25 ¶ Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
3 For when he was confirmed in the kingdom, he slew his slaves that had killed the king, his father.
4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but each one shall die for his own sin.
5 Moreover, Amaziah gathered Judah together and made them captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin; and he numbered them from twenty years old and above and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
6 He also hired one hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for one hundred talents of silver.
7 But a man of God came unto him, saying, O king, do not let not the army of Israel go with thee, for the LORD is not with Israel nor with all the sons of Ephraim.
8 But if thou wilt go, if thou wilt do it, and strengthen thyself for the battle, God shall make thee fall before the enemy; for in God is the strength, to help or to cast down.
9 Then Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
10 Then Amaziah separated the army of those that had come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again; therefore, their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
11 And Amaziah strengthened himself and led forth his people and went to the valley of salt and smote of the sons of Seir, ten thousand.
12 And the sons of Judah took another ten thousand alive, whom they took unto the top of the rock and cast them down from the top of the rock, and they were all broken in pieces.
13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them and took much spoil.
14 ¶ Now after Amaziah came back from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up to be his gods and bowed down before them and burned incense unto them.
15 Therefore, the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent him a prophet who said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of a people who could not deliver their own people out of thy hand?
16 And as the prophet was speaking these things unto him, he said unto him, Art thou appointed as the king’s counsel? Forbear; why should thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare and said, I know that God has determined to destroy thee because thou hast done this and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.
17 ¶ Then Amaziah, king of Judah, took advice and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another face to face.
18 And Joash, king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife. And behold, the wild beasts that were in Lebanon, passed by, and trode down the thistle.
19 Thou sayest, Behold, I have smitten Edom; and with this thy heart lifts thee up to boast; abide now at home; why should thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou should fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom.
21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another face to face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which is of Judah.
22 But Judah fell before Israel, and they fled each man to his tent.
23 And Joash, the king of Israel, took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
24 And he took all the gold and the silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
25 And Amaziah, the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years.
26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish, but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.
28 And they brought him upon horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

Amaziah King of Judah(A)(B)(C)
25 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.(D) 3 After the kingdom was firmly in his control, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. 4 Yet he did not put their children to death, but acted in accordance with what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses,(E) where the Lord commanded: “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor children be put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[a](F)
5 Amaziah called the people of Judah together and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He then mustered(G) those twenty years old(H) or more and found that there were three hundred thousand men fit for military service,(I) able to handle the spear and shield. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand fighting men from Israel for a hundred talents[b] of silver.
7 But a man of God came to him and said, “Your Majesty, these troops from Israel(J) must not march with you, for the Lord is not with Israel—not with any of the people of Ephraim. 8 Even if you go and fight courageously in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has the power to help or to overthrow.”(K)
9 Amaziah asked the man of God, “But what about the hundred talents I paid for these Israelite troops?”
The man of God replied, “The Lord can give you much more than that.”(L)
10 So Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. They were furious with Judah and left for home in a great rage.(M)
11 Amaziah then marshaled his strength and led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he killed ten thousand men of Seir. 12 The army of Judah also captured ten thousand men alive, took them to the top of a cliff and threw them down so that all were dashed to pieces.(N)
13 Meanwhile the troops that Amaziah had sent back and had not allowed to take part in the war raided towns belonging to Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon. They killed three thousand people and carried off great quantities of plunder.
14 When Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods,(O) bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them. 15 The anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him, who said, “Why do you consult this people’s gods, which could not save(P) their own people from your hand?”
16 While he was still speaking, the king said to him, “Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?”
So the prophet stopped but said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
17 After Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, he sent this challenge to Jehoash[c] son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel: “Come, let us face each other in battle.”
18 But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle(Q) in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 19 You say to yourself that you have defeated Edom, and now you are arrogant and proud. But stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?”
20 Amaziah, however, would not listen, for God so worked that he might deliver them into the hands of Jehoash, because they sought the gods of Edom.(R) 21 So Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah. 22 Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 23 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah,[d] at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate(S) to the Corner Gate(T)—a section about four hundred cubits[e] long. 24 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of God that had been in the care of Obed-Edom,(U) together with the palace treasures and the hostages, and returned to Samaria.
