Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir Defeated
20 It happened after this that the people of (A)Moab with the people of (B)Ammon, and others with them besides the (C)Ammonites,[a] came to battle against Jehoshaphat. 2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from [b]Syria; and they are (D)in Hazazon Tamar” (which is (E)En Gedi). 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set [c]himself to (F)seek the Lord, and (G)proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 So Judah gathered together to ask (H)help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.
5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, 6 and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not (I)God in heaven, and (J)do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and (K)in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? 7 Are You not (L)our God, who (M)drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham (N)Your friend forever? 8 And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying, 9 (O)‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your (P)name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’ 10 And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir—whom You (Q)would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but (R)they turned from them and did not destroy them— 11 here they are, rewarding us (S)by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit. 12 O our God, will You not (T)judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but (U)our eyes are upon You.”
13 Now all Judah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children, stood before the Lord.
14 Then (V)the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: (W)‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, (X)for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the [d]brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. 17 (Y)You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, (Z)for the Lord is with you.”
18 And Jehoshaphat (AA)bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. 19 Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.
20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: (AB)Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.” 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, (AC)and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:
22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, (AF)the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. 23 For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they [e]had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, (AG)they helped to destroy one another.
24 So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped.
25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the [f]dead bodies, and precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of [g]Berachah, for there they blessed the Lord; therefore the name of that place was called The Valley of Berachah until this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had (AH)made them rejoice over their enemies. 28 So they came to Jerusalem, with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets, to the house of the Lord. 29 And (AI)the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his (AJ)God gave him rest all around.
The End of Jehoshaphat’s Reign(AK)
31 (AL)So Jehoshaphat was king over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32 And he walked in the way of his father (AM)Asa, and did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. 33 Nevertheless (AN)the [h]high places were not taken away, for as yet the people had not (AO)directed their hearts to the God of their fathers.
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, indeed they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, (AP)which is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.
35 After this (AQ)Jehoshaphat king of Judah allied himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, (AR)who acted very (AS)wickedly. 36 And he allied himself with him (AT)to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Ezion Geber. 37 But Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the Lord has destroyed your works.” (AU)Then the ships were wrecked, so that they were not able to go (AV)to Tarshish.

20 Dopo queste cose avvenne che i figli di Moab, i figli di Ammon ed altri con loro assieme agli Ammoniti vennero per combattere contro Giosafat.
2 Cosí giunsero alcuni a informare Giosafat, dicendo: «Una grande moltitudine si è mossa contro di te da oltre il mare dalla Siria; ecco, essi, sono in Hatsatson-Thamar» (che è En-Ghedi).
3 Allora Giosafat ebbe paura e si dispose a cercare l'Eterno, e proclamò un digiuno per tutto Giuda.
4 Cosí quei di Giuda si radunarono per cercare aiuto dall'Eterno, e da tutte le città di Giuda venivano a cercare l'Eterno.
5 Quindi Giosafat si levò in piedi in mezzo all'assemblea di Giuda e di Gerusalemme nella casa dell'Eterno davanti al cortile nuovo
6 e disse: «O Eterno, Dio dei nostri padri, non sei tu il DIO che è nel cielo? Sí, tu domini su tutti i regni delle nazioni; nelle tue mani sono la forza e la potenza e non c'è nessuno che ti possa resistere.
7 Non sei stato tu, il nostro DIO, che ha scacciato gli abitanti di questo paese davanti al tuo popolo Israele e l'ha dato per sempre alla discendenza del tuo amico Abrahamo?
8 Essi vi hanno dimorato e vi hanno costruito un santuario per il tuo nome dicendo:
9 "Se dovesse venire su di noi una calamità, la spada, il giudizio oppure la peste o la carestia, noi ci presenteremo davanti a questo tempio e davanti a te (poiché il tuo nome è in questo tempio) noi grideremo a te dalla nostra avversità e tu ci ascolterai e ci verrai in aiuto".
10 Ed ora, ecco i figli di Ammon, di Moab e quelli del monte Seir, nel cui territorio non permettesti a Israele di entrare quando essi uscivano dal paese d'Egitto (essi perciò si tennero da loro lontani e non li distrussero),
11 or ecco, essi ci ricompensano, venendo a scacciarci dalla tua eredità che ci hai dato da possedere.
