Alliance d’Asa avec la Syrie; reproche du prophète Hanani
16 La trente-sixième année du règne d’Asa, Baescha, roi d’Israël, monta contre Juda; et il bâtit Rama, pour empêcher ceux d’Asa, roi de Juda, de sortir et d’entrer. 2 Asa sortit de l’argent et de l’or des trésors de la maison de l’Eternel et de la maison du roi, et il envoya des messagers vers Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, qui habitait à Damas. 3 Il lui fit dire: Qu’il y ait une alliance entre moi et toi, comme il y en eut une entre mon père et ton père. Voici, je t’envoie de l’argent et de l’or. Va, romps ton alliance avec Baescha, roi d’Israël, afin qu’il s’éloigne de moi. 4 Ben-Hadad écouta le roi Asa; il envoya les chefs de son armée contre les villes d’Israël, et ils frappèrent Ijjon, Dan, Abel-Maïm, et tous les magasins des villes de Nephthali. 5 Lorsque Baescha l’apprit, il cessa de bâtir Rama et interrompit ses travaux. 6 Le roi Asa occupa tout Juda à emporter les pierres et le bois que Baescha employait à la construction de Rama, et il s’en servit pour bâtir Guéba et Mitspa.
7 Dans ce temps-là, Hanani, le voyant, alla auprès d’Asa, roi de Juda, et lui dit: Parce que tu t’es appuyé sur le roi de Syrie et que tu ne t’es pas appuyé sur l’Eternel, ton Dieu, l’armée du roi de Syrie s’est échappée de tes mains. 8 Les Ethiopiens et les Libyens ne formaient-ils pas une grande armée, avec des chars et une multitude de cavaliers? Et cependant l’Eternel les a livrés entre tes mains, parce que tu t’étais appuyé sur lui. 9 Car l’Eternel étend ses regards sur toute la terre, pour soutenir ceux dont le cœur est tout entier à lui. Tu as agi en insensé dans cette affaire, car dès à présent tu auras des guerres.
10 Asa fut irrité contre le voyant, et il le fit mettre en prison, parce qu’il était en colère contre lui. Et dans le même temps Asa opprima aussi quelques-uns du peuple.
11 Les actions d’Asa, les premières et les dernières, sont écrites dans le livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël. 12 La trente-neuvième année de son règne, Asa eut les pieds malades au point d’éprouver de grandes souffrances; même pendant sa maladie, il ne chercha pas l’Eternel, mais il consulta les médecins.
13 Asa se coucha avec ses pères, et il mourut la quarante et unième année de son règne; 14 on l’enterra dans le sépulcre qu’il s’était creusé dans la ville de David. On le coucha sur un lit qu’on avait garni d’aromates et de parfums préparés selon l’art du parfumeur, et l’on en brûla en son honneur une quantité très considérable.

Asa’s Last Years(A)(B)
16 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign Baasha(C) king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
2 Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.(D) 3 “Let there be a treaty(E) between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”
4 Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim[a] and all the store cities of Naphtali.(F) 5 When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work. 6 Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.(G)
7 At that time Hanani(H) the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied(I) on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8 Were not the Cushites[b](J) and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers(K) of chariots and horsemen[c]? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered(L) them into your hand. 9 For the eyes(M) of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish(N) thing, and from now on you will be at war.(O)”
10 Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison.(P) At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.
11 The events of Asa’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted(Q) with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek(R) help from the Lord,(S) but only from the physicians. 13 Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his ancestors. 14 They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself(T) in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes,(U) and they made a huge fire(V) in his honor.

Asa’s Last Years(A)
16 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s ·rule [reign], Baasha king of Israel ·attacked [invaded] Judah. He ·made the town of Ramah strong [fortified Ramah] so he could keep people from leaving or entering Judah, Asa’s ·country [territory].
2 Asa took silver and gold from the treasuries of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord and out of his own ·palace [L house]. Then he sent it with ·messengers [this message] to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who lived in Damascus. Asa said, 3 “Let there be a ·treaty [alliance] between you and me as there was between my father and your father. I am sending you silver and gold. Break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will ·leave [withdraw from] my land.”
4 Ben-Hadad ·agreed with [L listened to] King Asa and sent the ·commanders [officers] of his armies ·to attack [against] the towns of Israel. They ·defeated the towns of [conquered] Ijon, Dan, and Abel Beth Maacah, and all the ·towns in Naphtali where treasures were stored [storage/supply cities of Naphtali]. 5 When Baasha heard about this, he stopped ·building up [fortifying] Ramah and ·left [abandoned; ceased] his work. 6 Then King Asa brought all the people of Judah to Ramah, and they carried away the ·rocks [stones] and ·wood [timber] that Baasha had used. And they used them to ·build up [fortify] Geba and Mizpah.
7 At that time Hanani the ·seer [prophet] came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, “You ·depended on [trusted; relied on] the king of Aram to help you and not on the Lord your God. So the king of Aram’s army escaped from you. 8 ·The Cushites and Libyans had [L Did not the Ethiopians and Lubim have…?] a large and powerful army and many chariots and horsemen. But you ·depended on [trusted; relied on] the Lord to help you, so he handed them over to you. 9 ·The Lord searches [L The eyes of the Lord search] ·all [throughout] the earth for people ·who have given themselves completely to him [whose hearts are completely his/committed to him]. He wants to strengthen them. Asa, you did a foolish thing, so from now on you will have wars.”
10 Asa was angry with Hanani the ·seer [prophet] because of what he had said; he was so ·angry [enraged] that he put Hanani in prison. And Asa ·was cruel to [oppressed] some of the people at the same time.
11 ·Everything Asa did as king [The events/acts/history of Asa’s reign], from ·the beginning to the end [first to last], is written in the ·book [scroll] of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12 In the thirty-ninth year of his ·rule [reign], Asa got a disease in his feet. Though his disease was very bad, he did not ·ask for help from [seek] the Lord, but only ·from the doctors [the physicians]. 13 Then Asa was buried [L lay down; T rested] with his ·ancestors [fathers], having died in the forty-first year of his ·rule [reign]. 14 The people buried Asa in the tomb he had ·made [L carved out] for himself in Jerusalem. They laid him on a ·bed filled [bier covered] with spices and ·different kinds of [assorted] mixed perfumes, and they made a large funeral fire to honor him.
