23 But in the seventh year Jehoiada took courage, and entered into a compact with the commanders of the hundreds, Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri. 2 They went about through Judah and gathered the Levites from all the towns of Judah, and the heads of families of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 3 Then the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. Jehoiada[a] said to them, ‘Here is the king’s son! Let him reign, as the Lord promised concerning the sons of David. 4 This is what you are to do: one-third of you, priests and Levites, who come on duty on the sabbath, shall be gatekeepers, 5 one-third shall be at the king’s house, and one-third at the Gate of the Foundation; and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the Lord. 6 Do not let anyone enter the house of the Lord except the priests and ministering Levites; they may enter, for they are holy, but all the other[b] people shall observe the instructions of the Lord. 7 The Levites shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever enters the house shall be killed. Stay with the king in his comings and goings.’

8 The Levites and all Judah did according to all that the priest Jehoiada commanded; each brought his men, who were to come on duty on the sabbath, with those who were to go off duty on the sabbath; for the priest Jehoiada did not dismiss the divisions. 9 The priest Jehoiada delivered to the captains the spears and the large and small shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of God; 10 and he set all the people as a guard for the king, everyone with weapon in hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house. 11 Then he brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant;[c] they proclaimed him king, and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they shouted, ‘Long live the king!’
Athaliah Deposed
12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went into the house of the Lord to the people; 13 and when she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and the singers with their musical instruments leading in the celebration. Athaliah tore her clothes, and cried, ‘Treason! Treason!’ 14 Then the priest Jehoiada brought out the captains who were set over the army, saying to them, ‘Bring her out between the ranks; anyone who follows her is to be put to the sword.’ For the priest said, ‘Do not put her to death in the house of the Lord.’ 15 So they laid hands on her; she went into the entrance of the Horse Gate of the king’s house, and there they put her to death.
16 Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the Lord’s people. 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars. 18 Jehoiada assigned the care of the house of the Lord to the levitical priests whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the Lord, to offer burnt-offerings to the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David. 19 He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean. 20 And he took the captains, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, marching through the upper gate to the king’s house. They set the king on the royal throne. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been killed with the sword.

23 En el séptimo año, Joyadá se animó e hizo un acuerdo con los siguientes capitanes de cien soldados: Azarías hijo de Jeroán, Ismael hijo de Johanán, Azarías hijo de Obed, Maseías hijo de Adaías y Elisafat hijo de Zicrí. 2 Ellos fueron por todo Judá y juntaron a los levitas de todas las ciudades de Judá y también a los jefes de las familias de Israel, y fueron a Jerusalén. 3 La asamblea hizo un acuerdo con el rey en el templo de Dios.
Joyadá les dijo: «Aquí tienen ustedes al hijo del rey. Él será rey, tal como les dijo el SEÑOR a los descendientes de David. 4 Por tanto, hagan lo siguiente: Una tercera parte de ustedes, los sacerdotes levitas que están de servicio el día de descanso, harán guardia en las puertas del templo, 5 otra tercera parte vigilará el palacio real y la otra tercera parte cuidará la puerta de los cimientos, mientras todo el pueblo estará en el patio del templo del SEÑOR. 6 No dejen que entre al templo del SEÑOR nadie más que los sacerdotes y levitas que están de servicio, pues ellos están consagrados. El resto del pueblo debe obedecer el mandato del SEÑOR. 7 Los levitas rodearán al rey, cada uno con sus armas en la mano, y cualquiera que se atreva a entrar al templo, morirá. Se quedarán junto al rey dondequiera que él vaya».
8 Los levitas y toda la gente de Judá obedecieron al sacerdote Joyadá en todo lo que ordenó. Cada uno reunió a sus hombres, tanto a los que estaban de servicio en el templo el día de descanso como a los que quedaban libres, porque el sacerdote Joyadá no dejó ir a los que terminaban su turno. 9 El sacerdote Joyadá les repartió a los capitanes de cien soldados las lanzas y los escudos grandes y pequeños que habían pertenecido al rey David y que se encontraban guardados en el templo de Dios. 10 A todos los puso en sus puestos, cada uno con su lanza en la mano, a la derecha e izquierda del templo y alrededor del rey. 11 Luego sacaron al hijo del rey, le pusieron la corona y le dieron el memorial del pacto entre el rey y Dios.[a] Entonces Joyadá y sus hijos lo consagraron con aceite y lo proclamaron nuevo rey, gritando: «¡Viva el rey!»
12 Atalía escuchó el ruido de la gente que corría y aclamaba al rey, y salió a ver a la gente al templo del SEÑOR. 13 Atalía vio al rey a la entrada junto a la columna donde se ubica el rey, a los líderes, a todo el pueblo alegre tocando trompetas y a los cantores con sus instrumentos musicales al frente de la celebración. Entonces Atalía se rasgó el vestido y gritó: «¡Traición, traición!»
14 El sacerdote Joyadá ordenó a los capitanes que estaban a cargo de los soldados: «Lleven a Atalía fuera del área del templo y maten a los que la sigan, pero no los maten dentro del templo del SEÑOR».
15 Así que los soldados agarraron a Atalía y la mataron cuando pasó por la Entrada de los Caballos del palacio.
16 Entonces Joyadá hizo un pacto entre él mismo, el rey y todo el pueblo, en el que se comprometían a ser el pueblo del SEÑOR. 17 Luego todo el pueblo fue al templo de Baal, y destruyeron la estatua de Baal y sus altares. Los rompieron en muchos pedazos y mataron a Matán, el sacerdote de Baal, delante de uno de los altares.
18 Entonces el sacerdote Joyadá puso personal a cargo del mantenimiento del templo del SEÑOR. Estaban bajo las órdenes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas que David había organizado para servir por turnos en el templo del SEÑOR. Ofrecían los sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente al SEÑOR, tal como está escrito en la ley de Moisés. Lo hacían con mucha alegría y cantando, tal como mandó David. 19 Joyadá también designó a los porteros del templo del SEÑOR para que nadie que estuviera impuro entrara en él.
20 El sacerdote condujo al pueblo desde el templo del SEÑOR hasta la residencia del rey a través de la puerta superior. Los capitanes, los nobles y los capitanes del pueblo iban junto al rey, y el resto de la gente los seguía. Allí hicieron sentar al rey Joás en el trono. 21 Todo el pueblo estuvo contento y la ciudad quedó en paz después de que Atalía fue ejecutada a espada.

23 And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him.
2 And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
3 And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the Lord hath said of the sons of David.
4 This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors;
5 And a third part shall be at the king's house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the Lord.
6 But let none come into the house of the Lord, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the Lord.
7 And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.
8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.
9 Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David's, which were in the house of God.
10 And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about.
11 Then they brought out the king's son, and put upon him the crown, and gave him the testimony, and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, God save the king.
12 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the Lord:
13 And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land rejoiced, and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the Lord.
15 So they laid hands on her; and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king's house, they slew her there.
16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the Lord's people.
17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
18 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the Lord by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the Lord, to offer the burnt offerings of the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David.
19 And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the Lord, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in.
20 And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the Lord: and they came through the high gate into the king's house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
21 And all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword.
