21 Quindi Giosafat si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto con loro nella città di Davide. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Jehoram.
2 Egli aveva fratelli, figli di Giosafat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zaccaria, Azariahu, Mikael e Scefatiah; tutti questi erano figli di Giosafat, re d'Israele.
3 Il loro padre fece ad essi grandi doni di argento, oro e oggetti preziosi, insieme a città fortificate in Giuda, ma diede il regno a Jehoram, perché era il primogenito.
4 Ma quando Jehoram ebbe preso possesso del regno di suo padre e si fu rafforzato, uccise di spada tutti i suoi fratelli e anche alcuni capi d'Israele.
5 Jehoram aveva trentadue anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò otto anni in Gerusalemme.
6 Egli seguí la via dei re d'Israele come aveva fatto la casa di Achab, perché sua moglie era una figlia di Achab, e fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno.
7 Tuttavia l'Eterno non volle distruggere la casa di Davide, a motivo del patto che aveva stabilito con Davide e perché aveva promesso di dare a lui e ai suoi figli una lampada per sempre.
8 Durante i giorni del suo regno, Edom si ribellò al potere di Giuda e si diede un re.
9 Allora Jehoram partí con i suoi capi e con tutti i suoi carri, si levò quindi di notte e sconfisse gli Edomiti che avevano accerchiato lui e i capi dei carri.
10 Cosí Edom è stato ribelle al potere di Giuda fino al giorno d'oggi. In quel tempo anche Libnah si ribellò al suo potere, perché Jehoram aveva abbandonato l'Eterno, il DIO dei suoi padri.
11 Anche Jehoram fece degli alti luoghi sui monti di Giuda, spinse gli abitanti di Gerusalemme alla prostituzione e sviò Giuda.
12 Allora gli giunse uno scritto da parte del profeta Elia, che diceva: «Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO di Davide tuo padre: "Poiché non hai seguito le vie di Giosafat, tuo padre, e le vie di Asa, re di Giuda.
13 ma hai seguito le vie dei re d'Israele e hai spinto alla prostituzione Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, come ha fatto la casa di Achab, e hai ucciso i tuoi fratelli, la famiglia stessa di tuo padre, che erano migliori di te,
14 ecco, l'Eterno colpirà con una grande calamità il tuo popolo, i tuoi figli, le tue mogli e tutto ciò che ti appartiene;
15 tu stesso sarai colpito da gravi malattie, una malattia intestinale tale, che per questa malattia le tue viscere usciranno un po' per giorno"».
16 Inoltre l'Eterno risvegliò contro Jehoram lo spirito dei Filistei e degli Arabi, che abitano a fianco degli Etiopi;
17 ed essi salirono contro Giuda, l'invasero e portarono via tutte le ricchezze che si trovavano nel palazzo reale compresi i suoi figli e le sue mogli; cosí non gli rimase piú alcun figlio se non Jehoahaz, il piú piccolo dei suoi figli.
18 Dopo tutto questo l'Eterno lo colpí agli intestini con una malattia incurabile.
19 Cosí, con l'andar del tempo, al termine del secondo anno, per la malattia le viscere gli uscirono fuori e morí in mezzo ad atroci sofferenze. Il suo popolo non bruciò profumi in suo onore, come aveva fatto per i suoi padri.
20 Egli aveva trentadue anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò otto anni in Gerusalemme. Se ne andò senza lasciare rimpianti; lo seppellirono nella città di Davide, ma non nei sepolcri dei re.

2 And he had brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah: all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.
3 And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the firstborn.
4 Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and slew all his brethren with the sword, and divers also of the princes of Israel.
5 Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.
7 Howbeit the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
8 In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
9 Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his chariots with him: and he rose up by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and the captains of the chariots.
10 So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers.
11 Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto.
12 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,
13 But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father's house, which were better than thyself:
14 Behold, with a great plague will the Lord smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:
15 And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.
16 Moreover the Lord stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians:
17 And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
18 And after all this the Lord smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease.
19 And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
20 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.