25 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 26 As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord, they conspired against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish(V), but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 28 He was brought back by horse and was buried with his ancestors in the City of Judah.[f]

Amaţia, împăratul lui Iuda
25 Amaţia a ajuns împărat la vârsta de douăzeci şi cinci(A) de ani şi a domnit douăzeci şi nouă de ani la Ierusalim. Mamă-sa se chema Ioadan, din Ierusalim. 2 El a făcut ce este bine înaintea Domnului, dar cu o inimă care nu(B) era în totul dată Lui. 3 Când s-a întărit(C) domnia în mâinile lui, a omorât pe slujitorii care uciseseră pe împăratul, tatăl său. 4 Dar n-a omorât pe fiii lor, căci a lucrat potrivit cu ceea ce este scris în lege, în cartea lui Moise, unde Domnul dă porunca aceasta: „Să nu se omoare(D) părinţii pentru copii şi să nu se omoare copiii pentru părinţi, ci fiecare să fie omorât pentru păcatul lui.” 5 Amaţia a strâns pe oamenii din Iuda şi i-a pus după casele părinteşti, căpetenii peste mii şi căpetenii peste sute, pentru tot Iuda şi Beniamin. Le-a făcut numărătoarea de la(E) vârsta de douăzeci de ani în sus şi a găsit trei sute de mii de oameni aleşi, în stare să poarte armele, mânuind suliţa şi scutul. 6 A mai tocmit cu plată din Israel o sută de mii de viteji, cu o sută de talanţi de argint. 7 Un om al lui Dumnezeu a venit la el şi a zis: „Împărate, să nu meargă cu tine oastea lui Israel, căci Domnul nu este cu Israel, nu este cu toţi aceşti fii ai lui Efraim. 8 Dacă mergi cu ei, chiar dacă ai face la luptă fapte de vitejie, să ştii că Dumnezeu te va face să cazi înaintea vrăjmaşului. Căci Dumnezeu are putere(F) să te ajute şi să te facă să cazi.” 9 Amaţia a zis omului lui Dumnezeu: „Dar ce să fac cu cei o sută de talanţi pe care i-am dat oastei lui Israel?” Omul lui Dumnezeu a răspuns: „Domnul poate(G) să-ţi dea mult mai mult decât atât.” 10 Atunci, Amaţia a despărţit ceata care-i venise din Efraim şi a poruncit ca oamenii aceştia să se întoarcă acasă. Dar ei s-au mâniat foarte tare pe Iuda şi au plecat acasă cu mare furie. 11 Amaţia s-a îmbărbătat şi şi-a dus poporul în Valea Sării(H), unde a bătut zece mii de oameni din fiii lui Seir. 12 Şi fiii lui Iuda au prins din ei zece mii de inşi vii, pe care i-au dus pe vârful unei stânci, de unde i-au prăvălit în vale, aşa încât toţi au fost zdrobiţi. 13 Însă oamenii din ceata căreia îi dăduse drumul ca să nu meargă la război cu el au năvălit în cetăţile lui Iuda, de la Samaria până la Bet-Horon, au ucis acolo trei mii de inşi şi au luat multe prăzi.
Războiul cu Ioas
14 Când s-a întors Amaţia de la înfrângerea edomiţilor, a adus(I) pe dumnezeii fiilor lui Seir şi i-a pus dumnezei pentru(J) el; s-a închinat înaintea lor şi le-a adus tămâie. 15 Atunci, Domnul S-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Amaţia şi a trimis la el pe un proroc, care i-a zis: „Pentru ce ai căutat pe dumnezeii(K) poporului acestuia, când ei n-au(L) putut să-şi izbăvească poporul din mâna ta?” 16 Pe când vorbea el, Amaţia i-a zis: „Oare te-am făcut sfetnic al împăratului? Pleacă! Pentru ce vrei să fii lovit?” Prorocul a plecat zicând: „Ştiu acum că Dumnezeu(M) a hotărât să te nimicească, pentru că ai făcut lucrul acesta şi n-ai ascultat sfatul meu.” 17 După ce s-a sfătuit(N), Amaţia, împăratul lui Iuda, a trimis să spună lui Ioas, fiul lui Ioahaz, fiul lui Iehu, împăratul lui Israel: „Vino să ne vedem faţă în faţă!” 18 Şi Ioas, împăratul lui Israel, a trimis să spună lui Amaţia, împăratul lui Iuda: „Spinul din Liban a trimis să spună cedrului din Liban: ‘Dă pe fiică-ta de nevastă fiului meu!’ Şi fiarele sălbatice din Liban au trecut şi au călcat în picioare spinul. 19 Tu te gândeşti că ai bătut pe edomiţi, şi de aceea ţi se înalţă inima ca să te mândreşti. Acum stai mai bine acasă. Pentru ce să stârneşti un rău care ţi-ar aduce pieirea ta şi a lui Iuda?” 20 Dar Amaţia nu l-a ascultat, fiindcă Dumnezeu(O) hotărâse să-i dea în mâinile vrăjmaşului, căci căutaseră(P) pe dumnezeii Edomului. 21 Şi Ioas, împăratul lui Israel, s-a suit şi s-au văzut în faţă el şi Amaţia, împăratul lui Iuda, la Bet-Şemeşul lui Iuda. 22 Iuda a fost bătut de Israel, şi fiecare a fugit în cortul lui. 23 Ioas, împăratul lui Israel, a luat la Bet-Şemeş pe Amaţia, împăratul lui Iuda, fiul lui(Q) Ioas, fiul lui Ioahaz. L-a adus la Ierusalim şi a făcut o spărtură de patru sute de coţi în zidul Ierusalimului, de la Poarta lui Efraim până la Poarta Unghiului. 24 A luat tot aurul şi argintul, şi toate vasele care se aflau în Casa lui Dumnezeu, la Obed-Edom, şi vistieriile casei împăratului. A luat şi ostatici şi s-a întors la Samaria. 25 Amaţia(R), fiul lui Ioas, împăratul lui Iuda, a trăit cincisprezece ani după moartea lui Ioas, fiul lui Ioahaz, împăratul lui Israel. 26 Celelalte fapte ale lui Amaţia, cele dintâi şi cele de pe urmă, nu sunt scrise oare în cartea împăraţilor lui Iuda şi Israel? 27 De când s-a abătut Amaţia de la Domnul, s-a făcut împotriva lui o uneltire la Ierusalim, şi el a fugit la Lachis. Dar l-au urmărit la Lachis şi l-au omorât. 28 L-au adus pe cai şi l-au îngropat cu părinţii săi în cetatea lui Iuda.
