Manasseh Reigns over Judah
33 (A)Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. 2 (B)And he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, according to the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh dispossessed before the sons of Israel. 3 Indeed, (C)he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had torn down; and (D)he erected altars for the Baals and made [a]Asherim, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them. 4 (E)And he built altars in the house of Yahweh, of which Yahweh had said, “(F)In Jerusalem My name shall be forever.” 5 Indeed, he built altars for all the host of heaven in (G)the two courts of the house of Yahweh. 6 (H)He even made his sons pass through the fire in the valley of Ben-hinnom; and he practiced soothsaying, interpreted omens, practiced sorcery, and (I)dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much that was evil in the sight of Yahweh, provoking Him to anger. 7 Then he put (J)the graven image of the [b]idol, which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, “(K)In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever. 8 And I will not again remove the foot of Israel from the land (L)which I have set up for your fathers, if only they will be careful to do all that I have commanded them according to all the law, the statutes and the judgments given by the hand of Moses.” 9 Thus Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem astray in order to do more evil than the nations whom Yahweh destroyed before the sons of Israel.
Manasseh Removes Foreign Idols
10 Then Yahweh spoke to Manasseh and his people, but (M)they paid no attention. 11 (N)Therefore Yahweh brought the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria against them, and they captured Manasseh with [c]hooks, (O)bound him with bronze chains, and took him to Babylon. 12 And when (P)he was in distress, he entreated Yahweh his God and (Q)humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. 13 Then he prayed to Him, and (R)He was moved by his entreaty and heard his supplication, and returned him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. Then Manasseh (S)knew that Yahweh was God.
14 Afterwards, he built the outer wall of the city of David on the west side of (T)Gihon, in the valley, even to the entrance of the (U)Fish Gate; and he encircled the (V)Ophel with it and made it very high. Then he put military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah. 15 He also (W)removed the foreign gods and the [d]idol from the house of Yahweh, as well as all the altars which he had built on the mountain of the house of Yahweh and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city. 16 And he set up the altar of Yahweh and sacrificed (X)peace offerings and thank offerings on it; and he said for Judah to serve Yahweh, the God of Israel. 17 Nevertheless (Y)the people still sacrificed in the high places, although only to Yahweh their God.
18 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, even (Z)his prayer to his God, and the words of (AA)the seers who spoke to him in the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel, behold, they are among the chronicles of the kings of (AB)Israel. 19 His prayer also and (AC)how God was entreated by him, and all his sin, his unfaithfulness, and (AD)the sites on which he built high places and erected the [e]Asherim and the graven images, before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the chronicles of the [f]Hozai. 20 And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house. And Amon his son became king in his place.
Amon Reigns over Judah
21 (AE)Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. 22 And he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, as Manasseh his father (AF)had done, and Amon sacrificed to all (AG)the graven images which his father Manasseh had made, and he served them. 23 Moreover, he did not humble himself before Yahweh (AH)as his father Manasseh had humbled himself, but Amon multiplied guilt. 24 Then (AI)his servants conspired against him and put him to death in his own house. 25 Then the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon, and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.

Manasseh King of Judah(A)(B)
33 Manasseh(C) was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(D) following the detestable(E) practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 3 He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had demolished; he also erected altars to the Baals and made Asherah poles.(F) He bowed down(G) to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. 4 He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “My Name(H) will remain in Jerusalem forever.” 5 In both courts of the temple of the Lord,(I) he built altars to all the starry hosts. 6 He sacrificed his children(J) in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens, and consulted mediums(K) and spiritists.(L) He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.
7 He took the image he had made and put it in God’s temple,(M) of which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever. 8 I will not again make the feet of the Israelites leave the land(N) I assigned to your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them concerning all the laws, decrees and regulations given through Moses.” 9 But Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.(O)
10 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention. 11 So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner,(P) put a hook(Q) in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles(R) and took him to Babylon. 12 In his distress he sought the favor of the Lord his God and humbled(S) himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. 13 And when he prayed to him, the Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.
14 Afterward he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David, west of the Gihon(T) spring in the valley, as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate(U) and encircling the hill of Ophel;(V) he also made it much higher. He stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities in Judah.
15 He got rid of the foreign gods and removed(W) the image from the temple of the Lord, as well as all the altars he had built on the temple hill and in Jerusalem; and he threw them out of the city. 16 Then he restored the altar of the Lord and sacrificed fellowship offerings and thank offerings(X) on it, and told Judah to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. 17 The people, however, continued to sacrifice at the high places, but only to the Lord their God.
18 The other events of Manasseh’s reign, including his prayer to his God and the words the seers spoke to him in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, are written in the annals of the kings of Israel.[a] 19 His prayer and how God was moved by his entreaty, as well as all his sins and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled(Y) himself—all these are written in the records of the seers.[b](Z) 20 Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried(AA) in his palace. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.
