6 Alors Salomon dit: L'Éternel veut habiter dans l'obscurité!
2 Et moi, j'ai bâti une maison qui sera ta demeure, un lieu où tu résideras éternellement!
3 Le roi tourna son visage, et bénit toute l'assemblée d'Israël; et toute l'assemblée d'Israël était debout.
4 Et il dit: Béni soit l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, qui a parlé de sa bouche à David, mon père, et qui accomplit par sa puissance ce qu'il avait déclaré en disant:
5 Depuis le jour où j'ai fait sortir mon peuple du pays d'Égypte, je n'ai point choisi de ville parmi toutes les tribus d'Israël pour qu'il y fût bâti une maison où résidât mon nom, et je n'ai point choisi d'homme pour qu'il fût chef de mon peuple d'Israël;
6 mais j'ai choisi Jérusalem pour que mon nom y résidât, et j'ai choisi David pour qu'il régnât sur mon peuple d'Israël!
7 David, mon père, avait l'intention de bâtir une maison au nom de l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
8 Et l'Éternel dit à David, mon père: Puisque tu as eu l'intention de bâtir une maison à mon nom, tu as bien fait d'avoir eu cette intention.
9 Seulement, ce ne sera pas toi qui bâtiras la maison; mais ce sera ton fils, sorti de tes entrailles, qui bâtira la maison à mon nom.
10 L'Éternel a accompli la parole qu'il avait prononcée. Je me suis élevé à la place de David, mon père, et je me suis assis sur le trône d'Israël, comme l'avait annoncé l'Éternel, et j'ai bâti la maison au nom de l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
11 J'y ai placé l'arche où est l'alliance de l'Éternel, l'alliance qu'il a faite avec les enfants d'Israël.
12 Salomon se plaça devant l'autel de l'Éternel, en face de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, et il étendit ses mains.
13 Car Salomon avait fait une tribune d'airain, et l'avait mise au milieu du parvis; elle était longue de cinq coudées, large de cinq coudées, et haute de trois coudées; il s'y plaça, se mit à genoux en face de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, et étendit ses mains vers le ciel. Et il dit:
14 O Éternel, Dieu d'Israël! Il n'y a point de Dieu semblable à toi, dans les cieux et sur la terre: tu gardes l'alliance et la miséricorde envers tes serviteurs qui marchent en ta présence de tout leur coeur!
15 Ainsi tu as tenu parole à ton serviteur David, mon père; et ce que tu as déclaré de ta bouche, tu l'accomplis en ce jour par ta puissance.
16 Maintenant, Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, observe la promesse que tu as faite à David, mon père, en disant: Tu ne manqueras jamais devant moi d'un successeur assis sur le trône d'Israël, pourvu que tes fils prennent garde à leur voie et qu'ils marchent dans ma loi comme tu as marché en ma présence.
17 Qu'elle s'accomplisse donc, Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, la promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur David!
18 Mais quoi! Dieu habiterait-il véritablement avec l'homme sur la terre? Voici, les cieux et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent te contenir: combien moins cette maison que j'ai bâtie!
19 Toutefois, Éternel mon Dieu, sois attentif à la prière de ton serviteur et à sa supplication; écoute le cri et la prière que t'adresse ton serviteur.
20 Que tes yeux soient jour et nuit ouverts sur cette maison, sur le lieu dont tu as dit que là serait ton nom! Écoute la prière que ton serviteur fait en ce lieu.
21 Daigne exaucer les supplications de ton serviteur et de ton peuple d'Israël, lorsqu'ils prieront en ce lieu! Exauce du lieu de ta demeure, des cieux, exauce et pardonne!
22 Si quelqu'un pèche contre son prochain et qu'on lui impose un serment pour le faire jurer, et s'il vient jurer devant ton autel, dans cette maison,
23 écoute-le des cieux, agis, et juge tes serviteurs; condamne le coupable, et fais retomber sa conduite sur sa tête, rends justice à l'innocent, et traite-le selon son innocence!
24 Quand ton peuple d'Israël sera battu par l'ennemi, pour avoir péché contre toi; s'ils reviennent à toi et rendent gloire à ton nom, s'ils t'adressent des prières et des supplications dans cette maison,
25 exauce-les des cieux, pardonne le péché de ton peuple d'Israël, et ramène-les dans le pays que tu as donné à eux et à leurs pères!
