Jehoiada Makes Joash King of Judah
(2 Kings 11.4-21)
23 After Ahaziah's son Joash had hidden in the temple for six years, Jehoiada the priest knew that something had to be done. So he made sure he had the support of several army officers. They were Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri. 2 These five men went to the towns in Judah and called together the Levites and the clan leaders. They all came to Jerusalem 3 (A) and gathered at the temple, where they agreed to help Joash.
Jehoiada said to them:
Joash will be our next king, because long ago the Lord promised that one of David's descendants would always be king. 4 Here is what we will do. Three groups of priests and Levites will be on guard duty on the Sabbath—one group will guard the gates of the temple, 5 one will guard the palace, and the other will guard Foundation Gate. The rest of you will stand guard in the temple courtyards. 6 Only the priests and Levites who are on duty will be able to enter the temple, because they will be the only ones who have gone through the ceremony to make themselves clean and acceptable. The others must stay outside in the courtyards, just as the Lord has commanded. 7 You Levites must protect King Joash. Don't let him out of your sight! And keep your swords ready to kill anyone who comes into the temple.
8 The Levites and the people of Judah followed Jehoiada's orders. The guards going off duty were not allowed to go home, and so each commander had all his guards available—those going off duty as well as those coming on duty. 9 Jehoiada went into the temple and brought out the swords and shields that had belonged to King David, and he gave them to the commanders. 10 They gave the weapons to the guards, and Jehoiada then made sure that the guards took their positions around the temple and the altar to protect the king on every side.
11 Jehoiada and his sons brought Joash outside, where they placed the crown on his head and gave him a copy of the instructions for ruling the nation. Olive oil was poured on his head to show that he was now king, and the crowd cheered and shouted, “Long live the king!”
12 As soon as Queen Athaliah heard the crowd cheering for Joash, she went to the temple. 13 There she saw Joash standing by one of the columns near the entrance, which was the usual place for the king. The commanders and the trumpet players were standing next to him, and the musicians were playing instruments and leading the people as they celebrated and blew trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes in anger and shouted, “You betrayed me, you traitors!”
14 At once, Jehoiada said to the army commanders, “Don't kill her near the Lord's temple. Take her out in front of the troops, and be sure to kill all of her followers!” 15 She tried to escape, but the commanders caught and killed her near the gate where horses are led into the palace.
16 Jehoiada asked King Joash and the people to join with him in being faithful to the Lord. They agreed, 17 then rushed to the temple of the god Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and the idols and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.
18 Jehoiada assigned the priests and Levites their duties at the temple, just as David had done. They were in charge of offering sacrifices to the Lord according to the Law of Moses, and they were responsible for leading the celebrations with singing. 19 Jehoiada ordered the guards at the temple gates to keep out anyone who was unclean.
20 Finally, Jehoiada called together the army commanders, the most important citizens of Judah, and the government officials. The crowd of people followed them as they led Joash from the temple, through the Upper Gate, and into the palace, where he took his place as king of Judah. 21 Everyone celebrated because Athaliah had been killed and Jerusalem was peaceful again.

23 Il settimo anno Jehoiada, fattosi coraggio, prese i capi di centinaia, cioè Azariah figlio di Jeroham, Ismaele figlio di Jehohanam, Azariah figlio di Obed, Maaseiah figlio di Adaiah ed Elishafat figlio di Zikri, ed essi strinsero con lui un'alleanza.
2 Quindi essi percorsero Giuda, radunarono i Leviti, da tutte le città di Giuda e i capi delle case paterne d'Israele e vennero a Gerusalemme.
3 Cosí tutta l'assemblea strinse un'alleanza con il re nella casa di DIO. Quindi Jehoiada disse loro: «Ecco, il figlio del re regnerà, come l'Eterno ha detto dei figli di Davide.
4 Questo è ciò che voi farete: un terzo di voi, sacerdoti e Leviti, che entrano in servizio il sabato, sarà addetto alle porte del tempio;
5 un altro terzo starà nel palazzo del re, e l'altro terzo alla porta della fondazione, mentre tutto il popolo starà nei cortili della casa dell'Eterno.
6 Ma nessuno entri nella casa dell'Eterno, tranne i sacerdoti e i Leviti di servizio; questi possono entrare, perché sono consacrati, ma tutto il popolo si atterrà all'ordine dell'Eterno.
7 I Leviti faranno cerchio attorno al re da tutti i lati, ciascuno con le sue armi in mano; chiunque entra nel tempio sarà messo a morte; voi invece starete col re, quando entrerà e quando uscirà».
8 I Leviti, e tutto Giuda fecero esattamente come il sacerdote Jehoiada aveva comandato; ciascuno prese i suoi uomini, quelli che entravano in servizio di sabato, e quelli che uscivano di servizio il sabato, perché il sacerdote Jehoiada non aveva licenziato le classi uscenti.
9 Il sacerdote Jehoiada diede ai capi di centinaia le lance e gli scudi piccoli e grandi che erano appartenuti al re Davide e che si trovavano nella casa di DIO.
10 Dispose quindi tutto il popolo, ciascuno con la sua arma in mano, dal lato destro al lato sinistro del tempio; lungo l'altare, e accanto al tempio, intorno al re.
11 Allora fecero uscire il figlio del re, gli posero in testa la corona, gli consegnarono la legge e lo proclamarono re; poi Jehoiada e i suoi figli lo unsero e gridarono: «Viva il re!».
12 Quando Athaliah udí il rumore del popolo che accorreva acclamando il re andò verso il popolo nella casa dell'Eterno.
13 Guardò, ed ecco il re stava in piedi sul suo palco all'ingresso, i capitani e i trombettieri erano accanto al re, tutto il popolo del paese gioiva e suonava le trombe e i cantori con i loro strumenti musicali guidavano la lode. Allora Athaliah si stracciò le vesti e gridò: «Tradimento, tradimento!».
14 Ma il sacerdote Jehoiada fece uscire i capi di centinaia che comandavano l'esercito e disse loro: «Fatela uscire di mezzo alle file, e chiunque la segue sia ucciso di spada!». Il sacerdote infatti aveva detto: «Non permettete che sia uccisa nella casa dell'Eterno».
15 Cosí essi la afferrarono e, come ella giunse alla casa del re per la strada della porta dei cavalli, lí fu uccisa.
16 Poi Jehoiada fece un patto tra sé, tutto il popolo e il re, perché Israele fosse il popolo dell'Eterno.
17 Allora tutto il popolo andò al tempio di Baal, e lo demolí: fece interamente a pezzi i suoi altari e le sue immagini e uccise davanti agli altari Mattan, sacerdote di Baal.
18 Poi Jehoiada affidò la sorveglianza della casa dell'Eterno ai sacerdoti levitici, che Davide aveva stabilito nella casa dell'Eterno per offrire olocausti all'Eterno, come è scritto nella legge di Mosè, con allegrezza e con canti, come aveva ordinato Davide.
19 Stabilí inoltre i portinai alle porte della casa dell'Eterno, affinché non vi entrasse nessuno che fosse in alcun modo impuro.
20 Prese quindi i capi di centinaia, i nobili, quelli che avevano autorità sul popolo e tutto il popolo del paese e fece scendere il re dalla casa dell'Eterno, passando quindi per la porta superiore, giunsero al palazzo reale e fecero sedere il re sul trono del re.
21 Cosí tutto il popolo del paese fu in festa e la città rimase tranquilla, quando Athaliah fu uccisa di spada.