Then Jehoram his son reigned in his place. 2 He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. 3 Their father gave them great gifts of silver and gold and precious things, with fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn.
4 Now when Jehoram [b]was established over the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself and killed all his brothers with the sword, and also others of the princes of Israel.
5 (C)Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for he had the daughter of (D)Ahab as a wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord. 7 Yet the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the (E)covenant that He had made with David, and since He had promised to give a lamp to him and to his (F)sons forever.
8 (G)In his days Edom revolted against Judah’s authority, and made a king over themselves. 9 So Jehoram went out with his officers, and all his chariots with him. And he rose by night and attacked the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots. 10 Thus Edom has been in revolt against Judah’s authority to this day. At that time Libnah revolted against his rule, because he had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers. 11 Moreover he made [c]high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to (H)commit harlotry, and led Judah astray.
12 And a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying,
Thus says the Lord God of your father David:
Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, or in the ways of Asa king of Judah, 13 but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have (I)made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to (J)play the harlot like the (K)harlotry of the house of Ahab, and also have (L)killed your brothers, those of your father’s household, who were better than yourself, 14 behold, the Lord will strike your people with a serious affliction—your children, your wives, and all your possessions; 15 and you will become very sick with a (M)disease of your intestines, until your intestines come out by reason of the sickness, day by day.
16 Moreover the (N)Lord (O)stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and the (P)Arabians who were near the Ethiopians. 17 And they came up into Judah and invaded it, and carried away all the possessions that were found in the king’s house, and also (Q)his sons and his wives, so that there was not a son left to him except [d]Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
18 After all this the Lord struck him (R)in his intestines with an incurable disease. 19 Then it happened in the course of time, after the end of two years, that his intestines came out because of his sickness; so he died in severe pain. And his people made no [e]burning for him, like (S)the burning for his fathers.
20 He was thirty-two years old when he became king. He reigned in Jerusalem eight years and, to no one’s sorrow, departed. However they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

21 Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Jehoram(A) his son succeeded him as king. 2 Jehoram’s brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.[a] 3 Their father had given them many gifts(B) of silver and gold and articles of value, as well as fortified cities(C) in Judah, but he had given the kingdom to Jehoram because he was his firstborn son.
Jehoram King of Judah(D)
4 When Jehoram established(E) himself firmly over his father’s kingdom, he put all his brothers(F) to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel. 5 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 6 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel,(G) as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab.(H) He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 7 Nevertheless, because of the covenant the Lord had made with David,(I) the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David.(J) He had promised to maintain a lamp(K) for him and his descendants forever.
8 In the time of Jehoram, Edom(L) rebelled against Judah and set up its own king. 9 So Jehoram went there with his officers and all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night. 10 To this day Edom has been in rebellion against Judah.
Libnah(M) revolted at the same time, because Jehoram had forsaken the Lord, the God of his ancestors. 11 He had also built high places on the hills of Judah and had caused the people of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves and had led Judah astray.
12 Jehoram received a letter from Elijah(N) the prophet, which said:
“This is what the Lord, the God of your father(O) David, says: ‘You have not followed the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or of Asa(P) king of Judah. 13 But you have followed the ways of the kings of Israel, and you have led Judah and the people of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves, just as the house of Ahab did.(Q) You have also murdered your own brothers, members of your own family, men who were better(R) than you. 14 So now the Lord is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives and everything that is yours, with a heavy blow. 15 You yourself will be very ill with a lingering disease(S) of the bowels, until the disease causes your bowels to come out.’”
16 The Lord aroused against Jehoram the hostility of the Philistines and of the Arabs(T) who lived near the Cushites. 17 They attacked Judah, invaded it and carried off all the goods found in the king’s palace, together with his sons and wives. Not a son was left to him except Ahaziah,[b] the youngest.(U)
18 After all this, the Lord afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the bowels. 19 In the course of time, at the end of the second year, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great pain. His people made no funeral fire in his honor,(V) as they had for his predecessors.
20 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He passed away, to no one’s regret, and was buried(W) in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