26 Quand le ciel sera fermé et qu'il n'y aura point de pluie, à cause de leurs péchés contre toi; s'ils prient dans ce lieu et rendent gloire à ton nom, et s'ils se détournent de leurs péchés, parce que tu les auras châtiés;
27 exauce-les des cieux, pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple d'Israël, à qui tu enseigneras la bonne voie dans laquelle ils doivent marcher, et fais venir la pluie sur la terre que tu as donnée pour héritage à ton peuple!
28 Quand la famine, la peste, la rouille et la nielle, les sauterelles d'une espèce ou d'une autre, seront dans le pays, quand l'ennemi assiégera ton peuple dans son pays, dans ses portes, quand il y aura des fléaux ou des maladies quelconques;
29 si un homme, si tout ton peuple d'Israël fait entendre des prières et des supplications, et que chacun reconnaisse sa plaie et sa douleur et étende les mains vers cette maison,
30 exauce-le des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, et pardonne; rends à chacun selon ses voies, toi qui connais le coeur de chacun, car seul tu connais le coeur des enfants des hommes,
31 et ils te craindront pour marcher dans tes voies tout le temps qu'ils vivront dans le pays que tu as donné à nos pères!
32 Quand l'étranger, qui n'est pas de ton peuple d'Israël, viendra d'un pays lointain, à cause de ton grand nom, de ta main forte et de ton bras étendu, quand il viendra prier dans cette maison,
33 exauce-le des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, et accorde à cet étranger tout ce qu'il te demandera, afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent ton nom pour te craindre, comme ton peuple d'Israël, et sachent que ton nom est invoqué sur cette maison que j'ai bâtie!
34 Quand ton peuple sortira pour combattre ses ennemis, en suivant la voie que tu lui auras prescrite; s'ils t'adressent des prières, les regards tournés vers cette ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j'ai bâtie en ton nom,
35 exauce des cieux leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit!
36 Quand ils pécheront contre toi, car il n'y a point d'homme qui ne pèche, quand tu seras irrité contre eux et que tu les livreras à l'ennemi, qui les emmènera captifs dans un pays lointain ou rapproché;
37 s'ils rentrent en eux-mêmes dans le pays où ils seront captifs, s'ils reviennent à toi et t'adressent des supplications dans le pays de leur captivité, et qu'ils disent: Nous avons péché, nous avons commis des iniquités, nous avons fait le mal!
38 s'ils reviennent à toi de tout leur coeur et de toute leur âme, dans le pays de leur captivité où ils ont été emmenés captifs, s'ils t'adressent des prières, les regards tournés vers leur pays que tu as donné à leurs pères, vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j'ai bâtie à ton nom,
39 exauce des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit; pardonne à ton peuple ses péchés contre toi!
40 Maintenant, ô mon Dieu, que tes yeux soient ouverts, et que tes oreilles soient attentives à la prière faite en ce lieu!
41 Maintenant, Éternel Dieu, lève-toi, viens à ton lieu de repos, toi et l'arche de ta majesté! Que tes sacrificateurs, Éternel Dieu, soient revêtus de salut, et que tes bien-aimés jouissent du bonheur!
42 Éternel Dieu, ne repousse pas ton oint, souviens-toi des grâces accordées à David, ton serviteur!

6 Da sprach Salomo: Der HERR hat geredet, er wolle wohnen im Dunkel.
2 So habe ich nun ein Haus gebaut dir zur Wohnung, und einen Sitz, da du ewiglich wohnst.
3 Und der König wandte sein Antlitz und segnete die ganze Gemeinde Israel; denn die ganze Gemeinde Israel stand.
4 Und er sprach: Gelobt sei der HERR, der Gott Israels, der durch seinen Mund meinem Vater David geredet und es mit seiner Hand erfüllt hat, der da sagte:
5 Seit der Zeit, da ich mein Volk aus Ägyptenland geführt habe, habe ich keine Stadt erwählt in allen Stämmen Israels, ein Haus zu bauen, daß mein Name daselbst wäre, und habe auch keinen Mann erwählt, daß er Fürst wäre über mein Volk Israel;
6 aber Jerusalem habe ich erwählt, daß mein Name daselbst sei, und David habe ich erwählt, daß er über mein Volk Israel sei.