Amon King of Judah(AB)
21 Amon(AC) was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. 22 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon worshiped and offered sacrifices to all the idols Manasseh had made. 23 But unlike his father Manasseh, he did not humble(AD) himself before the Lord; Amon increased his guilt.
24 Amon’s officials conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace. 25 Then the people(AE) of the land killed all who had plotted against King Amon, and they made Josiah his son king in his place.

Manasseh King of Judah(A)
33 Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he ·was king [reigned] for fifty-five years in Jerusalem. 2 He did ·what the Lord said was wrong [L evil in the Lord’s sight/eyes]. He did the ·hateful [detestable; abominable] things the nations had done—the nations that the Lord had ·forced [driven] out of the land ahead of the Israelites. 3 Manasseh’s father, Hezekiah, had torn down ·places where gods were worshiped [L the high places; 11:15], but Manasseh rebuilt them. He also built altars for the Baal gods, and he made Asherah ·idols [poles; 14:3] and worshiped all the ·stars of the sky [powers/hosts of heaven] and ·served [worshiped] them. 4 The Lord had said about the ·Temple [L house], “·I will be worshiped [L My name will be] in Jerusalem forever,” but Manasseh built altars in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. 5 He built altars to worship the ·stars [L powers/hosts of heaven] in the two courtyards of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. 6 He ·made his children pass through [sacrificed his children in the] fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. He practiced magic and witchcraft and ·told the future by explaining signs and dreams [divination; augery]. He ·got advice from [dealt with] mediums and ·fortune-tellers [spiritualists; spiritists; Deut. 18:9–13]. He did ·many things the Lord said were wrong [L much evil in the Lord’s sight/eyes], which made the Lord angry.
7 Manasseh carved an idol and put it in the ·Temple [L house] of God. God had said to David and his son Solomon about the ·Temple [L house], “I will ·be worshiped [L put my name] forever in this ·Temple [L house] and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel. 8 I will never again make the ·Israelites [L feet of Israel] ·leave [wander from; C into exile] the land I ·gave to [appointed for] their ·ancestors [fathers]. But they must ·obey [be careful to do] everything I have commanded them in all the ·teachings [instructions; laws], ·rules [statutes; ordinances; requirements], and ·commands [judgments] I gave them through Moses.” 9 But Manasseh led the people of Judah and Jerusalem ·to do wrong [astray]. They did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed ahead of the Israelites.
10 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they ·did not listen [paid no attention]. 11 So the Lord brought the king of Assyria’s army commanders to attack Judah. They captured Manasseh, put hooks in him [C in his nose], ·placed bronze chains on his hands [bound him with bronze chains], and took him to Babylon. 12 ·As Manasseh suffered [L When he was in distress], he ·begged [entreated; L sought] the Lord his God for help and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ·ancestors [fathers]. 13 When Manasseh prayed, the Lord heard ·him [L his plea] and ·had pity on him [was moved]. So the Lord ·let him return [brought him back] to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is the true God.
14 After that happened, Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David [C Jerusalem] and made it higher. It was in the valley on the west side of the Gihon spring and went to the entrance of the Fish Gate and around the hill of Ophel. Then he ·put [stationed] ·commanders [officers] in all the ·strong, walled [fortified] cities in Judah.
15 Manasseh removed the ·idols of other nations [foreign gods], including the idol in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. He removed all the altars he had built on the hill of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord and in Jerusalem and threw them out of the city. 16 Then he ·set up [restored] the Lord’s altar and ·sacrificed [offered] on it ·fellowship [or peace; well-being] offerings [Lev. 3:1] and ·offerings to show thanks to God [thank/thanksgiving offerings]. Manasseh commanded all the people of Judah to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. 17 The people continued to offer sacrifices at the ·places of worship [L high places], but their sacrifices were only to the Lord their God. 18 The ·other things Manasseh did as king [rest of the events/acts/history of Manasseh], his prayer to his God, and what the ·seers [prophets] said to him in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel—all are recorded in the ·book [scroll] of the ·history [annals; records] of the kings of Israel. 19 Manasseh’s prayer and ·God’s pity for him [how God responded to his plea/entreaty], his sins, his unfaithfulness, the ·places [sites on which] he built ·for worshiping gods [L high places; 11:15] and the Asherah ·idols [poles; 14:3] before he humbled himself—all are written in the ·book [scroll] of the ·seers [prophets]. 20 Manasseh ·died [L lay down/T slept with his fathers/ancestors] and was buried in his ·palace [L house]. Amon King of Judah(B)
21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he ·was king [reigned] for two years in Jerusalem. 22 He did ·what the Lord said was wrong [L evil in the Lord’s sight/eyes], as his father Manasseh had done. Amon ·worshiped [served] and ·offered [sacrificed] sacrifices to all the carved ·idols [images] Manasseh had made. 23 Amon did not humble himself before the Lord as his father Manasseh had done. Instead, Amon ·sinned even more [L multiplied guilt].
24 King Amon’s ·officers [officials; servants] ·made plans [conspired; plotted] against him and killed him in his ·palace [L house]. 25 Then the people of the land ·killed [executed] all those who had ·made plans [conspired; plotted] to kill King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king in his place.

