⁸ Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me,^(A)

⁷ In the days of his flesh, Jesus^[a] offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.^(A)

³⁹ And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, yet not what I want but what you want.”^{(A) 40} Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?^{(B) 41} Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;^[a] the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”^{(C) 42} Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”^{(D) 43} Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.

¹¹ “I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not carried out my commands.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all night.^(A)

¹⁶ David therefore pleaded with God for the child; David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.^{(A) 17} The elders of his house stood beside him urging him to rise from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. ¹⁸ On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “While the child was still alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us; how then can we tell him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.”

²¹ And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”^{(A) 22} But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”^[a] They said to him, “We are able.”^(B)

The Lord said to me, ‘Enough from you! Never speak to me of this matter again!^{(B) 27} Go up to the top of Pisgah and look around you to the west, to the north, to the south, and to the east. Look well, for you shall not cross over this Jordan.^(C)