7 Und da es mein Vater im Sinn hatte, ein Haus zu bauen dem Namen des HERRN, des Gottes Israels,
8 sprach der HERR zu meinem Vater David: Du hast wohl getan, daß du im Sinn hast, meinem Namen ein Haus zu bauen.
9 Doch du sollst das Haus nicht bauen, sondern dein Sohn, der aus deinen Lenden kommen wird, soll meinem Namen das Haus bauen.
10 So hat nun der HERR sein Wort bestätigt, das er geredet hat; denn ich bin aufgekommen an meines Vaters David Statt und sitze auf dem Stuhl Israels, wie der HERR geredet hat, und habe ein Haus gebaut dem Namen des HERRN, des Gottes Israels,
11 und habe hineingetan die Lade, darin der Bund des HERRN ist, den er mit den Kindern Israel gemacht hat.
12 Und er trat vor den Altar des HERRN vor der ganzen Gemeinde Israel und breitete seine Hände aus
13 (denn Salomo hatte eine eherne Kanzel gemacht und gesetzt mitten in den Vorhof, fünf Ellen lang und breit und drei Ellen hoch; auf dieselbe trat er und fiel nieder auf seine Kniee vor der ganzen Gemeinde Israel und breitete seine Hände aus gen Himmel)
14 und sprach: HERR, Gott Israels, es ist kein Gott dir gleich, weder im Himmel noch auf Erden, der du hältst den Bund und die Barmherzigkeit deinen Knechten die vor dir wandeln aus ganzem Herzen.
15 Du hast gehalten deinem Knechte David, meinem Vater, was du ihm geredet hast; mit deinem Munde hast du es geredet, und mit deiner Hand hast du es erfüllt, wie es heutigestages steht.
16 Nun, HERR, Gott Israels, halte deinem Knechte David, meinem Vater, was du ihm verheißen hast und gesagt: Es soll dir nicht gebrechen an einem Manne vor mir, der auf dem Stuhl Israels sitze, doch sofern deine Kinder ihren Weg bewahren, daß sie wandeln in meinem Gesetz, wie du vor mir gewandelt hast.
17 Nun, HERR, Gott Israels, laß deine Worte wahr werden, das du deinem Knechte David geredet hast.
18 Denn sollte in Wahrheit Gott bei den Menschen wohnen? Siehe, der Himmel und aller Himmel Himmel können dich nicht fassen; wie sollte es denn das Haus tun, das ich gebaut habe?
19 Wende dich aber, HERR, mein Gott, zu dem Gebet deines Knechtes und zu seinem Flehen, daß du erhörest das Bitten und Beten, das dein Knecht vor dir tut;
20 daß deine Augen offen seien über dies Haus Tag und Nacht, über die Stätte, dahin du deinen Namen zu stellen verheißen hast; daß du hörest das Gebet, das dein Knecht an dieser Stelle tun wird.
21 So höre nun das Flehen deines Knechtes und deines Volkes Israel, das sie bitten werden an dieser Stätte; höre es aber von der Stätte deiner Wohnung, vom Himmel. Und wenn du es hörst, wollest du gnädig sein.
22 Wenn jemand wider seinen Nächsten sündigen wird und es wird ihm ein Eid aufgelegt, den er schwören soll, und der Eid kommt vor deinen Altar in diesem Hause:
23 so wollest du hören vom Himmel und deinem Knechte Recht verschaffen, daß du dem Gottlosen vergeltest und gibst seinen Wandel auf seinen Kopf und rechtfertigst den Gerechten und gebest ihm nach seiner Gerechtigkeit.
24 Wenn dein Volk Israel vor seinen Feinden geschlagen wird, weil an dir gesündigt haben, und sie bekehren sich und bekennen deinen Namen, bitten und flehen vor dir in diesem Hause:
25 so wollest du hören vom Himmel und gnädig sein der Sünde deines Volkes Israel und sie wieder in das Land bringen, das du ihnen und ihren Vätern gegeben hast.
