Amaziah Reigns in Judah(A)
25 Amaziah (B)was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, (C)but not with a loyal heart.
3 (D)Now it happened, as soon as the kingdom was established for him, that he executed his servants who had murdered his father the king. 4 However he did not execute their children, but did as it is written in the Law in the Book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying, (E)“The fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall the children be put to death for their fathers; but a person shall die for his own sin.”
The War Against Edom(F)
5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together and set over them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, according to their fathers’ houses, throughout all Judah and Benjamin; and he numbered them (G)from twenty years old and above, and found them to be three hundred thousand choice men, able to go to war, who could handle spear and shield. 6 He also hired one hundred thousand mighty men of valor from Israel for one hundred talents of silver. 7 But a (H)man of God came to him, saying, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel—not with any of the children of Ephraim. 8 But if you go, be gone! Be strong in battle! Even so, God shall make you fall before the enemy; for God has (I)power to help and to overthrow.”
9 Then Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do about the hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?”
And the man of God answered, (J)“The Lord is able to give you much more than this.” 10 So Amaziah discharged the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, to go back home. Therefore their anger was greatly aroused against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
11 Then Amaziah strengthened himself, and leading his people, he went to (K)the Valley of Salt and killed ten thousand of the people of Seir. 12 Also the children of Judah took captive ten thousand alive, brought them to the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were dashed in pieces.
13 But as for the soldiers of the army which Amaziah had discharged, so that they would not go with him to battle, they raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon, killed three thousand in them, and took much [a]spoil.
14 Now it was so, after Amaziah came from the slaughter of the Edomites, that (L)he brought the gods of the people of Seir, set them up to be (M)his gods, and bowed down before them and burned incense to them. 15 Therefore the anger of the Lord was aroused against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you sought (N)the gods of the people, which (O)could not rescue their own people from your hand?”
16 So it was, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, “Have we made you the king’s counselor? Cease! Why should you be killed?”
Then the prophet ceased, and said, “I know that God has (P)determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice.”
Israel Defeats Judah(Q)
17 Now (R)Amaziah king of Judah asked advice and sent to [b]Joash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us face one another in battle.”
18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as wife’; and a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle. 19 Indeed you say that you have defeated the Edomites, and your heart is lifted up to (S)boast. Stay at home now; why should you meddle with trouble, that you should fall—you and Judah with you?”
20 But Amaziah would not heed, for (T)it came from God, that He might give them into the hand of their enemies, because they (U)sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash king of Israel went out; and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at (V)Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent. 23 Then Joash the king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of (W)Jehoahaz, at Beth Shemesh; and he brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate—four hundred cubits. 24 And he took all the gold and silver, all the articles that were found in the house of God with (X)Obed-Edom, the treasures of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.
Death of Amaziah(Y)
25 (Z)Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from first to last, indeed are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 After the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. 28 Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in [c]the City of Judah.

25 DE VEINTICINCO años era Amasías cuando comenzó á reinar, y veintinueve años reinó en Jerusalem: el nombre de su madre fué Joaddan, de Jerusalem.
2 Hizo él lo recto en los ojos de Jehová aunque no de perfecto corazón.
3 Y luego que fué confirmado en el reino, mató á sus siervos que habían muerto al rey su padre;
4 Mas no mató á los hijos de ellos, según lo que está escrito en la ley en el libro de Moisés, donde Jehová mandó, diciendo: No morirán los padres por los hijos, ni los hijos por los padres; mas cada uno morirá por su pecado.
5 Juntó luego Amasías á Judá, y con arreglo á las familias púsoles tribunos y centuriones por todo Judá y Benjamín; y tomólos por lista de veinte años arriba, y fueron hallados en ellos trescientos mil escogidos para salir á la guerra, que tenían lanza y escudo.
6 Y de Israel tomó á sueldo cien mil hombres valientes, por cien talentos de plata.
7 Mas un varón de Dios vino á él, diciéndole: Rey, no vaya contigo el ejército de Israel; porque Jehová no es con Israel, ni con todos los hijos de Ephraim.
8 Pero si tú vas, si lo haces, y te esfuerzas para pelear, Dios te hará caer delante de los enemigos; porque en Dios está la fortaleza, ó para ayudar, ó para derribar.
9 Y Amasías dijo al varón de Dios: ¿Qué pues se hará de cien talentos que he dado al ejército de Israel? Y el varón de Dios respondió: De Jehová es darte mucho más que esto.
