3. ASA E LE SUE RIFORME CULTUALI
La pace di Asa
14 Asa fece ciò che è bene e giusto agli occhi del Signore suo Dio. 2 Allontanò gli altari stranieri e le alture; spezzò le stele ed eliminò i pali sacri. 3 Egli ordinò a Giuda di ricercare il Signore, Dio dei loro padri, e di eseguirne la legge e i comandi. 4 Da tutte le città di Giuda allontanò le alture e gli altari per l'incenso. Il regno fu tranquillo sotto di lui. 5 Ricostruì le fortezze in Giuda, poiché il paese era tranquillo e in quegli anni non si trovava in guerra; il Signore gli aveva concesso pace.
6 Egli disse a Giuda: «Ricostruiamo quelle città circondandole di mura e di torri con porte e sbarre, mentre il paese è ancora in nostro potere perché abbiamo ricercato il Signore nostro Dio; noi l'abbiamo ricercato ed egli ci ha concesso la pace alle frontiere». Ricostruirono e prosperarono.
7 Asa aveva un esercito di trecentomila uomini di Giuda con grandi scudi e lance e di duecentottantamila Beniaminiti con piccoli scudi e archi. Tutti costoro erano uomini valorosi.
L'invasione di Zerach
8 Contro di loro marciò Zerach l'Etiope con un esercito di un milione di uomini e con trecento carri; egli giunse fino a Maresa. 9 Asa gli andò incontro; si schierarono a battaglia nella valle di Sefata presso Maresa. 10 Asa domandò al Signore, suo Dio: «Signore, fuori di te, nessuno può soccorrere nella lotta fra il potente e chi è senza forza; soccorrici, Signore nostro Dio, perché noi confidiamo in te e nel tuo nome marciamo contro questa moltitudine; Signore, tu sei nostro Dio; un uomo non prevalga su di te!».
11 Il Signore sconfisse gli Etiopi di fronte ad Asa e di fronte a Giuda. Gli Etiopi si diedero alla fuga. 12 Asa e quanti erano con lui li inseguirono fino a Gherar. Degli Etiopi ne caddero tanti da non restarne uno vivo, perché fatti a pezzi di fronte al Signore e al suo esercito. Quelli riportarono molto bottino. 13 Conquistarono anche tutte le città intorno a Gherar, poiché lo spavento del Signore si era diffuso in esse; saccheggiarono tutte le città, nelle quali c'era grande bottino. 14 Si abbatterono anche sulle tende dei pastori, facendo razzie di pecore e di cammelli in grande quantità, quindi tornarono a Gerusalemme.

14 (A)Asa fece ciò che è buono e retto agli occhi del Signore, suo Dio. 2 Tolse via gli altari degli dèi stranieri, e gli alti luoghi; spezzò le statue, abbatté gli idoli di *Astarte. 3 Ordinò a *Giuda di cercare il Signore, Dio dei suoi padri, e di mettere in pratica la sua legge e i suoi comandamenti. 4 Tolse anche via da tutte le città di Giuda gli alti luoghi e le colonne solari; e, sotto di lui, il regno ebbe pace.
5 Egli costruí delle città fortificate in Giuda, perché il paese era tranquillo, e in quegli anni non c'era nessuna guerra contro di lui, perché il Signore gli aveva dato riposo. 6 Egli diceva agli abitanti di Giuda: «Costruiamo queste città, e circondiamole di mura, di torri, di porte e di sbarre; il paese è ancora a nostra disposizione, perché abbiamo cercato il Signore, il nostro Dio; noi l'abbiamo cercato, ed egli ci ha dato pace lungo i nostri confini». Essi dunque si misero a costruire, e prosperarono.
7 Asa aveva un esercito di trecentomila uomini di Giuda che portavano scudo e lancia, e di duecentottantamila di *Beniamino che portavano scudo e tiravano d'arco, tutti uomini forti e valorosi.
8 (B)Zera, l'Etiope, marciò contro di loro con un esercito di un milione d'uomini e trecento carri, e avanzò fino a Maresa. 9 Asa uscí contro di lui, e si schierarono a battaglia nella valle di Sefata presso Maresa. 10 Allora Asa invocò il suo Dio, e disse: «Signore, per te non c'è differenza tra il dare soccorso a chi è in gran numero, e il darlo a chi è senza forza; soccorrici, Signore nostro Dio! Poiché su di te noi ci appoggiamo, e nel tuo nome siamo venuti contro questa moltitudine. Tu sei il Signore nostro Dio; non vinca l'uomo contro di te!» 11 E il Signore sconfisse gli Etiopi davanti ad Asa e davanti a Giuda, e gli Etiopi si diedero alla fuga. 12 Asa e la gente che era con lui li inseguirono fino a Gherar; e degli Etiopi ne caddero tanti, che non ne rimase piú uno vivo; perché furono fatti a pezzi davanti al Signore e davanti al suo esercito. Poi Asa e i suoi portarono via un immenso bottino. 13 E piombarono su tutte le città nei dintorni di Gherar, perché lo spavento del Signore si era impadronito d'esse; e quelli saccheggiarono tutte le città; perché v'era molto bottino; 14 fecero pure man bassa sui chiusi delle mandrie, e condussero via gran numero di pecore e di cammelli. Poi tornarono a *Gerusalemme.

