⁶ And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.^(A)

⁹ Another reason I wrote you^(A) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.^(B)

¹⁵ And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,^(A) receiving him with fear and trembling.^(B)

²⁶ He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men!^(A) Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away^(B) because of all their sins.^(C)” ²⁷ So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.^(D) Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children^(E) and little ones at the entrances to their tents.^(F)

²⁸ Then Moses said, “This is how you will know^(G) that the Lord has sent me^(H) to do all these things and that it was not my idea: ²⁹ If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.^{(I) 30} But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth^(J) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,^(K) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.^(L)”

² I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:^(A) On my return I will not spare^(B) those who sinned earlier^(C) or any of the others,

¹⁰ This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh^(A) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.^(B)

³ For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.^(A) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus^(B) on the one who has been doing this. ⁴ So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, ⁵ hand this man over^(C) to Satan^(D) for the destruction of the flesh,^[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.^(E)

³ Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan^(A) has so filled your heart^(B) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit^(C) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?^{(D) 4} Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?^(E) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”^(F)

⁵ When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.^(G) And great fear^(H) seized all who heard what had happened. ⁶ Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,^(I) and carried him out and buried him.

⁷ About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. ⁸ Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”^(J)

⁹ Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?^(K) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

¹⁰ At that moment she fell down at his feet and died.^(L) Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.^{(M) 11} Great fear^(N) seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

¹⁰ So when I come,^(A) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.^(B) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.^(C)
