The Queen of Sheba

9 The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s fame,(A) so she came to test Solomon with difficult questions at Jerusalem with a very large entourage, with camels bearing spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. She came to Solomon and spoke with him about everything that was on her mind. 2 So Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too difficult for Solomon to explain to her. 3 When the queen of Sheba observed Solomon’s wisdom, the palace he had built, 4 the food at his table, his servants’ residence, his attendants’ service and their attire, his cupbearers and their attire, and the burnt offerings he offered at the Lord’s temple, it took her breath away.

5 She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and about your wisdom is true. 6 But I didn’t believe their reports until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, I was not even told half of your great wisdom! You far exceed the report I heard. 7 How happy are your men.[a](B) How happy are these servants of yours, who always stand in your presence hearing your wisdom. 8 Blessed be the Lord your God! He delighted in you and put you on his throne as king for the Lord your God.(C) Because your God loved Israel enough to establish them forever, he has set you over them as king to carry out justice and righteousness.”(D)

9 Then she gave the king four and a half tons[b] of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There never were such spices as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. 10 In addition, Hiram’s servants and Solomon’s servants who brought gold from Ophir(E) also brought algum wood and precious stones. 11 The king made the algum wood into walkways for the Lord’s temple and for the king’s palace and into lyres and harps for the singers. Never before had anything like them been seen in the land of Judah.

12 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba her every desire, whatever she asked—far more than she had brought the king. Then she, along with her servants, returned to her own country.

Solomon’s Wealth

13 The weight of gold that came to Solomon(F) annually was twenty-five tons,[c] 14 besides what was brought by the merchants and traders. All the Arabian kings and governors of the land also brought gold and silver to Solomon.

15 King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; 15 pounds[d] of hammered gold went into each shield. 16 He made three hundred small shields of hammered gold; 7½ pounds[e] of gold went into each shield. The king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.(G)

17 The king also made a large ivory throne and overlaid it with pure gold. 18 The throne had six steps; there was a footstool covered in gold for the throne, armrests on either side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the armrests. 19 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps, one at each end. Nothing like it had ever been made in any other kingdom.

20 All of King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver, since it was considered as nothing in Solomon’s time, 21 for the king’s ships kept going to Tarshish(H) with Hiram’s servants, and once every three years the ships of Tarshish would arrive bearing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.[f]

22 King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the world in riches and wisdom.(I) 23 All the kings of the world wanted an audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart. 24 Each of them would bring his own gift—items[g] of silver and gold, clothing, weapons,[h][i] spices, and horses and mules—as an annual tribute.

25 Solomon(J) had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.(K) He stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 26 He ruled over all the kings from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and as far as the border of Egypt.(L) 27 The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar as abundant as sycamore in the Judean foothills. 28 They were bringing horses for Solomon from Egypt and from all the countries.

Solomon’s Death

29 The remaining events(M) of Solomon’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the Events of the Prophet Nathan, the Prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and the Visions of the Seer Iddo concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat.(N) 30 Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years. 31 Solomon rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of his father David.(O) His son Rehoboam became king in his place.

5 Она сказала царю:

– Молва, которую я слышала в своей стране о твоих делах и мудрости, правдива, 6 но я не верила слухам, пока не пришла и не увидела это своими глазами. И что же, мне не рассказали и о половине твоей мудрости! Ты далеко превзошёл ту молву, что я слышала. 7 Благословенны твои люди! Благословенны твои приближённые, которые всегда стоят перед тобой и внимают твоей мудрости! 8 Хвала Вечному, твоему Богу, Который благоволил к тебе, посадив тебя царём на Своём престоле, чтобы ты правил для Вечного, твоего Бога! Ради любви твоего Бога к Исроилу, ради желания утвердить его навеки, Он сделал тебя его царём, чтобы ты поступал справедливо и праведно.

9 Она подарила царю четыре тысячи триста двадцать килограммов[b] золота, великое множество пряностей и драгоценных камней. Никогда больше не было благовоний, подобных тем, что царица Шевы подарила царю Сулаймону.

10 (А люди Хирама и люди Сулаймона привозили золото из Офира. Ещё они привезли красное дерево и драгоценные камни. 11 Царь сделал из красного дерева лестницы для храма Вечного и для царского дворца, а также арфы и лиры для музыкантов. Прежде в Иудее не видели ничего подобного.)

12 Царь Сулаймон подарил царице Шевы всё, что она пожелала, и о чём просила. Он подарил ей больше, чем она привезла ему. После этого она вернулась со свитой в свою страну.

Богатство и великолепие Сулаймона(B)

13 Ежегодно Сулаймон получал почти двадцать четыре тонны[c] золота, 14 не считая того дохода, что поступал от купцов и торговцев. Все цари Аравии и наместники страны тоже привозили Сулаймону золото и серебро.

15 Царь Сулаймон сделал двести больших щитов из кованого золота, на каждый из которых пошло по три с половиной килограмма[d] золота. 16 Ещё он сделал триста маленьких щитов из кованого золота, на каждый из которых ушло почти по два килограмма[e] золота. Царь поместил их во дворце, называемом дворцом Ливанского леса.

