1 Cordial saludo a la iglesia de Dios que está en Corinto y a todo el pueblo santo de la provincia de Acaya, de parte de Pablo, apóstol de Jesucristo por voluntad de Dios, y de Timoteo, nuestro hermano.
2 Que la paz y las bendiciones de Dios nuestro Padre y del Señor Jesucristo estén con ustedes.
Pablo agradece a Dios
3 Bendito sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Padre misericordioso y Dios que siempre nos da consuelo. 4 Dios nos consuela en todos nuestros sufrimientos para que también nosotros podamos consolar a quienes sufren, dándoles el mismo consuelo que recibimos de él. 5 Así como compartimos los enormes sufrimientos de Cristo, podemos compartir con otros el consuelo que él nos da. 6 Si sufrimos, es para el consuelo y la salvación de todos ustedes. Igualmente, si tenemos consuelo es para consolarlos y darles fortaleza para enfrentar con paciencia los mismos sufrimientos que tenemos nosotros. 7 Confiamos totalmente en ustedes porque sabemos que así como comparten nuestro sufrimiento, también comparten nuestro consuelo.
8 Hermanos, queremos que sepan acerca de los problemas que afrontamos en Asia. Tuvimos que soportar una carga demasiado pesada para nosotros y estábamos tan desesperados que incluso perdimos la esperanza de seguir viviendo. 9 En el fondo de nuestro corazón sentíamos que se nos había dado sentencia de muerte; sin embargo, esto sucedió para que aprendiéramos a dejar de confiar en nosotros mismos y confiáramos en Dios, quien es capaz de resucitar a los muertos. 10 Él nos rescató del gran peligro de la muerte y nos seguirá rescatando. Pusimos nuestra esperanza en Dios y él nos rescatará de nuevo 11 si ustedes nos ayudan con sus oraciones. Si muchos oran por nosotros, también habrá muchos que den gracias a Dios por el beneficio que recibimos de él.
Cambio en los planes de Pablo
12 Estamos orgullosos de esto y lo podemos decir con la conciencia limpia que nos hemos comportado con todo el mundo, y especialmente con ustedes, con toda la sinceridad que viene de Dios. No nos guiamos por la sabiduría humana, sino por el generoso amor de Dios. 13 No hay nada escrito entre líneas en nuestras cartas. Lo que quiero decir no está oculto. Así que espero que lleguen a comprendernos del todo, 14 como hasta cierto punto nos han entendido. Así estarán orgullosos de nosotros, al igual que nosotros lo estaremos de ustedes el día en que regrese nuestro Señor Jesús.
15 Como estaba confiado en esto, decidí venir a visitarlos primero para que pudieran recibir la bendición de dos visitas mías. 16 Mi plan era pasar a visitarlos cuando fuera camino a Macedonia y visitarlos de nuevo en mi viaje de regreso. Pensaba que ustedes podrían ayudarme con mi viaje a Judea. 17 Espero que no piensen que hice estos planes a la ligera, o que me gusta ser como la gente de este mundo que en un momento dice «sí» y al instante dice «no».
18 Así como Dios es digno de confianza, pueden también confiar en que lo que les decimos nosotros nunca es «sí» y «no» al mismo tiempo. 19 Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, de quien les hemos hablado Silas, Timoteo y yo, no era «sí» y «no» a la vez. Por el contrario, Cristo siempre ha sido el «sí». 20 No importa cuántas promesas haya hecho Dios, Cristo siempre ha sido el «sí» de todas ellas. Por eso, por medio de Jesucristo, cuando alabamos a Dios decimos: «Así sea». 21 Dios nos da la garantía de que ustedes y nosotros pertenecemos a Jesucristo y nos ha consagrado.[a] 22 Nos ha puesto una marca que muestra que le pertenecemos: el Espíritu en nuestros corazones como un adelanto que garantiza que nos dará todo lo que nos ha prometido.
23 Pongo a Dios por testigo de lo que digo: les doy mi palabra que la razón por la cual no he vuelto a Corinto es porque no he querido castigarlos ni causarles dolor. 24 Esto no quiere decir que tratemos de controlar su fe, porque estamos seguros de que su fe es muy fuerte. Lo que queremos es trabajar junto con ustedes para que sean felices.