26 Wenn der Himmel zugeschlossen wird, daß es nicht regnet, weil sie an dir gesündigt haben, und sie bitten an dieser Stätte und bekennen deinen Namen und bekehren sich von ihren Sünden, weil du sie gedemütigt hast:
27 so wollest du hören vom Himmel und gnädig sein der Sünde deiner Knechte und deines Volkes Israel, daß du sie den guten Weg lehrest, darin sie wandeln sollen, und regnen lassest auf dein Land, das du deinem Volk gegeben hast zu besitzen.
28 Wenn eine Teuerung im Lande wird oder Pestilenz oder Dürre, Brand, Heuschrecken, Raupen, oder wenn sein Feind im Lande seine Tore belagert oder irgend eine Plage oder Krankheit da ist;
29 wer dann bittet oder fleht, es seien allerlei Menschen oder dein ganzes Volk Israel, so jemand ein Plage und Schmerzen fühlt und seine Hände ausbreitet zu diesem Hause:
30 so wollest du hören vom Himmel, vom Sitz deiner Wohnung, und gnädig sein und jedermann geben nach all seinem Wandel, nach dem du sein Herz erkennst (denn du allein erkennst das Herz der Menschenkinder),
31 auf daß sie dich fürchten und wandeln in deinen Wegen alle Tage, solange sie leben in dem Lande, das du unsern Vätern gegeben hast.
32 Wenn auch ein Fremder, der nicht von deinem Volk Israel ist, kommt aus fernen Landen um deines großen Namens und deiner mächtigen Hand und deines ausgereckten Armes willen und betet vor diesem Hause:
33 so wollest du hören vom Himmel, vom Sitz deiner Wohnung, und tun alles, warum er dich anruft, auf daß alle Völker auf Erden deinen Namen erkennen und dich fürchten wie dein Volk Israel und innewerden, daß dies Haus, das ich gebaut habe, nach deinem Namen genannt sei.
34 Wenn dein Volk auszieht in den Streit wider seine Feinde des Weges, den du sie senden wirst, und sie zu dir beten nach dieser Stadt hin, die du erwählt hast und nach dem Hause, das ich deinem Namen gebaut habe:
35 so wollest du ihr Gebet und Flehen hören vom Himmel und ihnen zu ihrem Recht helfen.
36 Wenn sie an dir sündigen werden (denn es ist kein Mensch, der nicht sündige), und du über sie erzürnst und gibst sie dahin ihren Feinden, daß sie sie gefangen wegführen in ein fernes oder nahes Land,
37 und sie in ihr Herz schlagen in dem Lande, darin sie gefangen sind, und bekehren sich und flehen zu dir im Lande ihres Gefängnisses und sprechen: Wir haben gesündigt, übel getan und sind gottlos gewesen,
38 und sich also von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele zu dir bekehren im Lande ihres Gefängnisses, da man sie gefangen hält, und sie beten nach ihrem Lande hin, das du ihren Vätern gegeben hast, nach der Stadt hin, die du erwählt hast, und nach dem Hause, das ich deinem Namen gebaut habe:
39 so wollest du ihr Gebet und Flehen hören vom Himmel, vom Sitz deiner Wohnung, und ihnen zu ihrem Recht helfen und deinem Volk gnädig sein, das an dir gesündigt hat.
40 So laß nun, mein Gott, deine Augen offen sein und deine Ohren aufmerken auf das Gebet an dieser Stätte.
41 So mache dich nun auf, HERR, Gott zu deiner Ruhe, du und die Lade deiner Macht. Laß deine Priester, HERR, Gott, mit Heil angetan werden und deine Heiligen sich freuen über dem Guten.
42 Du, HERR, Gott, wende nicht weg das Antlitz deines Gesalbten; gedenke an die Gnaden, deinem Knechte David verheißen.

6 Then Solomon said, “The Lord said he would live in the dark cloud. 2 I have built a great Temple for you, Lord. It is a place for you to live forever.”
Solomon’s Speech
3 King Solomon turned around and blessed all the Israelites gathered in front of him. 4 He said, “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel. He has done what he promised my father David. The Lord said, 5 ‘I brought my people out of Egypt. But I have not yet chosen a city in any tribe of Israel for my temple. This is where I have chosen to be worshiped. I have not chosen a man to lead my people, the Israelites. 6 But now I have chosen Jerusalem as the place I am to be worshiped. And I have chosen David to lead my people Israel.’