17 Ещё царь сделал огромный трон, выложенный слоновой костью и покрытый чистым золотом. 18 У трона было шесть ступенек, и к нему было прикреплено золотое подножие. По обеим сторонам сиденья были подлокотники, и у каждого из них стояло по льву. 19 Двенадцать львов стояло на шести ступеньках – по одному с каждой стороны каждой ступеньки. Никогда ничего подобного не делалось ни в каком другом царстве.

20 Все чаши царя Сулаймона были золотыми, и вся домашняя утварь во дворце Ливанского леса была из чистого золота. Серебряного ничего не было, потому что серебро в дни Сулаймона не ценилось.

21 На море у царя был флот из торговых кораблей[f] с командой из слуг Хирама. Раз в три года корабли возвращались, привозя золото, серебро, слоновую кость, обезьян и павлинов.

22 Царь Сулаймон превосходил богатством и мудростью всех царей земли. 23 Все они искали встречи с Сулаймоном, чтобы послушать мудрости, которую вложил в его сердце Всевышний. 24 Всякий приходящий приносил дары – изделия из серебра и золота, одежды, оружие и пряности, лошадей и мулов, и так – из года в год.

29 Прочие события царствования Сулаймона, от первых до последних, описаны в «Записях пророка Нафана», в «Пророчестве Ахии из Шило» и в «Видениях провидца Иддо о Иеровоаме, сыне Невата». 30 Сулаймон правил в Иерусалиме всем Исроилом сорок лет. 31 Потом он упокоился со своими предками и был похоронен в Городе Довуда, своего отца. Queen of Sheba

9 When the queen of Sheba heard reports about Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with riddles. Accompanying her was a huge entourage, with camels carrying spices, large amounts of gold, and precious stones. After she arrived, she told Solomon everything that was on her mind. 2 Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too difficult for him to answer. 3 When the queen of Sheba saw how wise Solomon was, the palace he had built, 4 the food on his table, his servants’ quarters, the function and dress of his attendants, his cupbearers and their dress, and the entirely burned offerings he offered at the Lord’s temple,[a] it took her breath away.

5 “The report I heard about your deeds and wisdom when I was still at home is true,” she said to the king. 6 “I didn’t believe it until I came and saw it with my own eyes. In fact, the half of it wasn’t told to me! You have far more than I was told. 7 Your people and these servants who continually serve you and get to listen to your wisdom are truly happy! 8 Bless the Lord your God because he was pleased to put you on the throne as king for the Lord your God. Because your God loved Israel and wanted to establish them forever, he has made you their king to uphold justice and righteousness.”

9 Then she gave the king one hundred twenty kikkars of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. Never again has such a quantity of spice come to Israel as when the queen of Sheba gave this gift to King Solomon.

10 In addition, Huram’s servants and the servants of Solomon, who had brought gold back from Ophir, also brought algum wood and precious stones. 11 The king made steps[b] for the Lord’s temple and for the royal palace with the algum wood, as well as lyres and harps for the musicians. Never before had anything like them been seen in the land of Judah. 12 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba everything she wanted, even more than she had brought the king. Then she and her servants returned to her homeland.

Solomon’s wealth

13 Solomon received an annual income of six hundred sixty-six kikkars of gold, 14 not including income from the traders and merchants. All the Arabian kings and the governors of the land also brought Solomon gold and silver. 15 King Solomon made two hundred body-sized shields of hammered gold, using fifteen pounds[c] of hammered gold in each shield; 16 and three hundred small shields of hammered gold, using seven and a half pounds[d] of hammered gold in each shield. The king placed these in the Forest of Lebanon Palace.

17 The king also made a large ivory throne and covered it with pure gold. 18 Six steps led up to the throne, which had a gold footrest attached. Two lions stood beside the armrests on both sides of the throne. 19 Another twelve lions stood on both sides of the six steps. No other kingdom had anything like this.

20 All King Solomon’s drinking cups were made of gold, and all the items in the Forest of Lebanon Palace were made of pure gold, not silver, since even silver wasn’t considered good enough in Solomon’s time! 21 The royal fleet sailed to Tarshish with the servants of Huram, returning once every three years with gold, silver, ivory, monkeys, and peacocks.[e]

22 King Solomon far exceeded all the earth’s kings in wealth and wisdom, 23 and kings of every nation wanted an audience with Solomon in order to hear his God-given wisdom. 24 Year after year they came with tribute: objects of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules.

25 Solomon also had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, together with twelve thousand horsemen that he kept in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 26 He ruled all the kings from the Euphrates[f] to the Philistines’ land and the border of Egypt. 27 In Jerusalem, the king made silver as common as stones and cedar as common as sycamore trees that grow in the foothills. 28 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and every land.

Solomon’s remaining days

29 The rest of Solomon’s deeds, from beginning to end, aren’t they written in the records of the prophet Nathan, the prophecies of Ahijah from Shiloh, and the visions of the seer Iddo concerning Jeroboam, Nebat’s son? 30 Solomon ruled over all Israel in Jerusalem for forty years. 31 Solomon lay down with his ancestors and was buried in David’s City with his father. His son Rehoboam succeeded him as king.
