¹¹ Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

¹⁰ This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh^(A) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.^(B)

² I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:^(A) On my return I will not spare^(B) those who sinned earlier^(C) or any of the others, ³ since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.^(D) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.

²⁰ For I am afraid that when I come^(A) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.^(B) I fear that there may be discord,^(C) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,^(D) slander,^(E) gossip,^(F) arrogance^(G) and disorder.^(H)

¹⁹ But I will come to you very soon,^(A) if the Lord is willing,^(B) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. ²⁰ For the kingdom of God is not a matter of^(C) talk but of power.^(D)
