Amaziah Reigns in Judah
25 (A)Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, (B)yet not with a whole heart. 3 And as soon as the royal power was firmly his, he killed his servants who had struck down the king his father. 4 But he did not put their children to death, according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, (C)“Fathers shall not die because of their children, nor children die because of their fathers, but each one shall die for his own sin.”
Amaziah's Victories
5 Then Amaziah assembled the men of Judah and set them by fathers' houses under commanders of thousands and of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He mustered those (D)twenty years old and upward, and found that they were (E)300,000 choice men, fit for war, (F)able to handle spear and shield. 6 He hired also 100,000 mighty men of valor from Israel for 100 talents[a] of silver. 7 But (G)a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel, with all these Ephraimites. 8 But go, act, be strong for the battle. Why should you suppose that God will cast you down before the enemy? (H)For God has power to help or to cast down.” 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do about the hundred talents that I have given to the army of Israel?” The man of God answered, “The Lord is able to give you much more than this.” 10 Then Amaziah discharged the army that had come to him from Ephraim to go home again. And they became very angry with Judah and returned home in fierce anger. 11 But Amaziah took courage and led out his people and went to the (I)Valley of Salt and struck down (J)10,000 men of Seir. 12 The men of Judah captured another 10,000 alive and took them to the top of a rock and threw them down from the top of the rock, and they were all dashed to pieces. 13 But the men of the army whom Amaziah sent back, not letting them go with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah, (K)from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck down 3,000 people in them and took much spoil.
Amaziah's Idolatry
14 After Amaziah came from striking down the Edomites, (L)he brought the gods (M)of the men of Seir and set them up as his gods and worshiped them, making offerings to them. 15 Therefore the Lord was angry with Amaziah and sent to him a prophet, who said to him, “Why have you sought the gods of a people (N)who did not deliver their own people from your hand?” 16 But as he was speaking, the king said to him, “Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but said, “I know that (O)God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
Israel Defeats Amaziah
17 (P)Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.” 18 And Joash the king of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah, (Q)“A thistle on Lebanon sent to a cedar on Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife,’ and a wild beast of Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistle. 19 You say, ‘See, I[b] have struck down Edom,’ and (R)your heart has lifted you up in boastfulness. But now stay at home. Why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it was of God, in order that he might give them into the hand of their enemies, (S)because they had sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another in battle at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 23 And Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, son of (T)Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem for 400 cubits,[c] from (U)the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate. 24 And he seized all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God, in the care of (V)Obed-edom. He seized also the treasuries of the king's house, also hostages, and he returned to Samaria.
25 (W)Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 26 Now the rest of the deeds of Amaziah, from first to last, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time when he turned away from the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent after him to Lachish and put him to death there. 28 And they brought him upon horses, and he was buried with his fathers in the city of David.[d]

Amaziah Succeeds Joash in Judah
25 (A)Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, (B)only not wholeheartedly. 3 Now (C)it came about, as soon as the kingdom was [a]firmly in his grasp, that he killed his servants who had killed his father the king. 4 However, he did not put their children to death, but did as it is written in the Law in the Book of Moses, which the Lord commanded, saying, “(D)Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, nor sons be put to death for fathers; but each shall be put to death for his own sin.”
Amaziah Defeats Edomites
5 Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah and appointed them according to their fathers’ households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds throughout Judah and Benjamin; and he [b]took a census of those (E)from twenty years old and upward and found them to be (F)three hundred thousand choice men, able to go to war and handle spear and shield. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for [c]a hundred talents of silver. 7 But (G)a man of God came to him saying, “O king, do not let the army of Israel come with you, for the Lord is not with Israel nor with any of the sons of Ephraim. 8 But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle; yet God will [d]bring you down before the enemy, (H)for God has the power to help and to [e]bring down.” 9 Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what are we to do about the [f]hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?” And the man of God answered, “(I)The Lord has much more to give you than this.” 10 Then Amaziah [g]dismissed the troops which came to him from Ephraim, to go home; so their anger burned against Judah, and they returned [h]home in fierce anger.
11 Now Amaziah gathered his courage and led his people out, and went to (J)the Valley of Salt, and struck and killed ten thousand of the sons of Seir. 12 The sons of Judah also captured ten thousand alive and brought them to the top of the cliff, and threw them down from the top of the cliff so that they were all dashed to pieces. 13 But the [i]troops whom Amaziah sent back, those not going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck and killed three thousand of them, and plundered a large amount of spoils.
Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry
14 Now after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites, (K)he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up as his gods. Then he bowed down before them and burned incense to them. 15 So the anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you sought the gods of the people (L)who have not saved their own people from your hand?” 16 As he was talking with him, [j]the king said to him, “Have we appointed you to be a royal counselor? Stop! Why should [k]you be put to death?” Then the prophet stopped and said, “I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israel
17 (M)Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, “Come, let’s face each other.” 18 But Joash the king of Israel sent a reply to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “(N)The thorn bush that was in Lebanon sent word to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ But a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thorn bush. 19 You said, ‘Behold, you have [l]defeated Edom.’ And (O)your heart has lifted you up in boasting. Now stay home; why should you provoke trouble so that you, would fall, you and Judah with you?”
