7 Mes amis, puisque nous possédons ce qui nous a été promis en ces termes, purifions-nous de tout ce qui corrompt le corps et l’esprit, pour mener ainsi une vie pleinement sainte, dans la crainte de Dieu.
Paul et les Corinthiens réconciliés
2 Faites-nous une place dans votre cœur ! Nous n’avons causé de tort à personne, nous n’avons ruiné personne, nous n’avons exploité personne. 3 En parlant ainsi, je n’entends nullement vous condamner. Je vous l’ai déjà dit : nous vous portons dans notre cœur à la vie et à la mort. 4 Grande est mon assurance quand je parle de vous, grande est ma fierté à votre sujet. J’ai été pleinement réconforté, je déborde de joie dans toutes nos détresses.
5 En effet, à notre arrivée en Macédoine, nous n’avons pas eu un instant de repos, nous avons connu toutes sortes de détresses : conflits au-dehors, craintes au-dedans. 6 Mais Dieu, qui réconforte ceux qui sont abattus, nous a réconfortés par l’arrivée de Tite. 7 Ce n’est pas seulement sa venue qui nous a réconfortés, mais aussi le réconfort qu’il avait reçu de vous. Il nous a fait part de votre ardent désir de me revoir, de votre profonde tristesse, de votre dévouement à mon égard. Et tout cela n’a fait qu’augmenter ma joie.
8 C’est pourquoi, si je vous ai causé de la peine par ma précédente lettre[a], je ne le regrette pas. Certes, je l’ai d’abord regretté en voyant combien elle vous a attristés sur le moment. 9 Mais maintenant je me réjouis, non pas de votre tristesse, mais de ce que cette tristesse vous ait amenés à changer d’attitude[b]. Car la tristesse que vous avez éprouvée était bonne aux yeux de Dieu, si bien qu’en fait nous ne vous avons causé aucun tort.
10 En effet, la tristesse qui est bonne aux yeux de Dieu produit un changement d’attitude qui conduit au salut et qu’on ne regrette pas. La tristesse du monde, elle, produit la mort.
11 Cette tristesse qui est bonne aux yeux de Dieu, voyez quel empressement elle a produit en vous : quelles excuses vous avez présentées, quelle indignation vous avez manifestée, et quelle crainte, quel ardent désir de me revoir, quel zèle, quelle détermination à punir le mal ! Par toute votre attitude, vous avez prouvé que vous étiez innocents en cette affaire.
12 Bref, si je vous ai écrit, ce n’était pas à cause de celui qui a commis l’offense ni à cause de celui qui l’a subie, mais c’était pour que votre empressement pour nous soit manifesté devant Dieu parmi vous.
13 C’est pourquoi votre réaction nous a réconfortés. A ce réconfort s’est ajoutée une joie bien plus vive encore en voyant combien Tite était heureux à cause de la manière dont vous avez apaisé ses craintes. 14 Ainsi, si je lui ai parlé de vous avec quelque fierté, je n’ai pas eu à en rougir, car l’éloge que je lui ai fait de vous s’est révélé conforme à la vérité, exactement comme tout ce que nous avons pu vous dire. 15 Aussi redouble-t-il d’affection pour vous quand il se rappelle votre obéissance à vous tous, et avec quels égards et quel respect vous l’avez accueilli.
16 Je suis heureux de pouvoir compter sur vous en toutes choses.

7 亲爱的弟兄啊，我们既有这等应许，就当洁净自己，除去身体、灵魂一切的污秽，敬畏神，得以成圣。
2 你们要心地宽大收纳我们。我们未曾亏负谁，未曾败坏谁，未曾占谁的便宜。 3 我说这话不是要定你们的罪，我已经说过，你们常在我们心里，情愿与你们同生同死。 4 我大大地放胆，向你们说话；我因你们多多夸口，满得安慰，我们在一切患难中分外地快乐。
5 我们从前就是到了马其顿的时候，身体也不得安宁，周围遭患难，外有争战，内有惧怕。 6 但那安慰丧气之人的神，借着提多来安慰了我们； 7 不但借着他来，也借着他从你们所得的安慰，安慰了我们。因他把你们的想念、哀恸和向我的热心，都告诉了我，叫我更加欢喜。
依着神的意思忧愁就生出懊悔来
8 我先前写信叫你们忧愁，我后来虽然懊悔，如今却不懊悔，因我知道那信叫你们忧愁不过是暂时的。 9 如今我欢喜，不是因你们忧愁，是因你们从忧愁中生出懊悔来。你们依着神的意思忧愁，凡事就不至于因我们受亏损了。 10 因为依着神的意思忧愁，就生出没有后悔的懊悔来，以致得救；但世俗的忧愁是叫人死。 11 你看，你们依着神的意思忧愁，从此就生出何等的殷勤、自诉、自恨、恐惧、想念、热心、责罚[a]。在这一切事上，你们都表明自己是洁净的。 12 我虽然从前写信给你们，却不是为那亏负人的，也不是为那受人亏负的，乃要在神面前把你们顾念我们的热心表明出来。 13 故此，我们得了安慰。并且在安慰之中，因你们众人使提多心里畅快欢喜，我们就更加欢喜了。 14 我若对提多夸奖了你们什么，也觉得没有惭愧，因我对提多夸奖你们的话成了真的，正如我对你们所说的话也都是真的。 15 并且提多想起你们众人的顺服，是怎样恐惧战兢地接待他，他爱你们的心肠就越发热了。 16 我如今欢喜，能在凡事上为你们放心。

