New International Version

Ahaz King of Judah(A)

28 Ahaz(B) was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord. 2 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and also made idols(C) for worshiping the Baals. 3 He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(D) and sacrificed his children(E) in the fire, engaging in the detestable(F) practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.

5 Therefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram.(G) The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus.

He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him. 6 In one day Pekah(H) son of Remaliah killed a hundred and twenty thousand soldiers in Judah(I)—because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 7 Zikri, an Ephraimite warrior, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the officer in charge of the palace, and Elkanah, second to the king. 8 The men of Israel took captive from their fellow Israelites who were from Judah(J) two hundred thousand wives, sons and daughters. They also took a great deal of plunder, which they carried back to Samaria.(K)

9 But a prophet of the Lord named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army when it returned to Samaria. He said to them, “Because the Lord, the God of your ancestors, was angry(L) with Judah, he gave them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches to heaven.(M) 10 And now you intend to make the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem your slaves.(N) But aren’t you also guilty of sins against the Lord your God? 11 Now listen to me! Send back your fellow Israelites you have taken as prisoners, for the Lord’s fierce anger rests on you.(O)”

12 Then some of the leaders in Ephraim—Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berekiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai—confronted those who were arriving from the war. 13 “You must not bring those prisoners here,” they said, “or we will be guilty before the Lord. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel.”

14 So the soldiers gave up the prisoners and plunder in the presence of the officials and all the assembly. 15 The men designated by name took the prisoners, and from the plunder they clothed all who were naked. They provided them with clothes and sandals, food and drink,(P) and healing balm. All those who were weak they put on donkeys. So they took them back to their fellow Israelites at Jericho, the City of Palms,(Q) and returned to Samaria.(R)

16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the kings[a] of Assyria(S) for help. 17 The Edomites(T) had again come and attacked Judah and carried away prisoners,(U) 18 while the Philistines(V) had raided towns in the foothills and in the Negev of Judah. They captured and occupied Beth Shemesh, Aijalon(W) and Gederoth,(X) as well as Soko,(Y) Timnah(Z) and Gimzo, with their surrounding villages. 19 The Lord had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel,[b] for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful(AA) to the Lord. 20 Tiglath-Pileser[c](AB) king of Assyria(AC) came to him, but he gave him trouble(AD) instead of help.(AE) 21 Ahaz(AF) took some of the things from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace and from the officials and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.(AG)

22 In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful(AH) to the Lord. 23 He offered sacrifices to the gods(AI) of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, “Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me.”(AJ) But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.(AK)

24 Ahaz gathered together the furnishings(AL) from the temple of God(AM) and cut them in pieces. He shut the doors(AN) of the Lord’s temple and set up altars(AO) at every street corner in Jerusalem. 25 In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of his ancestors.

26 The other events of his reign and all his ways, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 Ahaz rested(AP) with his ancestors and was buried(AQ) in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.

28 Ahaz (B)was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord, as his father David had done. 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made (C)molded images for (D)the Baals. 3 He burned incense in (E)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and burned (F)his children in the (G)fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had (H)cast out before the children of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the [a]high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

Syria and Israel Defeat Judah(I)

5 Therefore (J)the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria. They (K)defeated him, and carried away a great multitude of them as captives, and brought them to Damascus. Then he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who defeated him with a great slaughter. 6 For (L)Pekah the son of Remaliah killed one hundred and twenty thousand in Judah in one day, all valiant men, (M)because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. 7 Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the officer over the house, and Elkanah who was second to the king. 8 And the children of Israel carried away captive of their (N)brethren two hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters; and they also took away much [b]spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria.

Israel Returns the Captives

9 But a (O)prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out before the army that came to Samaria, and said to them: “Look, (P)because the Lord God of your fathers was angry with Judah, He has delivered them into your hand; but you have killed them in a rage that (Q)reaches up to heaven. 10 And now you propose to force the children of Judah and Jerusalem to be your (R)male and female slaves; but are you not also guilty before the Lord your God? 11 Now hear me, therefore, and return the captives, whom you have taken captive from your brethren, (S)for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.”

12 Then some of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war, 13 and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives here, for we already have offended the Lord. You intend to add to our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” 14 So the armed men left the captives and the [c]spoil before the leaders and all the assembly. 15 Then the men (T)who were designated by name rose up and took the captives, and from the [d]spoil they clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them and gave them sandals, (U)gave them food and drink, and anointed them; and they let all the feeble ones ride on donkeys. So they brought them to their brethren at Jericho, (V)the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria.

Assyria Refuses to Help Judah(W)

16 (X)At the same time King Ahaz sent to the [e]kings of Assyria to help him. 17 For again the (Y)Edomites had come, attacked Judah, and carried away captives. 18 (Z)The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland and of the South of Judah, and had taken Beth Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Sochoh with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages; and they dwelt there. 19 For the Lord [f]brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of (AA)Israel, for he had (AB)encouraged moral decline in Judah and had been continually unfaithful to the Lord. 20 Also (AC)Tiglath-Pileser[g] king of Assyria came to him and distressed him, and did not assist him. 21 For Ahaz took part of the treasures from the house of the Lord, from the house of the king, and from the leaders, and he gave it to the king of Assyria; but he did not help him.

Apostasy and Death of Ahaz(AD)

22 Now in the time of his distress King Ahaz became increasingly unfaithful to the Lord. This is that King Ahaz. 23 For (AE)he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him, saying, “Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, I will sacrifice to them (AF)that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 So Ahaz gathered the articles of the house of God, cut in pieces the articles of the house of God, (AG)shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and made for himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 And in every single city of Judah he made [h]high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.

26 (AH)Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 So Ahaz [i]rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem; but they (AI)did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. Then Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.

