Amaziah Reigns in Judah
25 (A)Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, (B)yet not with a whole heart. 3 And as soon as the royal power was firmly his, he killed his servants who had struck down the king his father. 4 But he did not put their children to death, according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, (C)“Fathers shall not die because of their children, nor children die because of their fathers, but each one shall die for his own sin.”
Amaziah's Victories
5 Then Amaziah assembled the men of Judah and set them by fathers' houses under commanders of thousands and of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He mustered those (D)twenty years old and upward, and found that they were (E)300,000 choice men, fit for war, (F)able to handle spear and shield. 6 He hired also 100,000 mighty men of valor from Israel for 100 talents[a] of silver. 7 But (G)a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel, with all these Ephraimites. 8 But go, act, be strong for the battle. Why should you suppose that God will cast you down before the enemy? (H)For God has power to help or to cast down.” 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do about the hundred talents that I have given to the army of Israel?” The man of God answered, “The Lord is able to give you much more than this.” 10 Then Amaziah discharged the army that had come to him from Ephraim to go home again. And they became very angry with Judah and returned home in fierce anger. 11 But Amaziah took courage and led out his people and went to the (I)Valley of Salt and struck down (J)10,000 men of Seir. 12 The men of Judah captured another 10,000 alive and took them to the top of a rock and threw them down from the top of the rock, and they were all dashed to pieces. 13 But the men of the army whom Amaziah sent back, not letting them go with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah, (K)from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck down 3,000 people in them and took much spoil.
Amaziah's Idolatry
14 After Amaziah came from striking down the Edomites, (L)he brought the gods (M)of the men of Seir and set them up as his gods and worshiped them, making offerings to them. 15 Therefore the Lord was angry with Amaziah and sent to him a prophet, who said to him, “Why have you sought the gods of a people (N)who did not deliver their own people from your hand?” 16 But as he was speaking, the king said to him, “Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but said, “I know that (O)God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
Israel Defeats Amaziah
17 (P)Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.” 18 And Joash the king of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah, (Q)“A thistle on Lebanon sent to a cedar on Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife,’ and a wild beast of Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistle. 19 You say, ‘See, I[b] have struck down Edom,’ and (R)your heart has lifted you up in boastfulness. But now stay at home. Why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it was of God, in order that he might give them into the hand of their enemies, (S)because they had sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another in battle at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 23 And Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, son of (T)Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem for 400 cubits,[c] from (U)the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate. 24 And he seized all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God, in the care of (V)Obed-edom. He seized also the treasuries of the king's house, also hostages, and he returned to Samaria.
25 (W)Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 26 Now the rest of the deeds of Amaziah, from first to last, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time when he turned away from the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent after him to Lachish and put him to death there. 28 And they brought him upon horses, and he was buried with his fathers in the city of David.[d]

Amaziah King of Judah(A)(B)(C)
25 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.(D) 3 After the kingdom was firmly in his control, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. 4 Yet he did not put their children to death, but acted in accordance with what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses,(E) where the Lord commanded: “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor children be put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[a](F)
5 Amaziah called the people of Judah together and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He then mustered(G) those twenty years old(H) or more and found that there were three hundred thousand men fit for military service,(I) able to handle the spear and shield. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand fighting men from Israel for a hundred talents[b] of silver.
7 But a man of God came to him and said, “Your Majesty, these troops from Israel(J) must not march with you, for the Lord is not with Israel—not with any of the people of Ephraim. 8 Even if you go and fight courageously in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has the power to help or to overthrow.”(K)
9 Amaziah asked the man of God, “But what about the hundred talents I paid for these Israelite troops?”
The man of God replied, “The Lord can give you much more than that.”(L)
10 So Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. They were furious with Judah and left for home in a great rage.(M)
11 Amaziah then marshaled his strength and led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he killed ten thousand men of Seir. 12 The army of Judah also captured ten thousand men alive, took them to the top of a cliff and threw them down so that all were dashed to pieces.(N)
13 Meanwhile the troops that Amaziah had sent back and had not allowed to take part in the war raided towns belonging to Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon. They killed three thousand people and carried off great quantities of plunder.
14 When Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods,(O) bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them. 15 The anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him, who said, “Why do you consult this people’s gods, which could not save(P) their own people from your hand?”
16 While he was still speaking, the king said to him, “Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?”
So the prophet stopped but said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
17 After Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, he sent this challenge to Jehoash[c] son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel: “Come, let us face each other in battle.”
18 But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle(Q) in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 19 You say to yourself that you have defeated Edom, and now you are arrogant and proud. But stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?”
20 Amaziah, however, would not listen, for God so worked that he might deliver them into the hands of Jehoash, because they sought the gods of Edom.(R) 21 So Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah. 22 Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 23 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah,[d] at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate(S) to the Corner Gate(T)—a section about four hundred cubits[e] long. 24 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of God that had been in the care of Obed-Edom,(U) together with the palace treasures and the hostages, and returned to Samaria.
25 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 26 As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord, they conspired against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish(V), but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 28 He was brought back by horse and was buried with his ancestors in the City of Judah.[f]

Amasia, re di Giuda; vittoria sugli Edomiti
25 (A)Amasia aveva venticinque anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò ventinove anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Ieoaddan ed era di Gerusalemme.
