1 Pablo, apóstol de Cristo Jesús por la voluntad de Dios, y Timoteo nuestro hermano,
a la iglesia de Dios que está en Corinto y a todos los creyentes en toda la región de Acaya:
2 Que Dios nuestro Padre y el Señor Jesucristo les concedan gracia y paz.
El Dios de toda consolación
3 Bendito sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Padre misericordioso y Dios de toda consolación, 4 quien nos consuela en todas nuestras tribulaciones para que, con el mismo consuelo que de Dios hemos recibido, también nosotros podamos consolar a todos los que sufren. 5 Pues, así como participamos abundantemente en los sufrimientos de Cristo, así también por medio de él tenemos abundante consuelo. 6 Si sufrimos, es para que ustedes tengan consuelo y salvación; y si somos consolados, es para que ustedes tengan el consuelo que los ayude a soportar con paciencia los mismos sufrimientos que nosotros padecemos. 7 Firme es la esperanza que tenemos en cuanto a ustedes, porque sabemos que, así como participan de nuestros sufrimientos, así también participan de nuestro consuelo.
8 Hermanos, no queremos que desconozcan las aflicciones que sufrimos en la provincia de Asia. Estábamos tan agobiados bajo tanta presión que hasta perdimos la esperanza de salir con vida: 9 nos sentíamos como sentenciados a muerte. Pero eso sucedió para que no confiáramos en nosotros mismos, sino en Dios, que resucita a los muertos. 10 Él nos libró y nos librará de tal peligro de muerte. En él tenemos puesta nuestra esperanza y él seguirá librándonos. 11 Mientras tanto, ustedes nos ayudan orando por nosotros. Así muchos darán gracias a Dios por nosotros[a] a causa del don que se nos ha concedido en respuesta a tantas oraciones.
Pablo cambia de planes
12 Para nosotros, el motivo de satisfacción es el testimonio de nuestra conciencia: Nos hemos comportado en el mundo, y especialmente entre ustedes, con la santidad y sinceridad que vienen de Dios. Nuestra conducta no se ha ajustado a la sabiduría humana, sino a la gracia de Dios. 13 No estamos escribiéndoles nada que no puedan leer ni entender. Espero que lleguen a comprender todo, 14 así como ya nos han comprendido en parte, que pueden sentirse orgullosos de nosotros como también nosotros nos sentiremos orgullosos de ustedes en el día del Señor Jesús.
15 Confiando en esto, quise visitarlos primero a ustedes para que recibieran una doble bendición; 16 es decir, visitarlos de paso a Macedonia y verlos otra vez a mi regreso de allá. Así podrían ayudarme a seguir el viaje a Judea. 17 Al proponerme esto, ¿acaso lo hice a la ligera? ¿O es que hago mis planes según criterios meramente humanos, de manera que diga «sí, sí» y «no, no» al mismo tiempo?
18 Pero tan cierto como que Dios es fiel, el mensaje que les hemos dirigido no es «sí» y «no». 19 Porque el Hijo de Dios, Jesucristo, a quien Silvano, Timoteo y yo predicamos entre ustedes, no fue «sí» y «no»; en él siempre ha sido «sí». 20 Todas las promesas que ha hecho Dios son «sí» en Cristo. Así que por medio de Cristo respondemos «amén» para la gloria de Dios. 21 Dios es el que nos mantiene firmes en Cristo, tanto a nosotros como a ustedes. Él nos ungió, 22 nos selló como propiedad suya y puso su Espíritu en nuestro corazón como garantía de sus promesas.
23 ¡Por mi vida! Invoco a Dios como testigo de que todavía no he ido a Corinto solo por consideración a ustedes. 24 No es que intentemos imponerles la fe, sino que deseamos contribuir a la alegría de ustedes, pues por la fe se mantienen firmes.

Paul says ‘Hello’
1 This letter is from me, Paul. God chose me to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Our Christian friend Timothy is here with me as I write.
I am sending this letter to you, the people of the church in Corinth city. I am sending it also to all of God's people who live in other places in Achaia.
2 I pray that God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ will continue to help you. I pray that they will give you peace in your minds.