7 Therefore, since we have these promises,(A) dear friends,(B) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(C) out of reverence for God.
Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance
2 Make room for us in your hearts.(D) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. 3 I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(E) that we would live or die with you. 4 I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(F) I am greatly encouraged;(G) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(H)
5 For when we came into Macedonia,(I) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(J)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(K) 6 But God, who comforts the downcast,(L) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(M) 7 and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(N) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(O) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(P) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(Q) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(R) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.
In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(S) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(T) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(U) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(V) receiving him with fear and trembling.(W) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(X)

7 [L Therefore] ·Dear friends [Beloved], we have these promises from God, so we should make ourselves pure—free from ·anything that makes body or soul unclean [L every defilement of flesh and spirit]. ·We should try to become holy in the way we live [or …and in this way bring our holiness to completion/perfection], ·because we respect [out of reverence for; in the fear of] God.

2 ·Open your hearts to [L Make room for] us. We have not done wrong to anyone, we have not ·ruined the faith of [L ruined; corrupted] anyone, and we have not ·cheated [exploited] anyone. 3 I do not say this to ·blame [condemn] you. [L For] I told you before that ·we love you so much [L you are in our hearts so that] we would live or die with you. 4 I ·feel very sure of you [am very confident in you; or have spoken very boldy/frankly to you] and am very proud of you. You give me much ·comfort [encouragement], and in all of our ·troubles [trials; tribulation] I ·have great [overflow with] joy.
5 [L For] When we came into Macedonia [1:16], ·we [our body/flesh] had no rest [C Here Paul picks up his account where he left off at 2:13]. We found ·trouble [trial; tribulation] all around us. We had ·fighting [battles; conflicts] on the outside and fear on the inside. 6 But God, who ·comforts [encourages] those who are ·troubled [downcast; discouraged], ·comforted [encouraged] us when Titus [2:13] came. 7 We were ·comforted [encouraged], not only by his ·coming [arrival; presence] but also by the comfort you gave him. Titus told us about your ·wish to see me [L longing] and ·that you are very sorry for what you did [L your sorrow/mourning; C regret for their treatment of Paul during his previous visit; 1:23; 2:1]. He also told me about your great ·care [or loyalty; L zeal] for me, and when I heard this, I ·was much happier [rejoiced even more].
8 [L For] Even if my letter [C Paul’s “severe” letter that he wrote after his painful visit; see 2:3–4, 9] made you ·sad [grieve], I am not sorry I wrote it. At first I was sorry, because it made you ·sad [grieve], but you ·were sad [grieved] only for a short time. 9 Now I ·am happy [rejoice], not because you were ·made sad [grieved], but because your sorrow ·made you change your lives [led to repentance]. You ·became sad [grieved] in the way God wanted you to, so you were not ·hurt by [or punished because of] us in any way [C the Corinthians’ repentance prevented further sorrow as well as discipline from God]. 10 [L For] The kind of sorrow God wants makes people ·change their hearts and lives [repent], leading to salvation, and ·you cannot be sorry for that [or there can be no regret for that kind of sorrow; L without regret]. But the kind of sorrow the world has ·brings [leads to; results in] death. 11 [L For] See what this sorrow—the sorrow God wanted you to have—has ·done to [led to/produced in] you: It has made you very ·serious [eager; earnest; zealous]. It made you want to ·restore [vindicate; defend] yourselves. It made you ·angry [indignant] and afraid. It made you ·want to see me [long for reconciliation]. It made you ·care [zealous]. It made you want to ·do the right thing [see justice done]. In every way you have ·regained your innocence [or proved yourselves innocent]. 12 I wrote that letter, not because of the one who did the wrong or because of the person who was ·hurt [wronged]. I wrote the letter so you could see, before God, the great ·care [eagerness; zeal] you have for us. 13 That is why we were ·comforted [encouraged].
Not only were we very ·comforted [encouraged], we ·were even happier [rejoiced even more] to see that Titus [2:13] was so ·happy [joyful], because all of you ·made him feel much better [L refreshed his spirit]. 14 [L For] I ·bragged [boasted] to Titus about you, and ·you showed that I was right [L I was not put to shame]. Everything we said to you was true, and you have proved that what we ·bragged [boasted] about to Titus is true. 15 And his ·love [affection; feeling] for you is ·stronger [greater still] when he remembers that you were all ready to obey. You ·welcomed [received] him with ·respect and fear [L fear and trembling]. 16 I ·am very happy [rejoice] that I can ·trust you fully [have complete confidence in you].