33 Manasse was twaalf jaar toen hij koning werd. Hij regeerde 55 jaar in Jeruzalem. 2 Hij leefde niet zoals de Heer het wil. Hij deed dezelfde vreselijke dingen als de volken die de Heer voor de Israëlieten uit het land had weggejaagd. 3 Hij bouwde de altaren weer op die zijn vader Hizkia had afgebroken. Hij bouwde weer altaren voor Baäl, zette heilige palen neer en aanbad de zon, de maan en de sterren. 4 Ook bouwde hij altaren in de tempel van de Heer, de plaats waarvan de Heer gezegd had dat Hij er voor eeuwig wilde wonen. 5 Hij bouwde altaren voor de zon, de maan en de sterren op de twee pleinen van de tempel van de Heer. 6 Hij offerde zelfs in het Ben-Hinnomdal zijn zonen als brand-offer. Hij hield zich bezig met toekomstvoorspellen, waarzeggerij en toverij. Hij ging naar waarzeggers en naar mensen die voor hem de geesten om raad moesten vragen. Hij deed heel veel dingen die de Heer had verboden. Daarmee maakte hij Hem kwaad. 7 Hij liet ook een stenen godenbeeld maken en zette dat neer in de tempel van God, ook al had God tegen David en tegen Davids zoon Salomo gezegd: 'In deze tempel wil Ik voor eeuwig wonen, hier in de stad Jeruzalem die Ik in heel Israël heb uitgekozen. 8 Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat Israël voor altijd zal wonen in het land dat Ik aan hun voorouders heb gegeven. Maar dat zal Ik alleen doen, als zij zich altijd aan mijn wetten en leefregels houden. Ze moeten zich aan de hele wet houden die Ik aan mijn dienaar Mozes heb gegeven.'
9 Het was de schuld van koning Manasse dat Juda en de bewoners van Jeruzalem ergere dingen gingen doen dan de volken die de Heer voor de Israëlieten had vernietigd. 10 De Heer waarschuwde Manasse en zijn volk, maar ze wilden niet luisteren. 11 Daarom strafte de Heer hen. Hij zorgde ervoor dat de legeraanvoerders van de koning van Assur Manasse gevangen namen. Ze boeiden hem met twee koperen ketenen. Aan haken namen ze hem mee naar Babel. 12 Toen hij er zo ellendig aan toe was, ging hij weer bidden tot zijn Heer God. Hij had erge spijt van wat hij gedaan had. 13 Daarom luisterde God naar hem en liet hem naar Jeruzalem terugkomen. Hij zorgde ervoor dat hij weer koning van Juda werd. En Manasse gaf toe dat de Heer God is.
14 Hierna bouwde hij een buitenmuur rond de 'Stad van David'. De muur liep vanaf de westkant van de Gihon, door het dal in de richting van de Vispoort en dan rond de heuvel Ofel. Hij maakte de muur flink hoog. Ook plaatste hij legeraanvoerders in de steden met muren in Juda. 15 Hij haalde de godenbeelden en het beeld van Baäl weg uit de tempel van de Heer. Hij brak alle altaren af die hij op de berg van de tempel van de Heer en in Jeruzalem had gebouwd. De stenen gooide hij buiten de stad neer. 16 Hij herbouwde het altaar van de Heer en bracht daar weer offers. Hij beval Juda om de Heer, de God van Israël, weer te dienen. 17 Toch bleven de mensen nog offeren op de altaren buiten Jeruzalem, maar nu alleen aan hun Heer God.
18 De rest van wat Manasse allemaal heeft gedaan,[a] zijn gebed tot zijn God en de woorden waarmee de profeten hem namens God waarschuwden, zijn opgeschreven in de boeken met de geschiedenis van de koningen van Juda en Israël. 19 Zijn gebed, het antwoord van de Heer, alles wat hij verkeerd gedaan heeft tegen de Heer, de plaatsen waar hij altaren, heilige palen en godenbeelden heeft neergezet voordat hij spijt kreeg, staan allemaal in de boeken van de profeten. 20 Manasse stierf en werd in zijn paleis begraven. Zijn zoon Amon werd na hem koning van Juda.
Amon, koning van Juda
21 Amon was 22 jaar toen hij koning werd. Hij regeerde twee jaar in Jeruzalem. 22 Hij leefde niet zoals de Heer het wil, net als zijn vader Manasse. Amon aanbad de goden die zijn vader Manasse had gemaakt en bracht er offers aan. 23 Maar hij kreeg er geen spijt van, zoals zijn vader Manasse. Amons schuld tegenover de Heer werd steeds groter.
24 Op een keer smeedden zijn dienaren een samenzwering tegen hem en doodden hem in zijn paleis.[b] 25 Maar het volk doodde daarna alle mannen die aan de samenzwering hadden meegedaan. Daarna kroonden ze Amons zoon Josia tot koning van Juda.
