^(A) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.^(B)

¹⁶ While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens^(A) and burned up the sheep and the servants,^(B) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

²⁸ Then Moses said, “This is how you will know^(A) that the Lord has sent me^(B) to do all these things and that it was not my idea: ²⁹ If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.^{(C) 30} But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth^(D) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,^(E) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.^(F)”