2 Egli fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore, ma non di tutto cuore. 3 Quando il regno fu bene assicurato nelle sue mani, egli fece morire quei suoi servitori che avevano ucciso il re, suo padre. 4 Ma non fece morire i loro figli, conformandosi a quanto è scritto nella legge, nel libro di Mosè, dove il Signore ha dato questo comandamento: «Non si metteranno a morte i padri per colpa dei figli, né si metteranno a morte i figli per colpa dei padri; ognuno sarà messo a morte per il proprio peccato».
5 Poi Amasia radunò quelli di Giuda e li distribuì secondo le loro case patriarcali sotto i capi di migliaia e sotto i capi di centinaia, per tutto Giuda e Beniamino; ne fece il censimento dall’età di vent’anni in su, e trovò trecentomila uomini scelti, abili alla guerra e capaci di maneggiare la lancia e lo scudo. 6 Assoldò anche centomila uomini d’Israele, forti e valorosi, per cento talenti d’argento.
7 Ma un uomo di Dio venne da lui e gli disse: «O re, l’esercito d’Israele non vada con te, poiché il Signore non è con Israele, con tutti questi figli di Efraim! 8 Ma, se vuoi andare, compòrtati pure valorosamente nella battaglia, ma Dio ti abbatterà davanti al nemico; perché Dio ha il potere di soccorrere e di abbattere». 9 Amasia disse all’uomo di Dio: «E che fare di quei cento talenti che ho dati all’esercito d’Israele?» L’uomo di Dio rispose: «Il Signore è in grado di darti molto di più di questo». 10 Allora Amasia separò l’esercito che gli era venuto da Efraim, affinché se ne tornasse al suo paese; ma questa gente fu gravemente irritata contro Giuda e se ne tornò a casa, accesa d’ira.
11 Amasia, preso coraggio, si mise alla testa del suo popolo, andò nella valle del Sale e sconfisse diecimila uomini dei figli di Seir. 12 I figli di Giuda ne catturarono vivi altri diecimila, li condussero in cima alla rupe e li precipitarono giù dall’alto della rupe, in modo che tutti rimasero sfracellati.
13 Ma gli uomini dell’esercito che Amasia aveva licenziati, perché non andassero con lui alla guerra, piombarono sulle città di Giuda, da Samaria fino a Bet-Oron; ne uccisero tremila abitanti e portarono via molto bottino.
Idolatria di Amasia; sconfitta davanti a Israele
14 (B)Amasia, ritornato dalla sconfitta degli Idumei, si fece portare gli dèi dei figli di Seir, li stabilì come suoi dèi, si prostrò davanti a loro e bruciò dei profumi in loro onore. 15 Perciò il Signore si accese d’ira contro Amasia e gli mandò un profeta per dirgli: «Perché hai cercato gli dèi di questo popolo, che non hanno liberato il popolo loro dalla tua mano?» 16 Mentre egli parlava al re, questi gli disse: «Ti abbiamo forse fatto consigliere del re? Smettila! Perché vorresti essere ucciso?» Allora il profeta se ne andò, dicendo: «Io so che Dio ha deciso di distruggerti, perché hai fatto questo e non hai dato ascolto al mio consiglio».
17 Allora Amasia, re di Giuda, dopo aver preso consiglio, inviò dei messaggeri a Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, figlio di Ieu, re d’Israele, per dirgli: «Vieni, mettiamoci faccia a faccia!» 18 Ioas, re d’Israele, fece dire ad Amasia, re di Giuda: «Lo spino del Libano mandò a dire al cedro del Libano: “Da’ tua figlia in moglie a mio figlio”. Ma le bestie selvatiche del Libano passarono e calpestarono lo spino. 19 Tu hai detto: “Ecco, io ho sconfitto gli Idumei!”, e il tuo cuore, reso orgoglioso, ti ha portato a gloriarti. Stattene a casa tua. Perché impegnarti in una disgraziata impresa che condurrebbe alla rovina te e Giuda con te?» 20 Ma Amasia non gli volle dar retta; perché la cosa era diretta da Dio affinché fossero dati in mano del nemico, perché avevano cercato gli dèi di Edom. 21 Allora Ioas, re d’Israele, salì, ed egli e Amasia, re di Giuda, si trovarono l’uno di fronte all’altro a Bet-Semes, che apparteneva a Giuda. 22 Giuda rimase sconfitto da Israele e quelli di Giuda fuggirono, ognuno alla sua tenda. 23 Ioas, re d’Israele, fece prigioniero, a Bet-Semes, Amasia, re di Giuda, figlio di Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz; lo condusse a Gerusalemme e fece una breccia di quattrocento cubiti[a] nelle mura di Gerusalemme, dalla porta di Efraim alla porta dell’Angolo. 24 Prese tutto l’oro e l’argento e tutti i vasi che si trovavano nella casa di Dio in custodia di Obed-Edom, e i tesori della casa del re; prese pure degli ostaggi e se ne tornò a Samaria.
25 Amasia, figlio di Ioas, re di Giuda, visse ancora quindici anni dopo la morte di Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, re d’Israele.
26 Il rimanente delle azioni di Amasia, le prime e le ultime, si trova scritto nel libro dei re di Giuda e d’Israele.
27 Dopo che Amasia ebbe abbandonato il Signore, fu ordita contro di lui una congiura a Gerusalemme, ed egli fuggì a Lachis; ma lo fecero inseguire fino a Lachis, e là fu messo a morte. 28 Da quel luogo fu trasportato sopra dei cavalli e quindi sepolto con i suoi padri nella città di Giuda[b].
