6 We are working together [C with fellow believers, or with God, or with Christ], so we ·beg [urge; appeal to; encourage] you: Do not ·let the grace that you received from God be for nothing [L receive God’s grace in vain]. 2 [L For] God says,
“At the ·right [favorable; acceptable] time I heard your prayers.
On the day of salvation I helped you [Is. 49:8].”
·I tell you that [T Behold; L Look] the “·right [favorable; acceptable] time” is now, ·and [T behold; L look] the “day of salvation” is now.
3 We try not to ·be a problem [cause offense; place an obstacle/stumbling block] for anyone in any way, so that no one will find fault with our ·work [ministry]. 4 But in every way ·we show we are servants of God [or as God’s servants/ministers, we commend ourselves]: ·in accepting many hard things [in/with great endurance], in ·troubles [trials; tribulation], in ·difficulties [hardships; times of need], ·and in great problems [in distress/calamities/L tight spots]. 5 ·We are beaten [L …in beatings/floggings] ·and thrown into prison [L in imprisonments]. ·We meet those who become upset with us and start riots [L …in riots/rebellions]. ·We work hard [L …in hard labors], ·and sometimes we get no sleep [L …in sleepless nights] ·or food [L …in hunger]. 6 ·We show we are servants of God by our pure lives [L …in/by purity; C Paul continues the same list, but moves to positive character traits], ·our understanding [L …in/by knowledge], patience, and kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by ·true [sincere; unhypocritical] love, 7 by ·speaking the truth [or the message/word of truth; C the Gospel], and by God’s power. ·We use our right living [L …with weapons of righteousness] ·to defend ourselves against everything [or both to attack (with a sword) and defend (with a shield); L in our right hands and in our left]. 8 ·Some people honor us, but others blame us [L …through honor/glory and dishonor/disgrace…]. ·Some people say evil things about us, but others say good things [L …through slander and praise…]. ·Some people say we are liars, but we speak the truth [L …(treated) as deceivers, yet true…]. 9 ·We are not known, but we are well known [L …as unknown, yet known…]. ·We seem to be dying, but we continue to live [L …as dying, yet look/behold we live!]. ·We are punished [L …as punished/scourged], but we are not killed. 10 ·We have much sadness [L …as sorrowful/grieving], but we are always rejoicing. ·We are poor [L …as poor], but we are making many people ·rich in faith [L rich]. ·We have [L …as having] nothing, but really we have everything.
11 We have spoken ·freely [openly; frankly] to you, ·Corinthian friends [L Corinthians], and have opened our hearts to you. 12 ·Our feelings of love for you have not stopped [We have not withheld our affection from you; L You are not constrained/held back by us], but you have ·stopped your feelings of love [L constrained/held back your affection] for us. 13 I speak to you ·as if you were [L as] my children. ·Do to us as we have done [As a fair exchange]—open your hearts to us [v. 11].
Warning About Non-Christians
14 Do not ·join yourselves to [become partners with; L be mismatched/unevenly yoked with] unbelievers. ·Good and bad do not belong together [L For what partnership has righteousness and wickedness/lawlessness?]. ·Light and darkness cannot share together [Or what fellowship/partnership can light have with darkness?]. 15 How can Christ and Belial [C the devil; Satan] have any ·agreement [harmony; accord]? What can a believer ·have together [share in common] with a nonbeliever? 16 What ·agreement [union] can the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God [1 Cor. 3:16]. As God said: “I will live with them and walk with them. And I will be their God, and they will be my people [Lev. 26:11–12; Jer. 32:38; Ezek. 37:27].”
17 “[L Therefore] ·Leave those people [L Come out from their midst],
and be separate, says the Lord.
Touch nothing that is ·unclean [polluted, defiled],
and I will ·accept [receive; welcome] you [Is. 52:11; Ezek. 20:41].”
18 “I will be your father,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty [2 Sam. 7:14].”