10 Entonces Amasías apartó el escuadrón de la gente que había venido á él de Ephraim, para que se fuesen á sus casas: y ellos se enojaron grandemente contra Judá, y volviéronse á sus casas encolerizados.
11 Esforzándose entonces Amasías, sacó su pueblo, y vino al valle de la Sal: é hirió de los hijos de Seir diez mil.
12 Y los hijos de Judá tomaron vivos otros diez mil, los cuales llevaron á la cumbre de un peñasco, y de allí los despeñaron, y todos se hicieron pedazos.
13 Empero los del escuadrón que Amasías había despedido, porque no fuesen con él á la guerra, derramáronse sobre las ciudades de Judá, desde Samaria hasta Beth-oron, é hirieron de ellos tres mil, y tomaron un grande despojo.
14 Regresando luego Amasías de la matanza de los Idumeos, trajo también consigo los dioses de los hijos de Seir, y púsoselos para sí por dioses, y encorvóse delante de ellos, y quemóles perfumes.
15 Encendióse por tanto el furor de Jehová contra Amasías, y envió á él un profeta, que le dijo: ¿Por qué has buscado los dioses de gente, que no libraron á su pueblo de tus manos?
16 Y hablándole el profeta estas cosas, él le respondió: ¿Hante puesto á ti por consejero del rey? Déjate de eso: ¿por qué quieres que te maten? Y al cesar, el profeta dijo luego: Yo sé que Dios ha acordado destruirte, porque has hecho esto, y no obedeciste á mi consejo.
17 Y Amasías rey de Judá, habido su consejo, envió á decir á Joas, hijo de Joachâz hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel: Ven, y veámonos cara á cara.
18 Entonces Joas rey de Israel envió á decir á Amasías rey de Judá: El cardo que estaba en el Líbano, envió al cedro que estaba en el Líbano, diciendo: Da tu hija á mi hijo por mujer. Y he aquí que las bestias fieras que estaban en el Líbano, pasaron, y hollaron el cardo.
19 Tú dices: He aquí he herido á Edom; y tu corazón se enaltece para gloriarte: ahora estáte en tu casa; ¿para qué te entrometes en mal, para caer tú y Judá contigo?
20 Mas Amasías no quiso oir; porque estaba de Dios, que los quería entregar en manos de sus enemigos, por cuanto habían buscado los dioses de Edom.
21 Subió pues Joas rey de Israel, y viéronse cara á cara él y Amasías rey de Judá, en Beth-semes, la cual es de Judá.
22 Pero cayó Judá delante de Israel, y huyó cada uno á su estancia.
23 Y Joas rey de Israel prendió en Beth-semes á Amasías rey de Judá, hijo de Joas hijo de Joachâz, y llevólo á Jerusalem: y derribó el muro de Jerusalem desde la puerta de Ephraim hasta la puerta del ángulo, cuatrocientos codos.
24 Asimismo tomó todo el oro y plata, y todos los vasos que se hallaron en la casa de Dios en casa de Obed-edom, y los tesoros de la casa del rey, y los hijos de los príncipes, y volvióse á Samaria.
25 Y vivió Amasías hijo de Joas, rey de Judá, quince años después de la muerte de Joas hijo de Joachâz rey de Israel.
26 Lo demás de los hechos de Amasías, primeros y postreros, ¿no está escrito en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel?
27 Desde aquel tiempo que Amasías se apartó de Jehová, maquinaron contra él conjuración en Jerusalem; y habiendo él huído á Lachîs, enviaron tras él á Lachîs, y allá lo mataron;
28 Y trajéronlo en caballos, y sepultáronlo con sus padres en la ciudad de Judá.

Avvento di Amazia
25 Quando divenne re, Amazia aveva venticinque anni; regnò ventinove anni in Gerusalemme. Sua madre, di Gerusalemme, si chiamava Ioaddan. 2 Egli fece ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore, ma non con cuore perfetto. 3 Quando il regno si fu rafforzato nelle sue mani, egli uccise gli ufficiali che avevano assassinato il re suo padre. 4 Ma non uccise i loro figli, perché sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè il comando del Signore: «I padri non moriranno per i figli, né i figli per i padri, ma ognuno morirà per il suo peccato».
Guerra contro Edom
5 Amazia riunì quelli di Giuda e li distribuì, secondo i casati, sotto capi di migliaia e sotto capi di centinaia, per tutto Giuda e Beniamino. Fece un censimento di tutti gli abitanti dai vent'anni in su e trovò che c'erano trecentomila uomini atti alla guerra, armati di lancia e di scudo. 6 Egli assoldò da Israele centomila uomini valorosi per cento talenti d'argento.