7 “My father David wanted to build a temple as a place to worship the Lord, the God of Israel. 8 But the Lord said to my father, ‘David, it was good that you wanted to build a temple as a place to worship me. 9 But you are not the one who will build the temple. Your own son will build my temple.’
10 “Now the Lord has kept his promise. I have taken my father David’s place. Now I am Israel’s king. This is what the Lord promised. And I have built the Temple where the Lord, the God of Israel, will be worshiped. 11 I have put the Ark of the Covenant there. The agreement that the Lord made with the people of Israel is kept in the Ark of the Covenant.”
Solomon’s Prayer
12 Solomon stood in front of the Lord’s altar. He was standing before all the people gathered there. Then he spread his arms out. 13 He had made a bronze platform. It was 7½ feet long, 7½ feet wide and 7½ feet high. And he had placed it in the middle of the outer courtyard. Solomon stood on the platform. Then he kneeled in front of all the people of Israel who were gathered there. Solomon spread his hands out toward the sky. 14 He said, “Lord, God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven or on earth. You keep your agreement of love with your servants who completely obey you. 15 You have kept your promise to my father David, your servant. With your words you made a promise. And with the work of your hands, you have made that promise come true today.
16 “Now, Lord, God of Israel, also keep this promise you made to my father David, your servant. You said, ‘David, you will always have someone from your family rule Israel. But this will happen only if they are careful to obey my teachings in everything they do. They must obey my teachings just as you have.’ 17 Now, Lord, God of Israel, keep your promise. Let this promise to your servant David come true.
18 “But, God, can you really live here on the earth with people? Not even the highest of heavens can hold you. And this Temple I built cannot hold you. 19 But pay attention to my prayer and my cry for mercy. Lord my God, listen to my cry. Listen to the prayer I, your servant, pray to you. 20 I pray that you will watch over this Temple day and night. You said you would make this the place to worship you. I pray that you will hear my prayers when I pray facing this Temple. 21 Hear my prayers and the prayers of your people Israel. Hear us when we pray facing this Temple. Hear from your home in heaven. And when you hear our prayers, forgive us.
22 “A person might do something wrong against someone else. The person who did the wrong will have to swear he is innocent. He will come to swear this before your altar in the Temple. 23 When he does this, listen from heaven and act. Judge your servants. Punish the one who did wrong. Make him suffer the same things he made others suffer. Prove that the person who has done right is innocent.
24 “An enemy might defeat your people Israel because they have sinned against you. Then the people of Israel will return to you and say you are God. They will pray and beg you for help in this Temple. 25 When this happens, listen from heaven. Forgive the sin of your people, the Israelites. Bring them back into the land you gave to them and their ancestors.
26 “The sky might not let it rain because your people have sinned against you. Then they will pray, facing this Temple. They will say you are God. They will stop doing their sin because you are punishing them. 27 When that happens, then listen from heaven. Forgive the sins of your servants, the Israelites. Then teach them the right way to live. And send rain on your land. This is the land you gave your people as their own.
28 “There might be a time without food in the land. Or there might be terrible sicknesses, disease in the crops, mildew, locusts or grasshoppers. Or enemies might attack Israel’s cities. There might be a disaster in Israel. 29 Then one of your people, an Israelite, will pray or cry for help. Each person knows his own trouble and pain. He will spread his arms out, facing this Temple. 30 When that happens, then listen from heaven, your home. Forgive and treat each person as he should be treated. You know what is in his heart. (Only you know what is in a person’s heart.) 31 Then the people will fear and obey you as long as they live in this land. This is the land you gave our ancestors.
32 “A foreigner might come here from a country far away. He is not one of your people, the people of Israel. But he will come because he has heard about your greatness and power. He knows about the things you have done. When he comes and prays, facing this Temple, 33 then listen. Listen from heaven, your home. And do what he asks you to do. Then all the peoples of the earth will know you and respect you, just as your people Israel do. And they will know that this Temple I built is for worshiping you.
