Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,(A) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you(B) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.(C)

So that, on the contrary, rather you ought to give selichah (forgiveness) and chozek (strength) to him lest efsher (perhaps) such a one may be swallowed up by overwhelming remorse.

Therefore I urge you to confirm to him your ahavah (love).
