Paulus legt uit dat hij een echte boodschapper van God is
10 Verder wil ik jullie iets vragen met het geduld en de vriendelijkheid van Christus. De mensen zeggen namelijk over mij dat ik verlegen ben als ik bij jullie ben, maar dat ik op een afstand een grote mond tegen jullie durf te hebben. 2 Wat ik jullie wil vragen is dit: zorg ervoor dat ik, ook wanneer ik bij jullie kom, niet streng tegen jullie zal hoeven te zijn. Ik zal alleen streng zijn tegen de mensen die zeggen dat ik alleen maar op mijn eigen belang uit ben.
3 Want we zijn wel gewone mensen die in deze wereld leven, maar we gebruiken geen menselijke wapens. 4 De wapens van onze strijd zijn geen menselijke wapens, maar geestelijke wapens. Het zijn sterke wapens van God, die elke geestelijke muur kunnen afbreken. 5 Als mensen God niet willen gehoorzamen, kunnen we met die wapens elke redenering van hen uit de weg ruimen. Alles wat in de weg staat om God werkelijk te leren kennen, kunnen we als het ware gevangen nemen: alle verkeerde gedachten, redeneringen en ideeën. En daarna kunnen we die gehoorzaam maken aan Christus. 6 We staan klaar om zo elke ongehoorzaamheid met deze wapens uit de weg te ruimen, totdat jullie Christus in alles gehoorzamen.
7 Jullie kijken alleen maar naar iemands buitenkant. Maar als iemand zeker weet dat hij bij Christus hoort, dan moet hij goed bedenken dat wij óók, net als hij, bij Christus horen. 8 Ik zou nog veel meer kunnen opscheppen over het recht dat ik van de Heer heb gekregen om jullie geloof op te bouwen. (Ik wil het beslist niet afbreken!) En het zou nog steeds waar zijn wat ik zeg! 9 Misschien lijkt het er op dat ik jullie met mijn brieven bang wil maken. 10 Sommige mensen zeggen: 'Zijn brieven zijn indrukwekkend en streng. Maar als je Paulus zelf ziet, stelt hij niet zoveel voor. Je hoeft je echt niets van hem aan te trekken.' 11 Maar ze hebben het mis. Ik wil dat ze weten dat ik van dichtbij precies hetzelfde ben als in mijn brieven!
12 We durven onszelf niet te vergelijken met die boodschappers van God die zichzelf zo geweldig vinden. Maar zij hebben niet door, dat ze zich afmeten aan zichzelf. En ze vergelijken zich met elkaar. Ze hebben niet door hoe dom dat is. 13 Maar wij zullen niet te veel over onszelf opscheppen. We zullen ons precies houden aan de grenzen van de taak die God ons heeft gegeven. Een deel van die taak was om ook naar jullie te gaan met het goede nieuws. 14 We dachten dat we jullie met het goede nieuws konden bereiken. En daarin hebben we ons niet vergist. Want we hébben jullie met het goede nieuws van Christus bereikt. 15 En daarmee gingen we niet buiten de grenzen van de taak die God ons had gegeven. Want nog niemand anders had het goede nieuws al eerder bij jullie gebracht. We scheppen dus niet op over werk wat eigenlijk door anderen is gedaan. Als we opscheppen, is dat over werk wat we zélf hebben gedaan. Als jullie geloof blijft groeien, vertrouwen we er op dat we jullie geloof steeds verder zullen kunnen opbouwen. Dat is dan nog steeds binnen de grenzen die God ons voor onze taak heeft gegeven. 16 Daarna kunnen we niet alleen bij jullie, maar ook nog verder weg het goede nieuws brengen. En dan scheppen we nog steeds niet op over werk wat anderen volgens hún opdracht van God daar al hebben gedaan voordat wij daar komen.
17 In de Boeken staat: "Als iemand wil opscheppen, laat hij dan opscheppen over wat de Heer heeft gedaan en niet over zichzelf." 18 Als iemand trots op zichzelf is, betekent dat niets. Het gaat erom dat de Heer trots op je moet kunnen zijn.

10 Now (A)I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—(B)who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. 2 But I beg you (C)that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 (D)For the weapons (E)of our warfare are not [a]carnal but (F)mighty in God (G)for pulling down strongholds, 5 (H)casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 (I)and being ready to punish all disobedience when (J)your obedience is fulfilled.
Reality of Paul’s Authority
7 (K)Do you look at things according to the outward appearance? (L)If anyone is convinced in himself that he is Christ’s, let him again consider this in himself, that just as he is Christ’s, even [b]so (M)we are Christ’s. 8 For even if I should boast somewhat more (N)about our authority, which the Lord gave [c]us for [d]edification and not for your destruction, (O)I shall not be ashamed— 9 lest I seem to terrify you by letters. 10 “For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but (P)his bodily presence is weak, and his (Q)speech contemptible.” 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such we will also be in deed when we are present.
Limits of Paul’s Authority
12 (R)For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 (S)We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), (T)for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, (U)in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.
17 But (V)“he who glories, let him glory in the Lord.” 18 For (W)not he who commends himself is approved, but (X)whom the Lord commends.

10 By the humility and gentleness(A) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(B) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! 2 I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(C) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(D) 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(E) 4 The weapons we fight with(F) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(G) to demolish strongholds.(H) 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(I) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(J) to Christ. 6 And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(K)
7 You are judging by appearances.[a](L) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(M) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(N) 8 So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(O) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(P) I will not be ashamed of it. 9 I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(Q) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(R) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.
12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(S) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(T) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(U) with the gospel of Christ.(V) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(W) by boasting of work done by others.(X) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(Y) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(Z) in the regions beyond you.(AA) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[b](AB) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(AC) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(AD)

10 (A)I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the (B)meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— 2 I beg of you (C)that when I am present I may not have to show (D)boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the (E)weapons of (F)our warfare are not of the flesh but have (G)divine power (H)to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and (I)every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to (J)obey Christ, 6 (K)being ready to punish every disobedience, (L)when your obedience is complete.
7 (M)Look at what is before your eyes. (N)If anyone is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that just as (O)he is Christ's, (P)so also are we. 8 For even if I boast a little too much of (Q)our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. 9 I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but (R)his bodily presence is weak, and (S)his speech of no account.” 11 Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we dare to classify or (T)compare ourselves with some of those who (U)are commending themselves. 13 But we will not boast (W)beyond limits, but will (X)boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, (Y)to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. (Z)For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that (AA)as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be (AB)greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. 17 “Let (AC)the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 18 For it is (AD)not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one (AE)whom the Lord commends.
