⁶ If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;^(A) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.

¹⁰ Therefore I endure everything^(A) for the sake of the elect,^(B) that they too may obtain the salvation^(C) that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.^(D)

⁴ who comforts us^(A) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

¹⁵ All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving^(A) to overflow to the glory of God.

¹⁶ Therefore we do not lose heart.^(B) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly^(C) we are being renewed^(D) day by day. ¹⁷ For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.^{(E) 18} So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,^(F) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

¹⁹ for I know that through your prayers^(A) and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ^(B) what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.^[a](C)

⁵ Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.^(A)

²⁸ And we know that in all things God works for the good^(A) of those who love him, who^[a] have been called^(B) according to his purpose.^(C)

¹³ I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

¹⁰ They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.^{(A) 11} No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace^(B) for those who have been trained by it.