12 O DIO nostro, non eseguirai tu il giudizio su di loro? Poiché noi siamo senza forza davanti a questa grande moltitudine che viene contro di noi; non sappiamo cosa fare, ma i nostri occhi sono su di te».
13 Ora tutti gli uomini di Giuda, con i loro bambini, le loro mogli e i loro figli, stavano in piedi davanti all'Eterno.
14 Allora nel mezzo dell'assemblea lo Spirito dell'Eterno investí Jahaziel, figlio di Zaccaria, figlio di Benaiah, figlio di Jeiel, figlio di Mattaniah, un Levita, dei figli di Asaf.
15 E questi disse: «Ascoltate, voi tutti di Giuda, voi abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu, o re Giosafat! Cosí vi dice l'Eterno: "Non temete, non sgomentatevi a motivo di questa grande moltitudine, perché la battaglia non è vostra, ma di DIO.
16 Domani scendete contro di loro; ecco, essi saliranno per la salita di Tsits e voi li troverete all'estremità della valle di fronte al deserto di Jeruel.
17 Non sarete voi a combattere in questa battaglia; prendete posizione, state fermi e vedrete la liberazione dell'Eterno, che è con voi, O Giuda, o Gerusalemme, non temete e non sgomentatevi domani uscite contro di loro, perché l'Eterno è con voi"».
18 Allora Giosafat chinò la faccia a terra, e tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostrarono davanti all'Eterno e lo adorarono
19 Poi i Leviti, dei figli dei Kehathiti e dei figli dei Korahiti, si levarono per lodare ad altissima voce l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele.
20 La mattina seguente si alzarono presto e partirono per il deserto di Tekoa; mentre si mettevano in cammino, Giosafat, stando in piedi, disse: «Ascoltatemi, o Giuda e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme! Credete nell'Eterno, il vostro DIO e sarete saldi; credete nei suoi profeti e prospererete».
21 Quindi, dopo essersi consigliato con il popolo, stabilí quelli che dovevano cantare all'Eterno e dovevano lodarlo per lo splendore della sua SANTITA
22 Quando essi cominciarono a cantare e a lodare, l'Eterno tese un'imboscata contro i figli di Ammon e di Moab, e quelli del monte Seir che erano venuti contro Giuda, e rimasero sconfitti.
23 I figli di Ammon e di Moab insorsero contro gli abitanti del monte Seir per votarli allo sterminio e distruggerli, quand'ebbero annientati gli abitanti di Seir, si aiutarono a distruggersi a vicenda.
24 Cosí, quando quelli di Giuda giunsero sull'altura da cui si poteva osservare il deserto, si volsero verso la moltitudine, ed ecco, non c'erano che cadaveri distesi per terra; nessuno era scampato.
25 Allora Giosafat e la sua gente andarono a portar via le loro spoglie; tra di loro trovarono una grande quantità di ricchezze sui loro cadaveri e di oggetti preziosi; ne presero per sé piú di quanto ne potessero portare; impiegarono tre giorni a portar via il bottino, tanto era copioso.
26 Il quarto giorno si radunarono nella Valle di Benedizione, dove benedissero l'Eterno; per questo quel luogo è stato chiamato Valle di Benedizione fino al giorno d'oggi.
27 Quindi tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, con Giosafat in testa, si misero in cammino con gioia per far ritorno a Gerusalemme, perché l'Eterno aveva loro dato motivo di rallegrarsi sui loro nemici.
28 Cosí entrarono in Gerusalemme con arpe, cetre e trombe, diretti alla casa dell'Eterno.
29 Il terrore di DIO cadde su tutti i regni degli altri paesi, quando vennero a sapere che l'Eterno aveva combattuto contro i nemici d'Israele.
30 Il regno di Giosafat fu tranquillo: il suo DIO gli concesse pace tutt'intorno.
31 Cosí Giosafat regnò sopra Giuda. Aveva trentacinque anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni a Gerusalemme; il nome di sua madre era Azubah, figlia di Scilhi.
