3 Are we beginning to be like those false teachers of yours who must tell you all about themselves and bring long letters of recommendation with them? I think you hardly need someone’s letter to tell you about us, do you? And we don’t need a recommendation from you, either! 2 The only letter I need is you yourselves! By looking at the good change in your hearts, everyone can see that we have done a good work among you. 3 They can see that you are a letter from Christ, written by us. It is not a letter written with pen and ink, but by the Spirit of the living God; not one carved on stone, but in human hearts.
4 We dare to say these good things about ourselves only because of our great trust in God through Christ, that he will help us to be true to what we say, 5 and not because we think we can do anything of lasting value by ourselves. Our only power and success comes from God. 6 He is the one who has helped us tell others about his new agreement to save them. We do not tell them that they must obey every law of God or die; but we tell them there is life for them from the Holy Spirit. The old way, trying to be saved by keeping the Ten Commandments, ends in death; in the new way, the Holy Spirit gives them life.
7 Yet that old system of law that led to death began with such glory that people could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For as he gave them God’s law to obey, his face shone out with the very glory of God—though the brightness was already fading away. 8 Shall we not expect far greater glory in these days when the Holy Spirit is giving life? 9 If the plan that leads to doom was glorious, much more glorious is the plan that makes men right with God. 10 In fact, that first glory as it shone from Moses’ face is worth nothing at all in comparison with the overwhelming glory of the new agreement. 11 So if the old system that faded into nothing was full of heavenly glory, the glory of God’s new plan for our salvation is certainly far greater, for it is eternal.
12 Since we know that this new glory will never go away, we can preach with great boldness, 13 and not as Moses did, who put a veil over his face so that the Israelis could not see the glory fade away.
14 Not only Moses’ face was veiled, but his people’s minds and understanding were veiled and blinded too. Even now when the Scripture is read it seems as though Jewish hearts and minds are covered by a thick veil, because they cannot see and understand the real meaning of the Scriptures. For this veil of misunderstanding can be removed only by believing in Christ. 15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings their hearts are blind and they think that obeying the Ten Commandments is the way to be saved.
16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord from his sins, then the veil is taken away. 17 The Lord is the Spirit who gives them life, and where he is there is freedom from trying to be saved by keeping the laws of God.[a] 18 But we Christians have no veil over our faces; we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him.

3 ¿Acaso parece que estuviéramos alabándonos a nosotros mismos de nuevo? ¿Acaso es que necesitamos presentarles o pedirles una carta de recomendación como lo hacen otros? 2 Ustedes mismos son la carta escrita en nuestro corazón, que toda la gente lee y conoce. 3 Ustedes demuestran que son una carta de Cristo escrita por nosotros, no con tinta, sino con el Espíritu del Dios viviente. No está escrita en tablas de piedra,[a] sino en el corazón de los hombres.
4 Por medio de Cristo, confiamos en Dios cuando decimos esto. 5 No queremos decir que nos creemos capaces de hacer algo gracias a nosotros mismos, pues Dios es quien nos da la capacidad para hacer todo lo que hacemos. 6 Sólo Dios nos hace capaces de ser sus siervos del nuevo pacto que él ha hecho con su pueblo. Este nuevo pacto no está basado en una ley escrita, sino en el Espíritu, porque la ley escrita lleva a la muerte, en cambio el Espíritu lleva a la vida.
El nuevo pacto trae más gloria
7 El antiguo pacto que llevaba a la muerte y que estaba escrito sobre piedras llegó con tanto esplendor que la gente de Israel no podía mirar el rostro de Moisés por mucho tiempo. Su rostro brillaba con una gloria inmensa que, sin embargo, estaba destinada a desaparecer. 8 ¿Acaso no tendría más gloria el trabajo al servicio del nuevo pacto que lleva al Espíritu? 9 Pues si tiene gloria aquello que lleva a la condena de los pecadores, ¿cuánta más gloria tendrá lo que hace que los pecadores puedan ser aprobados ante Dios? 10 Aquello que alguna vez tuvo esplendor, ahora ya no lo tiene, pues el nuevo esplendor que ha llegado es mucho más grande. 11 Si aquello que estaba destinado a desaparecer tenía gloria, aun mucha más gloria debe tener aquello que es permanente.
12 Ya que esa es nuestra esperanza, hablamos abiertamente. 13 Nosotros no somos como Moisés. Él se tapaba la cara con un velo para que los israelitas no se fijaran en el final de aquello que estaba destinado a desaparecer. 14 El pueblo tenía la mente cerrada, e incluso hoy, cuando leen el antiguo pacto, los cubre el mismo velo. Todavía tienen ese velo ya que es sólo por medio de Cristo como puede ser retirado. 15 Aun hoy, cuando leen la ley de Moisés tienen un velo sobre su corazón, 16 y cuando alguno vuelve al Señor,[b] el velo es retirado.[c] 17 En este caso, «el Señor» significa el Espíritu y donde está el Espíritu del Señor, hay libertad. 18 Con la cara descubierta, todos nos quedamos mirando fijamente la gloria del Señor, y así somos transformados en su imagen cada vez con más gloria. Este cambio viene del Señor, es decir, del Espíritu.