Saludo
1 Pablo, apóstol de Cristo Jesús por la voluntad de Dios, saluda, junto con el hermano Timoteo, a la iglesia de Dios que está en la ciudad de Corinto y a los demás hermanos de toda la región de Acaya. 2 Que Dios nuestro Padre y el Señor Jesucristo derramen su gracia y su paz sobre ustedes.
Acción de gracias
3 Alabado sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, pues él es el Padre que nos tiene compasión y el Dios que siempre nos consuela. 4 Él nos consuela en todos nuestros sufrimientos, para que nosotros podamos consolar también a los que sufren, dándoles el mismo consuelo que él nos ha dado a nosotros. 5 Porque así como los sufrimientos de Cristo se desbordan sobre nosotros y nosotros sufrimos con él, así también por medio de Cristo se desborda nuestro consuelo. 6 Pues si nosotros sufrimos, es para que ustedes tengan consuelo y salvación; y si Dios nos consuela, también es para que ustedes tengan consuelo y puedan soportar con fortaleza los mismos sufrimientos que nosotros padecemos. 7 Tenemos una esperanza firme en cuanto a ustedes, porque nos consta que, así como tienen parte en los sufrimientos, también tienen parte en el consuelo.
8 Hermanos, queremos que sepan cuántas dificultades tuvimos en la provincia de Asia. Fue una prueba tan dura que ya no podíamos resistir más, y hasta perdimos la esperanza de salir con vida. 9 Nos sentíamos como condenados a muerte. Pero esto sirvió para enseñarnos a no confiar en nosotros mismos, sino en Dios, que resucita a los muertos. 10 Y Dios nos libró y nos librará de tan gran peligro de muerte. Confiamos en que seguirá librándonos, 11 si ustedes nos ayudan orando por nosotros. Si muchos oran por nosotros, muchos también darán gracias a Dios por las bendiciones que de él recibimos.
Por qué no viajó a Corinto
12 Tenemos un motivo de orgullo, y es que nuestra conciencia nos dice que nos hemos portado limpia y sinceramente en este mundo, y especialmente en mi relación con ustedes. Nosotros no nos guiamos por la sabiduría humana, sino que confiamos en la gracia de Dios. 13 En nuestras cartas, no escribimos nada distinto de lo que ustedes pueden leer y entender. Y espero que lleguen a entender perfectamente, 14 como ya en parte han entendido lo que somos, que cuando regrese nuestro Señor Jesús ustedes se sentirán orgullosos de nosotros, como también nosotros nos sentiremos orgullosos de ustedes.
15 Confiando en esto, yo había pensado en ir primero a verlos a ustedes, y así hacerles el favor de visitarlos dos veces; 16 pensaba visitarlos primero al pasar camino de Macedonia, y después, al regresar, visitarlos otra vez. Así ustedes podrían ayudarme luego a seguir mi viaje a Judea. 17 ¿Será que cuando decidí hacer esto no lo pensé seriamente? ¿Creen ustedes que yo hago mis planes con doblez, diciendo «sí» y «no» al mismo tiempo? 18 Dios es testigo de que nosotros no les decimos a ustedes «sí» y «no» al mismo tiempo. 19 Porque Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, a quien Silvano, Timoteo y yo predicamos entre ustedes, no fue «sí» y «no» al mismo tiempo. Dios ha dado en Cristo para siempre su «sí», 20 pues en él se cumplen todas las promesas de Dios. Por esto, cuando alabamos a Dios, decimos «Amén» por medio de Cristo Jesús. 21 Y Dios es el que a nosotros y a ustedes nos ha afirmado al unirnos a Cristo, y nos ha consagrado. 22 Nos ha marcado con su sello, y ha puesto en nuestro corazón el Espíritu Santo como garantía de lo que vamos a recibir.
23 Pero si todavía no he ido a Corinto, como pensaba, pongo a Dios por testigo y lo aseguro por mi propia vida, ha sido por consideración a ustedes. 24 Nosotros no somos los dueños de su fe; lo que queremos es colaborar con ustedes, para que tengan alegría, pues ustedes ya están firmes en la fe.

To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) together with all his holy people throughout Achaia:(F)
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(G)
Praise to the God of All Comfort
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(H) the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us(I) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,(J) so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;(K) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,(L) so also you share in our comfort.
