⁵ For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’s sake.^(A)

²⁴ I do not mean to imply that we lord it over your faith; rather, we are workers with you for your joy because you stand firm in faith.^(A)

⁵ As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed,^{(A) 6} nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others,^(B)

²³ but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to gentiles,^(A)

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep.^(A)

² to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight,^[a] not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it,^[b] not for sordid gain but eagerly.^{(A) 3} Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock.^{(B) 4} And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away.^{(C) 5} In the same way, you who are younger must be subject to the elders.^[c] And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for

¹¹ they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what it is not right to teach.^(A)

¹⁰ Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.^(A)
