7 Poiché abbiamo queste promesse, carissimi, purifichiamoci da ogni contaminazione di carne e di spirito, compiendo la nostra santificazione nel timore di Dio.
La tristezza secondo Dio
2 (A)Fateci posto nei vostri cuori[a]! Noi non abbiamo fatto torto a nessuno, non abbiamo rovinato nessuno, non abbiamo sfruttato nessuno. 3 Non lo dico per condannarvi, perché ho già detto prima che voi siete nei nostri cuori per la morte e per la vita[b]. 4 Grande è la franchezza che uso con voi e molto ho da vantarmi di voi; sono pieno di consolazione, sovrabbondo di gioia in ogni nostra tribolazione. 5 Da quando siamo giunti in Macedonia, infatti, la nostra carne non ha avuto nessun sollievo, anzi, siamo stati tribolati in ogni maniera; combattimenti di fuori, timori di dentro. 6 Ma Dio, che consola gli afflitti, ci consolò con l’arrivo di Tito[c]; 7 e non soltanto con il suo arrivo, ma anche con la consolazione da lui ricevuta in mezzo a voi. Egli ci ha raccontato il vostro vivo desiderio di vedermi, il vostro pianto, la vostra premura per me; così mi sono più che mai rallegrato.
8 Anche se vi ho rattristati con la mia lettera, non me ne rincresce; e se pure ne ho provato rincrescimento (poiché vedo che quella lettera, quantunque per breve tempo, vi ha rattristati), 9 ora mi rallegro, non perché siete stati rattristati, ma perché questa tristezza vi ha portati al ravvedimento; poiché siete stati rattristati secondo Dio, in modo che non aveste a ricevere alcun danno da noi. 10 Perché la tristezza secondo Dio produce un ravvedimento che porta alla salvezza, del quale non c’è mai da pentirsi; ma la tristezza del mondo produce la morte. 11 Infatti, ecco quanta premura ha prodotto in voi questa vostra tristezza secondo Dio, anzi, quante scuse, quanto sdegno, quanto timore, quanto desiderio, quanto zelo, quale punizione! In ogni maniera avete dimostrato di essere puri in questo affare.
12 Se dunque vi ho scritto, non fu a motivo dell’offensore né dell’offeso, ma perché la premura che avete per noi si manifestasse in mezzo a voi davanti a Dio. 13 Perciò siamo stati consolati; e oltre a questa nostra consolazione ci siamo più che mai rallegrati per la gioia di Tito, perché il suo spirito è stato rinfrancato da voi tutti. 14 Anche se mi ero un po’ vantato di voi con lui, non ne sono stato deluso; ma come tutto ciò che vi abbiamo detto era verità, così anche il nostro vanto con Tito è risultato verità. 15 Ed egli vi ama più che mai intensamente, perché ricorda l’ubbidienza di voi tutti e come lo avete accolto con timore e tremore. 16 Mi rallegro perché in ogni cosa posso avere fiducia in voi.

7 Avendo dunque queste promesse, carissimi, purifichiamoci da ogni contaminazione di carne e di spirito. compiendo la nostra santificazione nel timore di Dio.
2 Accoglieteci; noi non abbiamo fatto torto ad alcuno, non abbiamo corrotto alcuno, non abbiamo frodato alcuno.
3 Io non lo dico a vostra condanna, perché vi ho già detto prima che voi siete nei nostri cuori, per morire insieme e vivere insieme.
4 Io uso una grande franchezza con voi e ho molto di che gloriarmi di voi; sono ripieno di consolazione e sovrabbondo di gioia in mezzo a tutta la nostra afflizione.
5 Da quando infatti siamo arrivati in Macedonia, la nostra carne non ha avuto requie alcuna, ma siamo stati afflitti in ogni maniera: combattimenti di fuori, paure di dentro.
6 Ma Dio, che consola gli afflitti, ci ha consolati con la venuta di Tito,
7 e non solo con la sua venuta, ma anche con la consolazione da lui ricevuta tra di voi; egli ci ha riferito della vostra grande affezione, del vostro pianto e del vostro zelo per me, per cui mi sono ancor piú rallegrato,
8 perché, anche se vi ho contristato con quell'epistola, ora non me ne dispiace anche se mi è dispiaciuto, poiché vedo che quell'epistola, quantunque per breve tempo, vi ha rattristati.
9 Ora mi rallegro, non perché siete stati rattristati, ma perché siete stati rattristati a ravvedimento, poiché siete stati rattristati secondo Dio, affinché in nessuna cosa aveste a ricevere alcun danno da parte nostra.
10 La tristezza secondo Dio infatti produce ravvedimento a salvezza, che non ha rimpianto; ma la tristezza del mondo produce la morte.
11 Infatti, ecco quanta premura ha prodotto in voi l'essere stati rattristati secondo Dio, anzi quale scuse, quale sdegno, quale timore, quale grande affezione quale zelo, quale soddisfazione! In ogni maniera voi avete dimostrato che siete puri in quest'affare.
