God redt en bemoedigt altijd, wát er ook gebeurt
1 Dit is een brief van Paulus en van broeder Timoteüs. Ik, Paulus, heb van God de taak gekregen om het goede nieuws van Jezus Christus aan de mensen te brengen. We doen de groeten aan de gemeente van God in Korinte. Ook aan alle andere gelovigen in de provincie Achaje. 2 Ik bid dat onze God en Vader in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn. En dat jullie vol zullen zijn van de vrede van God onze Vader en van de Heer Jezus Christus.
3 We prijzen de God en Vader van onze Heer Jezus Christus. Hij is altijd in alles goed en vriendelijk voor ons. 4 Hij bemoedigt ons in al onze moeilijkheden. Daardoor kunnen wij ook weer andere mensen bemoedigen die in moeilijkheden zijn. We bemoedigen hen met dezelfde bemoediging waarmee wij zelf ook door God zijn bemoedigd. 5 Want we hebben veel te lijden omdat we in Christus geloven. Maar daarom zullen we ook heel veel bemoediging krijgen van Christus. 6 We hebben veel moeilijkheden. Maar dat is dus om jullie te kunnen bemoedigen en redden als júllie moeilijkheden hebben. En als wíj bemoedigd worden, dan bemoedigt dat ook jullie. Want dan weten jullie, dat jullie net zo bemoedigd zullen worden als wij. 7 Wanneer jullie net zoveel moeten lijden als wij, zullen jullie ook net zo bemoedigd worden als wij. Dat weet ik zeker.
8 We willen dat jullie weten wat een grote moeilijkheden we in Asia (= Turkije) hebben gehad. Het was bijna niet te verdragen. 9 We gingen er maar van uit dat ons doodvonnis al was getekend. Zo leerden we dat we niet op onze eigen kracht moeten vertrouwen. Nee, we moeten altijd vertrouwen op God, die de doden weer levend maakt. 10 En Hij heeft ons leven gered. En we vertrouwen er op dat Hij ons steeds weer zal redden. 11 Jullie kunnen ons daarbij helpen, door voor ons te bidden. Als veel mensen voor ons bidden, zullen ook veel mensen God prijzen voor alle keren dat Hij ons heeft gered en kracht heeft gegeven.
Paulus' reisplannen
12 We zijn er trots op dat we een zuiver geweten hebben. Want we zijn altijd tegen iedereen eerlijk en oprecht geweest. Vooral tegen jullie. Niet doordat wij zelf zo wijs zijn, maar door de kracht van God. 13 Alles wat we jullie schrijven is helemaal zonder oneerlijke bedoelingen. Ik hoop dat jullie dat weten. 14 En ik hoop dan ook dat jullie net zo blij met ons zullen zijn als wij met jullie, op de dag dat onze Heer Jezus terugkomt.
15 Omdat ik daarop vertrouw, had ik al eerder het plan om naar jullie toe te komen. Want ik wilde een tweede keer een zegen voor jullie zijn. 16 Ik had via Korinte naar Macedonië willen reizen. En dan van Macedonië terug naar jullie. Dan hadden jullie mij daarna kunnen helpen met mijn reis naar Judea. 17 Maar ik heb mijn plannen moeten veranderen. Vinden jullie daarom dat ik niet te vertrouwen ben? Denken jullie dat ik net zo onbetrouwbaar ben als de ongelovige mensen? Dat ik 'ja' zeg als ik 'nee' bedoel? 18 Maar ik zeg geen 'ja' als ik 'nee' bedoel! God weet dat ik zo niet ben. 19 Want Gods Zoon Jezus Christus, over wie Silvanus, Timoteüs en ik jullie hebben verteld, zegt ook geen 'ja' als Hij 'nee' bedoelt. Hij is altijd 'ja'. 20 Want alles wat God heeft beloofd, heeft Hij door Jezus ook gedaan. Jezus is Gods 'ja'. Daarom zeggen we ook door Hem 'Amen! Zo is het!' En dat eert God. 21 God zorgt ervoor dat we samen met jullie stevig zullen blijven staan in ons geloof in Christus. Hij heeft ons met zijn Geest gezalfd. 22 Daarmee heeft Hij als het ware zijn eigendomsstempel op ons gezet als teken dat we van Hem zijn. Want Hij heeft ons zijn Geest in ons hart gegeven. Zijn Geest is de voorproef en het bewijs van wat nog komen zal.
23 God weet waarom ik niet meer naar Korinte ben gekomen. Dat was omdat ik het jullie niet moeilijk wilde maken. Want ik zou streng tegen jullie hebben moeten zijn. 24 Niet dat ik over jullie wil heersen. Ik wil jullie gewoon blij kunnen maken. Want ik weet dat jullie stevig staan door jullie geloof.

