1 Der Älteste: der auserwählten Frau und ihren Kindern, die ich liebhabe in der Wahrheit, und nicht allein ich sondern auch alle, die die Wahrheit erkannt haben,
2 um der Wahrheit willen, die in uns bleibt und bei uns sein wird in Ewigkeit.
3 Gnade, Barmherzigkeit, Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und von dem HERRN Jesus Christus, dem Sohn des Vaters, in der Wahrheit und in der Liebe, sei mit euch!
4 Ich bin erfreut, daß ich gefunden habe unter deinen Kindern, die in der Wahrheit wandeln, wie denn wir ein Gebot vom Vater empfangen haben.
5 Und nun bitte ich dich, Frau (nicht als schriebe ich dir ein neues Gebot, sondern das wir gehabt haben von Anfang), daß wir uns untereinander lieben.
6 Und das ist die Liebe, daß wir wandeln nach seinem Gebot; das ist das Gebot, wie ihr gehört habt von Anfang, daß ihr in derselben wandeln sollt.
7 Denn viele Verführer sind in die Welt gekommen, die nicht bekennen Jesum Christum, daß er in das Fleisch gekommen ist. Das ist der Verführer und der Widerchrist.
8 Sehet euch vor, daß wir nicht verlieren, was wir erarbeitet haben, sondern vollen Lohn empfangen.
9 Wer übertritt und bleibt nicht in der Lehre Christi, der hat keinen Gott; wer in der Lehre Christi bleibt, der hat beide, den Vater und den Sohn.
10 So jemand zu euch kommt und bringt diese Lehre nicht, den nehmet nicht ins Haus und grüßet ihn auch nicht.
11 Denn wer ihn grüßt, der macht sich teilhaftig seiner bösen Werke.
12 Ich hatte euch viel zu schreiben, aber ich wollte nicht mit Briefen und Tinte; sondern ich hoffe, zu euch zu kommen und mündlich mit euch reden, auf daß unsere Freude vollkommen sei.
13 Es grüßen dich die Kinder deiner Schwester, der Auserwählten. Amen.

Über die Wahrheit und die Liebe (Kapitel 1)
Anschrift und Gruß
1 Als verantwortlicher Leiter wende ich mich heute an eure von Gott erwählte Gemeinde und an jeden Einzelnen von euch.[a] Ich liebe euch, weil ich durch die Wahrheit mit euch verbunden bin;[b] aber nicht nur ich, sondern auch alle anderen, die in Christus die Wahrheit erkannt haben. 2 Diese Wahrheit bleibt in uns und wird für immer und ewig bei uns sein. 3 Gnade, Erbarmen und Frieden wird uns auch künftig geschenkt von Gott, unserem Vater, und seinem Sohn Jesus Christus; so bleiben wir in Gottes Wahrheit und in seiner Liebe verbunden.
Aufrichtiger Glaube und die Liebe zum Mitmenschen
4 Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich in eurer Gemeinde einige kennen gelernt habe, die ihr Leben ganz an Gottes Wahrheit ausrichten, so wie er es uns geboten hat. 5 Alle in der Gemeinde möchte ich jetzt an sein Gebot erinnern: Wir sollen einander lieben. Ihr wisst ja, dass ich damit nichts Neues schreibe, sondern nur wiederhole, was Gott uns von Anfang an aufgetragen hat. 6 Diese Liebe zeigt sich darin, dass wir nach Gottes Geboten leben. Und sein Gebot ist dasselbe, das euch von Anfang an gesagt worden ist: Liebt einander! Davon sollt ihr euer ganzes Leben bestimmen lassen.
Warnung vor falschen Lehrern
7 Überall begegnen wir Menschen, die in der ganzen Welt ihre Irrlehren verbreiten. Sie behaupten, dass Jesus Christus nicht als Mensch aus Fleisch und Blut zu uns gekommen ist. Solche Leute sind Werkzeuge des größten Verführers und schlimmsten Feindes von Christus, des Antichristen. 8 Seht euch vor, dass ihr nicht verliert, was wir gemeinsam erarbeitet haben,[c] sondern dass ihr von Gott den vollen Lohn erhaltet.
9 Wer über das hinausgeht, was Christus uns gelehrt hat, der wendet sich von Gott ab. Nur wer sich an die Lehre von Christus hält, bleibt mit dem Vater und mit dem Sohn verbunden. 10 Sollte also jemand zu euch kommen, der euch etwas anderes erzählen will, den nehmt nicht bei euch auf und grüßt ihn nicht einmal. 11 Denn wer diesen Verführern auch nur Gutes wünscht, unterstützt sie und macht sich mitschuldig an all dem Bösen, was sie anrichten.
12 Ich habe noch so vieles auf dem Herzen, aber das möchte ich euch lieber persönlich sagen und nicht schreiben. Ich hoffe, bald bei euch zu sein. Dann können wir alles miteinander besprechen, und nichts wird unsere Freude trüben.
13 Alle, die hier zu der von Gott erwählten Gemeinde gehören, lassen euch herzlich grüßen.[d]

1 The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth, 2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us for ever:
3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from[a] Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, in truth and love.
Truth and Love
4 I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father. 5 But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.
7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist! 8 Be on your guard, so that you do not lose what we[b] have worked for, but may receive a full reward. 9 Everyone who does not abide in the teaching of Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God; whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 Do not receive into the house or welcome anyone who comes to you and does not bring this teaching; 11 for to welcome is to participate in the evil deeds of such a person.

12 Although I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink; instead I hope to come to you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
13 The children of your elect sister send you their greetings.[c]

To the lady chosen by God(B) and to her children, whom I love in the truth(C)—and not I only, but also all who know the truth(D)— 2 because of the truth,(E) which lives in us(F) and will be with us forever:
3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ,(G) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.
4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(H) just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(I) I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love:(J) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(K) As you have heard from the beginning,(L) his command is that you walk in love.
7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(M) as coming in the flesh,(N) have gone out into the world.(O) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(P) 8 Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(Q) 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(R) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(S) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(T) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(U) in their wicked work.
12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face,(V) so that our joy may be complete.(W)

11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