6 Nós, cooperando portanto com Deus, vos exortamos a que não deixem que a sua graça vos seja anunciada em vão. 2 Porque ele diz pela boca do profeta Isaías:
“Ouvi-te, em tempo oportuno,
e socorri-te no dia da salvação.”[a]
Pois agora é esse tempo oportuno, é agora o dia da salvação.
As dificuldades de Paulo
3 Assim sendo, procuramos viver de maneira que nunca ninguém se sinta chocado por causa da nossa conduta, de forma que a nossa atividade para Deus nunca venha a ser censurada. 4 De facto, em tudo o que fazemos procuramos mostrar que somos servos de Deus, suportando tudo com muita paciência: as aflições, as necessidades, os sofrimentos. 5 Fomos já açoitados, postos na prisão, enfrentámos multidões furiosas, sabemos o que é o trabalho esgotante, noites sem dormir, fome. 6 Demonstrámos integridade nas nossas vidas, mostrámos conhecimento e demos provas de paciência. Temos sido bondosos, com uma afeição verdadeira inspirada pelo Espírito Santo. 7 Proclamámos a palavra da verdade e o poder de Deus se tem manifestado; temos combatido com as armas ofensivas e defensivas da justiça. 8 Permanecemos leais ao Senhor, quer os outros nos honrem ou nos desprezem, quer nos censurem ou nos elogiem. Somos verdadeiros, embora nos tratem como impostores. 9 O mundo ignora-nos, mas Deus conhece-nos. Dizem que não poderemos continuar a viver por muito tempo, e eis que continuamos vivendo. É verdade que temos sido bastante maltratados, mas não morremos. 10 Temos sido entristecidos, mas nunca perdemos a alegria do Senhor. Somos pobres, mas enriquecemos os outros espiritualmente. Nada nos pertence, mas temos tudo.
11 Ó queridos coríntios, falámos agora convosco com toda a franqueza; abrimos o nosso coração. 12 E se, da vossa parte, os vossos sentimentos não correspondem aos nossos será certamente por culpa vossa. 13 Falo-vos como a verdadeiros filhos: abram-nos igualmente os corações.
Associações com incrédulos
14 Não se associem com os descrentes. Com efeito, como seria possível conciliar a justiça com a iniquidade? E que haverá de comum entre a luz e as trevas? 15 Que harmonia poderia haver entre Cristo e o Diabo? Que parte têm em comum um crente e um descrente? 16 Que aliança poderia estabelecer-se entre o templo de Deus e os ídolos? Porque vocês são o templo do Deus vivo. Tal como Deus disse:
“Neles habitarei e andarei no meio deles.
Eu serei o seu Deus e eles serão o meu povo.”[b]
17 E foi por isso que também o Senhor lhes disse:
“Saiam do meio deles. Afastem-se.
Não tenham contactos com aquilo que eu repudio,
e eu vos receberei.”[c]
18 “Serei para vocês um Pai,
e vocês serão para mim filhos e filhas,
disse o Senhor Todo-Poderoso.”

6 As God’s co-workers(A) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(B) 2 For he says,
I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
Paul’s Hardships
3 We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(D) so that our ministry will not be discredited. 4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments(E) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(F) 6 in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(G) and in sincere love;(H) 7 in truthful speech(I) and in the power of God;(J) with weapons of righteousness(K) in the right hand and in the left; 8 through glory and dishonor,(L) bad report(M) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(N) 9 known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(O) and yet we live on;(P) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(Q) poor, yet making many rich;(R) having nothing,(S) and yet possessing everything.(T)
11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(U) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(V)—open wide your hearts(W) also.
Warning Against Idolatry
14 Do not be yoked together(X) with unbelievers.(Y) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(Z) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[b]?(AA) Or what does a believer(AB) have in common with an unbeliever?(AC) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(AD) For we are the temple(AE) of the living God.(AF) As God has said:
“I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”[c](AG)
17 Therefore,
“Come out from them(AH)
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.”[d](AI)