4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
11 Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
13 For we write none other things unto you, that what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;
14 As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.
15 And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;
16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.
17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?
18 But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.
19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
23 Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.
24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

God of All Comfort
3 (F)Blessed be the (G)God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and (H)God of all comfort, 4 (I)who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as we share abundantly in (J)Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.[a] 6 (K)If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you (L)share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.
8 For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[b] of (M)the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us (N)rely not on ourselves (O)but on God (P)who raises the dead. 10 (Q)He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. Paul's Change of Plans
12 For our boast is this, (U)the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity[c] and (V)godly sincerity, (W)not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. 13 For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand— 14 just as you did (X)partially understand us—that (Y)on the day of our Lord Jesus (Z)you will boast of us as (AA)we will boast of you.
15 Because I was sure of this, (AB)I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have (AC)a second (AD)experience of grace. 16 I wanted to visit you (AE)on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea. 17 Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans (AF)according to the flesh, ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time? 18 As surely as (AG)God is faithful, (AH)our word to you has not been Yes and No. 19 For (AI)the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, (AJ)Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but (AK)in him it is always Yes. 20 For (AL)all the promises of God find their Yes in him. Comfort in Suffering

Delivered from Suffering

Paul’s Sincerity

Sparing the Church

1 Kära vänner! Detta brev kommer från Paulus, som är utvald av Gud och utsänd av Jesus Kristus, och från vår käre broder Timotheos. Vi skriver till er, alla kristna i Korinth och i hela Grekland.
2 Nåd och frid från Gud vår Far och Herren Jesus Kristus.
Gud har hjälpt oss
3-4 Vilken stor Gud vi har. Han är vår Herres Jesu Kristi Far. Från honom kommer all omtanke och tröst, och den ger han oss för att vi ska kunna ge samma hjälp och tröst vidare till andra som är i svårigheter och behöver vår sympati och inspiration.
5 Ni kan vara säkra på att ju mer vi får lida för Kristus, desto mer kommer han att ge oss av tröst och uppmuntran.
6-7 Vi möter stora svårigheter i vårt arbete att visa er Guds frälsning och omtanke. Men Gud har gett oss nytt mod mitt i våra bekymmer, och det kommer också ni att få glädje av. Ni kommer nämligen att förstå med vilken kärlek Gud vill ta hand om er, när ni får gå igenom samma lidanden. Han ska ge er kraft att stå ut med dem.
8 Kära bröder, jag tror att ni bör få veta lite om den svåra tid vi hade i Asien. Vi pressades så långt över vår förmåga att vi trodde vår sista stund var kommen.
9 Vi kände oss som dödsdömda och såg hur maktlösa vi var när det gällde att hjälpa oss själva. Men det hade ändå något gott med sig. Vi lärde oss att lägga allt i Guds händer. Bara han kunde rädda oss. Han kan ju till och med uppväcka döda.
10 Han hjälpte oss också och räddade oss från en fruktansvärd död, och vi är övertygade om att han ska stå vid vår sida också i fortsättningen.
11 Men ni måste hjälpa oss genom att be för oss. Då blir vi också många som kommer att tacka och lovprisa Gud för hans omsorg om oss!
Ändrade resplaner
12 Vi är glada över att helt ärligt kunna säga att vi i allt vad vi har gjort har varit uppriktiga och haft ett gott uppsåt. Vi har bara litat på Herrens hjälp och inte på vår egen förmåga. Och detta är om möjligt ännu mer sant när det gäller vårt handlingssätt mot er.
13-14 Mina brev har varit ärliga och gått rakt på sak. Jag har inte skrivit något mellan raderna! Även om ni inte känner mig särskilt väl (vilket jag hoppas att ni så småningom ska göra), så vill jag att ni ska försöka acceptera mig som jag är och rentav känna er stolta över mig. På sätt och vis har ni ju faktiskt redan börjat göra det, på samma sätt som jag kommer att vara stolt över er den dag då vår Herre Jesus kommer tillbaka.
15-16 Det var för att jag var så säker på er förståelse och ert förtroende som jag räknade med att stanna och hälsa på er på min resa till Makedonien, och på det sättet ge ännu ett bevis på min kärlek till er. På vägen tillbaka hade jag också tänkt stanna för att bli utrustad för den fortsatta färden till Judeen.
17 Nu kanske ni frågar varför jag ändrade mina planer. Hade jag inte redan bestämt mig? Eller är jag som vissa människor som säger ja och menar nej?
18 Absolut inte! Lika säkert som att Gud är sann, så är jag inte en sådan människa. Mitt ja betyder ja.
19 Timotheos och Silvanus och jag har berättat för er om Jesus Kristus, Guds Son. Han är inte den som säger ja när han menar nej. Han gör alltid precis som han säger.
20 Han fullföljer och uppfyller alla Guds löften, hur många de än är. Vi har berättat för alla hur trofast han är, och på det sättet ärat hans namn.
21 Det är Gud som har förenat oss i tron på Kristus och utrustat oss att som apostlar predika de goda nyheterna.
22 Han har satt sin stämpel på oss, sin Ande. Det visar att vi är hans egendom. Att ha del i den helige Ande är en garanti för att vi tillhör honom, och ett förskott på allt det som han kommer att ge oss.
23 Jag kallar Gud till vittne på att vad jag säger är absolut sant. Skälet till att jag inte har besökt er ännu är att jag vill bespara er mina tillrättavisningar.
24 Även om jag inte kan göra mycket för att stärka er tro när jag kommer ? den är ju redan stark ? så vill jag komma för att glädja er. Jag vill göra er lyckliga, inte ledsna.