14 Abías murió y fue sepultado en la Ciudad de David; su hijo Asá lo sucedió en el trono. Durante su reinado, el país disfrutó de diez años de paz.
Asá, rey de Judá(A)
2 Asá hizo lo que era bueno y agradable ante el Señor su Dios. 3 Se deshizo de los altares de dioses extranjeros y de los altares paganos en las colinas, destrozó las piedras sagradas y derribó las imágenes de la diosa Aserá. 4 Además, ordenó a los habitantes de Judá que adoraran al Señor, Dios de sus antepasados, y que obedecieran sus leyes y sus mandamientos. 5 De este modo, Asá se deshizo de los altares paganos y de los altares de incienso que había en todas las ciudades de Judá y durante su reinado hubo tranquilidad. 6 Asá construyó en Judá ciudades fortificadas, pues durante esos años el Señor le dio descanso; el país disfrutó de paz y no estuvo en guerra con nadie.
7 Asá dijo a los de Judá: «Reconstruyamos esas ciudades y levantemos a su alrededor murallas con torres, puertas y cerrojos. El país todavía es nuestro, porque hemos buscado al Señor nuestro Dios; como lo hemos buscado, él nos ha concedido estar en paz con nuestros vecinos». Y tuvieron mucho éxito en la reconstrucción de las ciudades.
8 Asá contaba con un ejército de trescientos mil soldados de Judá, los cuales portaban lanzas y escudos grandes; además, con doscientos ochenta mil benjamitas que portaban arcos y escudos pequeños. Todos ellos eran guerreros valientes.
9 Zera el cusita marchó contra ellos al frente de un ejército de un millón de soldados y trescientos carros de guerra y llegó hasta Maresá. 10 Asá le salió al encuentro en el valle de Sefata y tomó posiciones cerca de Maresá.
11 Allí Asá invocó al Señor su Dios y dijo: «Señor, solo tú puedes ayudar al débil contra el poderoso. ¡Ayúdanos, Señor y Dios nuestro, porque en ti confiamos y en tu nombre hemos venido contra esta multitud! ¡Tú, Señor, eres nuestro Dios! ¡No permitas que ningún mortal se alce contra ti!».
12 El Señor derrotó a los cusitas cuando estos lucharon contra Asá y Judá. Los cusitas huyeron, 13 pero Asá y su ejército los persiguieron hasta Guerar. Allí cayeron los cusitas y ni uno de ellos quedó con vida, porque el Señor y su ejército los aniquilaron. Los de Judá se llevaron un enorme botín. 14 Luego, atacaron todas las ciudades que había alrededor de Guerar, las cuales estaban llenas de pánico ante el Señor, y las saquearon, pues había en ellas un gran botín. 15 Además, atacaron los campamentos, donde había mucho ganado, y se llevaron una gran cantidad de ovejas y camellos. Después de eso, regresaron a Jerusalén.

14 ¶ So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land had rest ten years.
2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God,
3 for he took away the altars of the strange gods and the high places and broke down the images and cut down the groves
4 and commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and they fulfilled the law and the commandments.
5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images, and the kingdom had rest before him.
6 And he built fenced cities in Judah, for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years because the LORD had given him rest.
7 Therefore, he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities and make about them walls and towers, gates, and bars, now that the land is ours; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side. So they built and were prospered.
8 And Asa had an army of men that bore shields and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew bows, two hundred and eighty thousand; all these were mighty men of valour.
9 ¶ And there came out against them Zerah, the Ethiopian, with a host of a thousand thousand and three hundred chariots and came unto Mareshah.
10 Then Asa went out against him, and they ordered the battle in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many or with those that have no power; help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; do not let man prevail against thee.
12 So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.
13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar, and the Ethiopians were overthrown until there were none left alive, for they were destroyed before the LORD and before his host, and they carried away very much spoil.
14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar, for the fear of the LORD came upon them; and they spoiled all the cities, for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
15 They smote also the booths of livestock and carried away sheep and camels in abundance and returned to Jerusalem.

14 [a]And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. Asa his son succeeded him as king, and in his days the country was at peace for ten years.
Asa King of Judah(A)
2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.(B) 3 He removed the foreign altars(C) and the high places, smashed the sacred stones(D) and cut down the Asherah poles.[b](E) 4 He commanded Judah to seek the Lord,(F) the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. 5 He removed the high places(G) and incense altars(H) in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 6 He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the Lord gave him rest.(I)
7 “Let us build up these towns,” he said to Judah, “and put walls around them, with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the Lord our God; we sought him and he has given us rest(J) on every side.” So they built and prospered.
8 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand(K) men from Judah, equipped with large shields and with spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, armed with small shields and with bows. All these were brave fighting men.
9 Zerah the Cushite(L) marched out against them with an army of thousands upon thousands and three hundred chariots, and came as far as Mareshah.(M) 10 Asa went out to meet him, and they took up battle positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.
11 Then Asa called(N) to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us,(O) Lord our God, for we rely(P) on you, and in your name(Q) we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail(R) against you.”
12 The Lord struck down(S) the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled, 13 and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar.(T) Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed(U) before the Lord and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder.(V) 14 They destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for the terror(W) of the Lord had fallen on them. They looted all these villages, since there was much plunder there. 15 They also attacked the camps of the herders and carried off droves of sheep and goats and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