28 (A)Acaz tenía veinte años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó dieciséis años en Jerusalén; pero no hizo lo recto ante los ojos del Señor(B) como su padre David había hecho, 2 sino que anduvo en los caminos(C) de los reyes de Israel; también hizo imágenes fundidas(D) para los baales. 3 Quemó además incienso en el valle de Ben-hinom(E), e hizo pasar a sus hijos por fuego(F), conforme a las abominaciones de las naciones que el Señor había arrojado[a] de delante de los hijos de Israel(G). 4 Y sacrificó y quemó incienso en los lugares altos(H), en los montes y debajo de todo árbol frondoso.

5 Por lo cual el Señor su Dios lo entregó en manos del rey de los arameos(I), que lo derrotaron[b], tomaron de él gran número de cautivos y los llevaron a Damasco. Y también él fue entregado en manos del rey de Israel, el cual lo hirió con gran mortandad[c]. 6 Porque Peka, hijo de Remalías(J), mató en Judá a ciento veinte mil en un día, todos hombres valientes, porque habían abandonado al Señor, Dios de sus padres. 7 Y Zicri, hombre poderoso de Efraín, mató a Maasías, hijo del rey, y a Azricam, mayordomo de la casa, y a Elcana, segundo después del rey.

8 Y los hijos de Israel se llevaron cautivos de sus hermanos(K) a doscientos mil, mujeres, hijos e hijas(L); y tomaron[d] también mucho botín de ellos y se llevaron el botín a Samaria. 9 Pero había allí un profeta del Señor llamado Oded, y este salió al encuentro del ejército que venía a Samaria, y les dijo(M): He aquí, porque el Señor, Dios de vuestros padres, estaba airado con Judá, los ha entregado en vuestras manos(N), y los habéis matado con una furia que ha llegado hasta el cielo(O). 10 Y ahora os proponéis subyugar a los hijos de Judá y de Jerusalén como esclavos y esclavas vuestros(P). ¿No tenéis ciertamente transgresiones de parte vuestra contra el Señor vuestro Dios? 11 Ahora pues, oídme, y devolved a los cautivos que capturasteis de vuestros hermanos(Q), porque el furor de la ira(R) del Señor está contra vosotros. 12 Entonces algunos de los jefes de los hijos de Efraín: Azarías, hijo de Johanán, Berequías, hijo de Mesilemot, Ezequías, hijo de Salum, y Amasa, hijo de Hadlai, se levantaron contra los que venían de la batalla, 13 y les dijeron: No traigáis aquí a los cautivos; porque os proponéis traer sobre nosotros culpa contra el Señor, añadiendo a nuestros pecados y a nuestra culpa; porque nuestra culpa es grande y el furor de su ira está contra Israel. 14 Entonces los hombres armados dejaron los cautivos y el botín delante de los oficiales y de toda la asamblea. 15 Y se levantaron los hombres que habían sido designados por nombre(S) y tomaron a los cautivos, y del botín vistieron a todos los desnudos y les dieron vestidos y sandalias; les dieron de comer y de beber(T) y los ungieron, y condujeron en asnos a todos los débiles y los llevaron a Jericó, ciudad de las palmeras(U), junto a sus hermanos; entonces volvieron a Samaria.

16 En aquel tiempo el rey Acaz envió a pedir ayuda a los reyes[e] de Asiria(V). 17 Porque los edomitas habían venido de nuevo y atacado a Judá y se habían llevado algunos cautivos(W). 18 También los filisteos(X) habían invadido las ciudades de las tierras bajas[f] y del Neguev[g] de Judá, y habían tomado Bet-semes, Ajalón, Gederot y Soco con sus aldeas, Timna con sus aldeas, y Gimzo con sus aldeas; y se establecieron[h] allí. 19 Porque el Señor humilló a Judá a causa de Acaz, rey de Israel(Y), pues él había permitido el desenfreno en Judá, y fue muy infiel al Señor. 20 Y vino contra él Tilgat-pilneser[i], rey de Asiria, y lo afligió(Z) en vez de fortalecerlo. 21 Pues Acaz había tomado una porción del tesoro de la casa del Señor, del palacio del rey y de los príncipes, y la había dado al rey de Asiria(AA); pero no le sirvió de nada.

22 Y en el tiempo de su angustia este rey Acaz fue aún más infiel al Señor(AB); 23 sacrificaba a los dioses de Damasco que lo habían derrotado[j], y decía: Por cuanto los dioses de los reyes de Aram los ayudaron, sacrificaré a ellos(AC) para que me ayuden. Pero ellos fueron su ruina y la[k] de todo Israel(AD). 24 Además, cuando Acaz recogió los utensilios de la casa de Dios, hizo pedazos los utensilios de la casa de Dios(AE); cerró las puertas de la casa del Señor(AF) e hizo para sí altares en cada rincón de Jerusalén(AG). 25 Y en cada ciudad de Judá hizo lugares altos para quemar incienso a otros dioses, y provocó a ira al Señor, Dios de sus padres. 26 (AH)Los demás de sus hechos y todos sus caminos, los primeros y los postreros, he aquí, están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel. 27 Y durmió Acaz con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en la ciudad, en Jerusalén, pues no lo pusieron en los sepulcros de los reyes de Israel(AI); y su hijo Ezequías reinó en su lugar(AJ).

10 And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the Lord your God?

11 Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, which ye have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.

12 Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the war,

13 And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against the Lord already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.

14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation.

15 And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.

16 At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him.

17 For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives.

18 The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.

19 For the Lord brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the Lord.

20 And Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.

21 For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the Lord, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.

22 And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the Lord: this is that king Ahaz.

23 For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.

25 And in every several city of Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.

26 Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