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it was from God, so that He might hand them over to Joash, because they had sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh, which belonged to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated [m]by Israel, and they fled, every man to his tent. 23 Then Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of (P)Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, [n]four hundred cubits. 24 He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of God with (Q)Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages too, and returned to Samaria.
25 (R)And Amaziah, the son of Joash king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from the first to the last, behold, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent men after him to Lachish, and they killed him there. 28 Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

25 Amasías tenía veinticinco años cuando ascendió al trono, y reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. Su madre era Joadán, oriunda de Jerusalén. 2 Amasías hizo lo que agrada al Señor, aunque no de todo corazón. 3 Después de afianzarse en el poder, Amasías mató a los ministros que habían asesinado a su padre el rey. 4 Sin embargo, según lo que ordenó el Señor, no mató a los hijos de los asesinos, pues está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés: «A los padres no se les dará muerte por la culpa de sus hijos, ni a los hijos se les dará muerte por la culpa de sus padres, sino que cada uno morirá por su propio pecado».[a]
5 Amasías reunió a los de Judá, y puso al frente de todo Judá y Benjamín jefes de mil y de cien soldados, agrupados según sus familias patriarcales. Censó a los hombres mayores de veinte años, y resultó que había trescientos mil hombres aptos para ir a la guerra y capaces de manejar la lanza y el escudo. 6 Además, por la suma de tres mil trescientos kilos[b] de plata, contrató a cien mil guerreros valientes de Israel.
7 Pero un hombre de Dios fue a verlo y le dijo:
―Oh rey, no permitas que el ejército de Israel vaya contigo, porque el Señor no está con esos efraimitas. 8 Si tú vas con ellos, Dios te derribará delante de tus enemigos aunque luches valerosamente, porque Dios tiene poder para ayudar y poder para derribar.
9 Amasías le preguntó al hombre de Dios:
―¿Qué va a pasar con los tres mil trescientos kilos de plata que pagué al ejército de Israel?
―El Señor puede darte mucho más que eso —respondió.
10 Entonces Amasías dio de baja a las tropas israelitas que habían llegado de Efraín, y las hizo regresar a su país. A raíz de eso, las tropas se enojaron mucho con Judá y regresaron furiosas a sus casas.
11 Armándose de valor, Amasías guio al ejército hasta el valle de la Sal, donde mató a diez mil hombres de Seír. 12 El ejército de Judá capturó vivos a otros diez mil. A estos los hicieron subir a la cima de una roca, y desde allí los despeñaron. Todos murieron destrozados.
13 Mientras esto sucedía, las tropas que Amasías había dado de baja se lanzaron contra las ciudades de Judá, y desde Samaria hasta Bet Jorón mataron a tres mil personas y se llevaron un enorme botín.
14 Cuando Amasías regresó de derrotar a los edomitas, se llevó consigo los dioses de los habitantes de Seír y los adoptó como sus dioses, adorándolos y quemándoles incienso. 15 Por eso el Señor se encendió en ira contra Amasías y le envió un profeta con este mensaje:
―¿Por qué sigues a unos dioses que no pudieron librar de tus manos a su propio pueblo?
16 El rey interrumpió al profeta y le replicó:
―¿Y quién te ha nombrado consejero del rey? Si no quieres que te maten, ¡no sigas fastidiándome!
El profeta se limitó a añadir:
―Solo sé que, por haber hecho esto y por no seguir mi consejo, Dios ha resuelto destruirte.
17 Sin embargo, Amasías, rey de Judá, siguiendo el consejo de otros, envió mensajeros a Joás, hijo de Joacaz y nieto de Jehú, rey de Israel, con este reto: «¡Ven acá, para que nos enfrentemos!»
18 Pero Joás, rey de Israel, le respondió a Amasías, rey de Judá: «El cardo del Líbano le mandó este mensaje al cedro: “¡Entrega tu hija como esposa a mi hijo!” Pero luego pasaron por allí las fieras del Líbano, y aplastaron el cardo. 19 Tú te jactas de haber derrotado a los edomitas; ¡el éxito se te ha subido a la cabeza! Está bien, jáctate si quieres, pero quédate en casa. ¿Para qué provocas una desgracia que significará tu perdición y la de Judá?»
20 Como estaba en los planes de Dios entregar a Amasías en poder del enemigo por haber seguido a los dioses de Edom, Amasías no le hizo caso a Joás. 21 Entonces Joás, rey de Israel, marchó a Bet Semes, que está en Judá, para enfrentarse con él. 22 Los israelitas batieron a los de Judá, y estos huyeron a sus hogares. 23 En Bet Semes, Joás, rey de Israel, capturó a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás y nieto de Joacaz.[c] Luego fue a Jerusalén y derribó ciento ochenta metros[d] de la muralla, desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta de la Esquina. 24 Además, se apoderó de todo el oro, la plata y los utensilios que estaban en el templo de Dios bajo el cuidado de Obed Edom. También se llevó los tesoros del palacio real, tomó rehenes y regresó a Samaria.
25 Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, sobrevivió quince años a Joás hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 26 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Amasías, desde el primero hasta el último, están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel. 27 Desde el momento en que Amasías abandonó al Señor, se tramó una conspiración contra él en Jerusalén. Entonces Amasías huyó a Laquis, pero lo persiguieron y allí lo mataron. 28 Luego lo llevaron a caballo hasta la capital de Judá, donde fue sepultado con sus antepasados.
