⁶ For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”^[a](A) made his light shine in our hearts^(B) to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.^(C)

⁷ But we have this treasure in jars of clay^(D) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God^(E) and not from us. ⁸ We are hard pressed on every side,^(F) but not crushed; perplexed,^(G) but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted,^(H) but not abandoned;^(I) struck down, but not destroyed.^{(J) 10} We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,^(K) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.^{(L) 11} For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake,^(M) so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. ¹² So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.^(N)

¹³ It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”^[b](O) Since we have that same spirit of^[c] faith,^(P) we also believe and therefore speak, ¹⁴ because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead^(Q) will also raise us with Jesus^(R) and present us with you to himself.^{(S) 15} All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving^(T) to overflow to the glory of God.

¹⁶ Therefore we do not lose heart.^(U) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly^(V) we are being renewed^(W) day by day. ¹⁷ For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.^{(X) 18} So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,^(Y) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

⁷ But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss^(A) for the sake of Christ. ⁸ What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing^(B) Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ^{(C) 9} and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,^(D) but that which is through faith in^[a] Christ—the righteousness^(E) that comes from God on the basis of faith.^{(F) 10} I want to know^(G) Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings,^(H) becoming like him in his death,^{(I) 11} and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection^(J) from the dead.

¹² Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal,^(K) but I press on to take hold^(L) of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.^{(M) 13} Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind^(N) and straining toward what is ahead, ¹⁴ I press on^(O) toward the goal to win the prize^(P) for which God has called^(Q) me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Following Paul’s Example

¹⁵ All of us, then, who are mature^(R) should take such a view of things.^(S) And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.^(T)

Paul’s Change of Plans

¹² Now this is our boast: Our conscience^(A) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity^[a](B) and godly sincerity.^(C) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom^(D) but on God’s grace. ¹³ For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, ¹⁴ as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.^(E)

¹⁵ Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you^(F) first so that you might benefit twice.^{(G) 16} I wanted to visit you on my way^(H) to Macedonia^(I) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way^(J) to Judea.^{(K) 17} Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner^(L) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?

¹⁸ But as surely as God is faithful,^(M) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” ¹⁹ For the Son of God,^(N) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas^[b](O) and Timothy^(P)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always^(Q) been “Yes.” ²⁰ For no matter how many promises^(R) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”^(S) is spoken by us to the glory of God.^{(T) 21} Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm^(U) in Christ. He anointed^(V) us, ²² set his seal^(W) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.^(X)

²³ I call God as my witness^(Y)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you^(Z) that I did not return to Corinth. ²⁴ Not that we lord it over^(AA) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.^(AB)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run^(A) with perseverance^(B) the race marked out for us, ² fixing our eyes on Jesus,^(C) the pioneer^(D) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,^(E) scorning its shame,^(F) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.^(G)