34 “You might send your people to fight their enemies. They will pray to you, facing this city you chose and the Temple I built for worshiping you. 35 If they do, then listen from heaven to their prayer. Listen to their cry and help them.
36 “People will sin against you. There is not a person who does not sin. And you will become angry with them. You will let an enemy defeat them. The enemy will capture them and take them away. It may be to a land far away or near. 37 But then they will be sorry for what they have done. As captives in that land, they will cry out to you. They will say, ‘We have sinned. We have done wrong and acted wickedly.’ 38 In the land where they are captives, they will come back to you. They will want to obey you completely. They will pray, facing their land, the land you gave their ancestors. They will pray, facing the city you chose and the Temple I built for you. 39 When this happens, listen from your home in heaven. Listen to their cries and help them. Forgive your people who have sinned against you.
40 “Now, my God, look at us. Listen to the prayers we will pray in this place.
41 Now, rise, Lord God, and come to your resting place.
Come with the Ark of the Covenant that shows your strength.
Let your priests receive your salvation, Lord God.
And may your holy people be happy because of your goodness.
42 Lord God, do not reject your appointed one.
Remember your love for your servant David.”

6 Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;(A) 2 I have built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.(B)”
3 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them. 4 Then he said:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his hands has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to my father David. For he said, 5 ‘Since the day I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, nor have I chosen anyone to be ruler over my people Israel. 6 But now I have chosen Jerusalem(C) for my Name(D) to be there, and I have chosen David(E) to rule my people Israel.’
7 “My father David had it in his heart(F) to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 8 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 9 Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’
10 “The Lord has kept the promise he made. I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 11 There I have placed the ark, in which is the covenant(G) of the Lord that he made with the people of Israel.”
Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication(H)(I)
12 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands. 13 Now he had made a bronze platform,(J) five cubits long, five cubits wide and three cubits high,[a] and had placed it in the center of the outer court. He stood on the platform and then knelt down(K) before the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven. 14 He said:
“Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you(L) in heaven or on earth—you who keep your covenant of love(M) with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. 15 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised(N) and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today.
16 “Now, Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail(O) to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me according to my law,(P) as you have done.’ 17 And now, Lord, the God of Israel, let your word that you promised your servant David come true.
18 “But will God really dwell(Q) on earth with humans? The heavens,(R) even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! 19 Yet, Lord my God, give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence. 20 May your eyes(S) be open toward this temple day and night, this place of which you said you would put your Name(T) there. May you hear(U) the prayer your servant prays toward this place. 21 Hear the supplications of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.(V)
22 “When anyone wrongs their neighbor and is required to take an oath(W) and they come and swear the oath before your altar in this temple, 23 then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, condemning(X) the guilty and bringing down on their heads what they have done, and vindicating the innocent by treating them in accordance with their innocence.
24 “When your people Israel have been defeated(Y) by an enemy because they have sinned against you and when they turn back and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication before you in this temple, 25 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to them and their ancestors.
26 “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain(Z) because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, 27 then hear from heaven and forgive(AA) the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.
28 “When famine(AB) or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when enemies besiege them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, 29 and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of their afflictions and pains, and spreading out their hands toward this temple— 30 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive,(AC) and deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know the human heart),(AD) 31 so that they will fear you(AE) and walk in obedience to you all the time they live in the land you gave our ancestors.
32 “As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come(AF) from a distant land because of your great name and your mighty hand(AG) and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, 33 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner(AH) asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.
34 “When your people go to war against their enemies,(AI) wherever you send them, and when they pray(AJ) to you toward this city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, 35 then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.
36 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin(AK)—and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive(AL) to a land far away or near; 37 and if they have a change of heart(AM) in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly’; 38 and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their captivity where they were taken, and pray toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and toward the temple I have built for your Name; 39 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive(AN) your people, who have sinned against you.
40 “Now, my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive(AO) to the prayers offered in this place.
41 “Now arise,(AP) Lord God, and come to your resting place,(AQ)
you and the ark of your might.
May your priests,(AR) Lord God, be clothed with salvation,
may your faithful people rejoice in your goodness.(AS)
42 Lord God, do not reject your anointed one.(AT)
Remember the great love(AU) promised to David your servant.”