7 Gli si presentò un uomo di Dio che gli disse: «O re, non si unisca a te l'esercito di Israele, perché il Signore non è con Israele, né con alcuno dei figli di Efraim. 8 Ma se tu vuoi marciare con loro, fà pure. Raffòrzati pure per la battaglia; Dio ti farà stramazzare davanti al nemico, poiché Dio ha la forza per aiutare e per abbattere». 9 Amazia rispose all'uomo di Dio: «Che ne sarà dei cento talenti che ho dato per la schiera di Israele?». L'uomo di Dio rispose: «Il Signore può darti molto più di questo». 10 Amazia congedò la schiera venuta a lui da Efraim perché se ne tornasse a casa; ma la loro ira divampò contro Giuda; tornarono a casa loro pieni di sdegno.
11 Amazia, fattosi animo, andò a capo del suo esercito nella Valle del sale, ove sconfisse diecimila figli di Seir. 12 Quelli di Giuda ne catturarono diecimila vivi e, condottili sulla cima della Roccia, li precipitarono giù; tutti si sfracellarono. 13 I componenti della schiera, che Amazia aveva congedato perché non andassero con lui, assalirono le città di Giuda, da Samaria a Bet-Coròn, uccidendo in esse tremila persone e facendo un immenso bottino.
14 Tornato dalla vittoria sugli Idumei, Amazia fece portare le divinità dei figli di Seir e le costituì suoi dei e si prostrò davanti a loro e offrì loro incenso. 15 Perciò l'ira del Signore divampò contro Amazia; gli mandò un profeta che gli disse: «Perché ti sei rivolto a dei che non sono stati capace di liberare il loro popolo dalla tua mano?». 16 Mentre costui lo apostrofava, il re lo interruppe: «Forse ti abbiamo costituito consigliere del re? Smettila! Perché vuoi farti uccidere?». Il profeta cessò, ma disse: «Vedo che Dio ha deciso di distruggerti, perché hai fatto una cosa simile e non hai dato retta al mio consiglio».
Guerra contro Israele
17 Consigliatosi, Amazia re di Giuda mandò a dire a Ioas figlio di Ioacaz, figlio di Ieu, re di Israele: «Su, misuriamoci in guerra!». 18 Ioas re di Israele fece rispondere ad Amazia re di Giuda: «Il cardo del Libano mandò a dire al cedro del Libano: Dà in moglie tua figlia a mio figlio. Ma una bestia selvatica del Libano passò e calpestò il cardo. 19 Tu ripeti: Ecco ho sconfitto Edom! E il tuo cuore si è inorgoglito esaltandosi. Ma stattene a casa! Perché provocare una calamità e precipitare tu e Giuda con te?».
20 Ma Amazia non diede ascolto. Era volontà di Dio che fossero consegnati nelle mani del nemico, perché si erano rivolti agli dei di Edom. 21 Allora si mosse Ioas re di Israele; si sfidarono a battaglia, lui e Amazia re di Giuda, in Bet-Sèmes che appartiene a Giuda. 22 Giuda fu sconfitto di fronte a Israele e ognuno fuggì nella sua tenda. 23 Ioas re di Israele in Bet-Sèmes fece prigioniero Amazia re di Giuda, figlio di Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz. Condottolo in Gerusalemme, demolì una parte delle mura cittadine, dalla porta di Efraim fino alla porta dell'Angolo, per quattrocento cubiti. 24 Prese tutto l'oro, l'argento e tutti gli oggetti trovati nel tempio di Dio, che erano affidati a Obed-Edom, i tesori della reggia e alcuni ostaggi e poi tornò a Samaria.
Fine del regno
25 Amazia figlio di Ioas, re di Giuda, visse ancora quindici anni dopo la morte di Ioas figlio di Ioacaz, re di Israele. 26 Le altre gesta di Amazia, le prime come le ultime, sono descritte nel libro dei re di Giuda e di Israele.
27 Dopo che Amazia si fu allontanato dal Signore, fu ordita una congiura contro di lui in Gerusalemme. Egli fuggì in Lachis, ma lo fecero inseguire fino a Lachis e là l'uccisero. 28 Lo caricarono su cavalli e lo seppellirono con i suoi padri nella città di Davide.