8 We do not want you to be uninformed,(M) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(N) in the province of Asia.(O) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(P) who raises the dead.(Q) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(R) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(S) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(T) Then many will give thanks(U) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Paul’s Change of Plans
12 Now this is our boast: Our conscience(V) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity[b](W) and godly sincerity.(X) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom(Y) but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.(Z)
15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(AA) first so that you might benefit twice.(AB) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(AC) to Macedonia(AD) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(AE) to Judea.(AF) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(AG) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?
18 But as surely as God is faithful,(AH) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(AI) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[c](AJ) and Timothy(AK)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(AL) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(AM) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(AN) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(AO) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(AP) in Christ. He anointed(AQ) us, 22 set his seal(AR) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(AS)
23 I call God as my witness(AT)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(AU) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(AV) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(AW)

To the church of God in Corinth, and to all ·of God’s people [T the saints] everywhere in Achaia [C the Roman province where the city of Corinth was located, present day southern Greece]:
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul Gives Thanks to God
3 ·Praise be to [Blessed is/be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father who is full of ·mercy [compassion] and all ·comfort [encouragement]. 4 He ·comforts [encourages] us ·every time we have [L in all our] ·troubles [trials; tribulation], so when others have ·trouble [any trials/tribulation], we can ·comfort [encourage] them with the same ·comfort [encouragement] God gives us. 5 [L For just as] ·We share in the many sufferings of Christ [L Christ’s sufferings abound in us]. In the same way, ·much comfort comes to us [L our comfort abounds] through Christ. 6 If we have ·troubles [trials; tribulation], it is for your ·comfort [encouragement] and salvation, and if we ·have comfort [are encouraged], ·you also have comfort [or it is for your comfort/encouragement]. This helps you to accept patiently the same sufferings we have. 7 Our hope for you is ·strong [unshaken; firm], knowing that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the ·comfort [encouragement] we receive.
8 Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the ·trouble [trial; tribulation] we suffered in Asia [C a Roman province in present-day western Turkey]. We had great burdens there that were beyond our own strength, so that we even ·gave up hope of living [L despaired of life]. 9 Truly, in our own hearts we believed we ·would die [L had been sentenced to death]. But this happened so we would not trust in ourselves but in God, who raises people from the dead. 10 God ·saved [rescued; delivered] us from these great dangers of death, and he will continue to ·save [rescue; deliver] us. We have put our hope in him, and he will ·save [rescue; deliver] us again. 11 ·And you can [or …as you] help us with your prayers. Then many people will give thanks for us—·that God blessed [for the gift/favor given to] us because of their many prayers.
The Change in Paul’s Plans
12 This is ·what we are proud of [L our boast], ·and I can say it with a clear conscience [L the testimony/witness of our conscience]: In everything we have done in the world, and especially with you, we have had an ·honest[a] [or generous] and sincere heart from God. We did this by God’s grace, not by ·the kind of wisdom the world has [worldly/fleshly wisdom].
15 I was so sure of all this that I made plans to visit you first so you could ·be blessed twice [L have a second grace]. 16 I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia [C the northern part of present-day Greece; Acts 19:21; 20:1, 2] and again on my way back [C the visit anticipated in 1 Cor. 16:5]. I wanted to ·get help from you for my trip [L be sent by you] to Judea. 17 [L So; Therefore] Do you think that I made these plans ·without really meaning it [lightly; with vacillation]? Or maybe you think I make plans ·as the world does [or using only human standards/reason; L according to the flesh], so that I say yes, yes and at the same time no, no.
18 But ·since you can believe God [L God is trustworthy/faithful], you can believe that what we tell you is never both yes and no. 19 [L For] The Son of God, Jesus Christ, that Silas and Timothy and I preached to you, was not yes and no. [L But; Rather] In ·Christ [L him] it has always been yes. 20 The yes to all of God’s promises is in ·Christ [L him], and through Christ we say ·yes [L amen; C from a Hebrew term meaning “yes,” or “it is true”] to the glory of God. 21 Remember, God is the One who makes you and us ·strong [stand firm; established] in Christ. You ·are strong [stand firm; are well established] in faith. But we are workers with you for your own joy.