12 Anche se vi ho scritto, non l'ho fatto né per colui che ha fatto l'offesa né per colui che l'ha ricevuta, ma affinché la nostra premura per voi fosse manifestata in mezzo a voi davanti a Dio.
13 Perciò noi siamo stati consolati a motivo della vostra consolazione e ci siamo tanto piú rallegrati per la gioia di Tito, perché il suo spirito è stato ricreato da voi tutti.
14 Per questo se in qualche cosa mi sono gloriato di voi con lui, non sono stato confuso ma, come vi abbiamo detto tutte le cose in verità, cosí anche ciò di cui ci eravamo gloriati con Tito è risultato verità.
15 Ed egli ha un grande affetto per voi, ricordandosi dell'ubbidienza di voi tutti e del come l'avete ricevuto con timore e tremore.
16 Io mi rallegro dunque che in ogni cosa mi posso confidare in voi.

7 [L Therefore] ·Dear friends [Beloved], we have these promises from God, so we should make ourselves pure—free from ·anything that makes body or soul unclean [L every defilement of flesh and spirit]. ·We should try to become holy in the way we live [or …and in this way bring our holiness to completion/perfection], ·because we respect [out of reverence for; in the fear of] God.
Paul’s Joy
2 ·Open your hearts to [L Make room for] us. We have not done wrong to anyone, we have not ·ruined the faith of [L ruined; corrupted] anyone, and we have not ·cheated [exploited] anyone. 3 I do not say this to ·blame [condemn] you. [L For] I told you before that ·we love you so much [L you are in our hearts so that] we would live or die with you. 4 I ·feel very sure of you [am very confident in you; or have spoken very boldy/frankly to you] and am very proud of you. You give me much ·comfort [encouragement], and in all of our ·troubles [trials; tribulation] I ·have great [overflow with] joy.
5 [L For] When we came into Macedonia [1:16], ·we [our body/flesh] had no rest [C Here Paul picks up his account where he left off at 2:13]. We found ·trouble [trial; tribulation] all around us. We had ·fighting [battles; conflicts] on the outside and fear on the inside. 6 But God, who ·comforts [encourages] those who are ·troubled [downcast; discouraged], ·comforted [encouraged] us when Titus [2:13] came. 7 We were ·comforted [encouraged], not only by his ·coming [arrival; presence] but also by the comfort you gave him. Titus told us about your ·wish to see me [L longing] and ·that you are very sorry for what you did [L your sorrow/mourning; C regret for their treatment of Paul during his previous visit; 1:23; 2:1]. He also told me about your great ·care [or loyalty; L zeal] for me, and when I heard this, I ·was much happier [rejoiced even more].
8 [L For] Even if my letter [C Paul’s “severe” letter that he wrote after his painful visit; see 2:3–4, 9] made you ·sad [grieve], I am not sorry I wrote it. At first I was sorry, because it made you ·sad [grieve], but you ·were sad [grieved] only for a short time. 9 Now I ·am happy [rejoice], not because you were ·made sad [grieved], but because your sorrow ·made you change your lives [led to repentance]. You ·became sad [grieved] in the way God wanted you to, so you were not ·hurt by [or punished because of] us in any way [C the Corinthians’ repentance prevented further sorrow as well as discipline from God]. 10 [L For] The kind of sorrow God wants makes people ·change their hearts and lives [repent], leading to salvation, and ·you cannot be sorry for that [or there can be no regret for that kind of sorrow; L without regret]. But the kind of sorrow the world has ·brings [leads to; results in] death. 11 [L For] See what this sorrow—the sorrow God wanted you to have—has ·done to [led to/produced in] you: It has made you very ·serious [eager; earnest; zealous]. It made you want to ·restore [vindicate; defend] yourselves. It made you ·angry [indignant] and afraid. It made you ·want to see me [long for reconciliation]. It made you ·care [zealous]. It made you want to ·do the right thing [see justice done]. In every way you have ·regained your innocence [or proved yourselves innocent]. 12 I wrote that letter, not because of the one who did the wrong or because of the person who was ·hurt [wronged]. I wrote the letter so you could see, before God, the great ·care [eagerness; zeal] you have for us. 13 That is why we were ·comforted [encouraged].
Not only were we very ·comforted [encouraged], we ·were even happier [rejoiced even more] to see that Titus [2:13] was so ·happy [joyful], because all of you ·made him feel much better [L refreshed his spirit]. 14 [L For] I ·bragged [boasted] to Titus about you, and ·you showed that I was right [L I was not put to shame]. Everything we said to you was true, and you have proved that what we ·bragged [boasted] about to Titus is true. 15 And his ·love [affection; feeling] for you is ·stronger [greater still] when he remembers that you were all ready to obey. You ·welcomed [received] him with ·respect and fear [L fear and trembling]. 16 I ·am very happy [rejoice] that I can ·trust you fully [have complete confidence in you].