3 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?
2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:
5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

3 ¿Estamos ya otra vez haciéndonos la propaganda? ¿Es que necesitamos, como ciertos individuos, presentarnos a vosotros con cartas de recomendación o recibirlas de vosotros? 2 ¡Nuestra carta de recomendación sois vosotros mismos! La llevamos escrita en el corazón y todo el mundo puede conocerla y leerla. 3 Y bien se os nota que sois carta de Cristo redactada por nosotros; una carta escrita no con tinta, sino con el Espíritu de Dios vivo; no en frías losas de piedra, sino en las páginas palpitantes del corazón.
4 Si hacemos gala de semejante confianza es porque la hemos alcanzado de Dios por medio de Cristo. 5 No presumimos, pues, de estar capacitados para hacer algo por cuenta propia; nuestra capacidad proviene de Dios. 6 Él fue quien nos capacitó para ser ministros de una alianza nueva, basada no en la letra de la ley, sino en la fuerza del Espíritu; y la letra de la ley es causa de muerte, mientras que el Espíritu lo es de vida.
7 Y si lo que era instrumento de muerte, grabado con letras sobre piedra, fue proclamado con tal gloria que los israelitas no podían fijar sus ojos en el rostro de Moisés a causa de su resplandor —que era perecedero—, 8 ¿no será mucho más glorioso lo que es instrumento del Espíritu? 9 Pues si lo que es instrumento de condenación estuvo rodeado de gloria, ¿no lo estará mucho más lo que es instrumento de salvación? 10 En efecto, lo que fue glorioso ha dejado de serlo al quedar eclipsado por una gloria más excelsa. 11 Porque si ya lo perecedero fue glorioso, mucho más glorioso será lo permanente.
12 Con una esperanza así, ¿no vamos a actuar con plena libertad? 13 Pues no es nuestro caso el de Moisés, que se cubría el rostro con un velo para evitar que los israelitas contemplaran el apagarse de un resplandor perecedero. 14 A pesar de todo, sus mentes siguen ofuscadas y el velo aquel, que sólo Cristo puede destruir, permanece sin descorrer hasta el día de hoy cuando leen las Escrituras de la antigua alianza. 15 Hasta hoy, efectivamente, un velo nubla su mente siempre que leen a Moisés; 16 sólo cuando se conviertan al Señor, desaparecerá el velo. 17 Y es que el Señor es el Espíritu, y donde está el Espíritu del Señor hay libertad. 18 En cuanto a nosotros, llevando todos el rostro descubierto y reflejando la gloria del Señor, vamos incorporando su imagen cada vez más resplandeciente bajo el influjo del Espíritu del Señor.