God himself comforts us
3 We thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, because he is so good to us. As our Father, he is very kind to us. He is our God who comforts us in every way. 4 Whenever we have trouble, he comforts us. Because of that, we ourselves can comfort other people. When they have any kind of trouble, we can comfort them, in the same way that God has comforted us. 5 Christ himself received much pain, and God comforted him. As Christ's servants, we also receive the same kind of pain. But, God also comforts us very much, because we belong to Christ.
6 So, when we receive trouble, the result is that we can comfort you. And then also, God saves you. When God comforts us, that helps us to comfort you too. As a result, when you receive the same kinds of trouble that we receive, you learn to be patient and strong. 7 So we continue to be sure that you will remain strong. You receive many troubles, as we do too. But we know that God will also comfort you, as he comforts us.
8 Our Christian friends, we want you to know about the trouble that we had in Asia. Those troubles were very painful. We ourselves were not strong enough to continue. We even thought that we would die. 9 We ourselves thought that we would certainly die. We knew that we could not trust our own strength. We had to trust God. He is the one who causes dead people to rise up to new life. So we could trust him to make us strong. 10 We nearly died, but God saved us from that great danger. We know that we can continue to trust him. He will save us from any future danger. 11 We also know that you continue to help us as you pray for us. As many people pray for us, they will thank God when he answers their prayers. They will see that God is very kind to us, and they will thank him.
Paul explains why he did not visit Corinth earlier
12 We can be proud of how we have lived in this world. We have been careful to be honest and good with everyone. And we have been like that with you even more. We are sure in our own minds that this is true. We have not tried to be clever in a human way. But we have lived in the way that God has helped us to live. 13 We are writing to you only about things that you yourselves can read and understand. And I hope that you will understand completely one day. 14 You do not understand us completely yet. But I hope that you will understand completely on the day when our Lord Jesus returns. Then you can be proud of us in the same way that we will be proud of you.
15-16 So, because I was sure that you trusted me, I wanted to visit you twice. Then I could bring God's help to you twice. I decided to visit you first on my way to Macedonia.[a] Then I would visit you again on my way back from Macedonia. After that, you could help to send me on my journey to Judea.[b] 17 I did not decide this in a careless way. I really wanted to do it. I do not decide to do things only to please myself, like someone who does not know God. I do not say ‘Yes,’ and then I immediately say ‘No’.
18 God always does what he says he will do. In the same way, my promise to you was not both ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. 19 Silas, Timothy and I told you the message about God's Son, Jesus Christ. Christ is not someone who changes his message between ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. Instead, he always says ‘Yes,’ and he does what he says. 20 Christ says ‘Yes’ to all of God's promises, so that they become true. So when we pray, we say ‘Yes, amen!,’ because we know that Christ has done it. And when we do that, we are saying that God is great.
21 It is God that causes us to continue to trust Christ. He does that for us and for you, because we belong to Christ. God has chosen us to serve him. 22 He has also put his mark on us, to show that we belong to him. He has given his Spirit to us, to live in us. Because of that, we know that we will receive all the good things that God has promised.
23 God will show that what I say is true! He knows my thoughts. Why did I decide not to come back to Corinth at this time? I did not come because I did not want to be angry with you. 24 We are not trying to tell you what you must believe, like masters would do. You are already strong in your spirits because you trust God. So we want to help you to be really happy.

1 Paul, an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) and Timothy(C) our brother,
To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) together with all his holy people throughout Achaia:(F)
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(G)
Praise to the God of All Comfort
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(H) the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us(I) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,(J) so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;(K) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,(L) so also you share in our comfort.
8 We do not want you to be uninformed,(M) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(N) in the province of Asia.(O) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(P) who raises the dead.(Q) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(R) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(S) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(T) Then many will give thanks(U) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Paul’s Change of Plans
12 Now this is our boast: Our conscience(V) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity[b](W) and godly sincerity.(X) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom(Y) but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.(Z)
15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(AA) first so that you might benefit twice.(AB) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(AC) to Macedonia(AD) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(AE) to Judea.(AF) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(AG) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?
18 But as surely as God is faithful,(AH) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(AI) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[c](AJ) and Timothy(AK)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(AL) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(AM) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(AN) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(AO) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(AP) in Christ. He anointed(AQ) us, 22 set his seal(AR) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(AS)
23 I call God as my witness(AT)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(AU) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(AV) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(AW)