32 Egli seguí in tutto le vie di Asa suo padre e non se ne allontanò, facendo ciò che è giusto agli occhi dell'Eterno.
33 Tuttavia gli alti luoghi non furono rimossi, perché il popolo non aveva ancora il cuore stabilmente rivolto al DIO dei suoi padri.
34 Il resto delle gesta di Giosafat, dalle prime alle ultime, sono scritte negli annuali di Jehu, figlio di Hanani, inseriti nel libro dei re d'Israele.
35 Dopo questo Giosafat, re di Giuda si alleò con Achaziah, re d'Israele, che agiva empiamente;
36 egli si alleò con lui per costruire navi che andassero a Tarshish; allestirono le navi a Etsion-Gheber.
37 Allora Eliezer, figlio di Dodavah di Mareshah, profetizzò contro Giosafat dicendo: «Poiché ti sei associato con Achaziah l'Eterno ha distrutto le tue opere». Cosí le navi si sfasciarono e non poterono andare a Tarshish

Josafat besegrar Moab och Ammon
20 Sedan kom Moabs barn och Ammons barn och tillsammans med dem andra ammoniter för att strida mot Josafat. 2 Man kom och berättade detta för Josafat och sade: "En stor skara kommer mot dig från landet på andra sidan havet, från Aram, och de är i Hasason-Tamar, det vill säga En-Gedi." 3 Då greps Josafat av fruktan och beslöt sig för att rådfråga Herren, och han utlyste en fasta över hela Juda. 4 Och Juda samlades för att söka hjälp hos Herren, och från alla Juda städer kom man för att söka Herren.
5 Josafat trädde upp i Juda mäns och Jerusalems församling i Herrens hus, framför den nya förgården. 6 Han sade: " Herre, våra fäders Gud, är inte du Gud i himmelen och den som råder över alla hednafolkens riken? I din hand är kraft och makt, och det finns ingen som kan stå dig emot. 7 Var det inte du, vår Gud, som fördrev detta lands invånare för ditt folk Israel och gav landet åt din vän Abrahams efterkommande för evig tid? 8 De bodde där, och de byggde där en helgedom åt ditt namn och sade: 9 Om något ont kommer över oss, svärd, straffdom eller pest eller hungersnöd, så vill vi träda fram inför detta hus och inför ditt ansikte, ty ditt namn är i detta hus, och vi vill ropa till dig ur djupet av vår bedrövelse, och du skall då höra och hjälpa. 10 Se nu, hur Ammons barn och Moab och folket i Seirs bergsbygd - det var deras område du inte tillät Israel att gå igenom, när de kom från Egyptens land, utan de tog en omväg bort ifrån dem och förgjorde dem inte - 11 se hur de nu lönar oss. De kommer för att driva bort oss från din besittning, som du har gett oss till arvedel. 12 Skall inte du, vår Gud, hålla dom över dem? Vi förmår ingenting mot denna stora skara som kommer mot oss, och vi vet inte vad vi skall göra, utan till dig är våra ögon vända."
13 Hela Juda stod inför Herren med sina små barn, sina hustrur och söner. 14 Då kom Herrens Ande mitt i församlingen över Jahasiel, son till Sakarja, son till Benaja, son till Jegiel, son till Mattanja, en levit av Asafs söner. 15 Han sade: "Lyssna, alla ni av Juda och ni Jerusalems invånare och du konung Josafat! Så säger Herren till er: Frukta inte och var inte förskräckta för denna stora skara, ty striden är inte er utan Guds. 16 Gå i morgon ner mot dem. De drar då upp på Hassishöjden, och ni skall träffa på dem där dalen tar slut, framför Jeruels öken. 17 Men då är det inte ni som skall strida. Ni skall endast träda fram och stå stilla, och ni skall få se Herrens frälsning. Han är med er, ni från Juda och Jerusalem. Frukta inte och var inte förskräckta. Gå i morgon ut mot dem, och Herren är med er."
18 Då böjde Josafat sig ner med ansiktet mot marken, och alla Juda män och Jerusalems invånare föll ner för Herren och tillbad Herren. 19 Och de leviter som hörde till kehatiternas och koraiternas folk, stod upp och lovade Herren, Israels Gud, med hög och stark röst.
20 Tidigt följande morgon gick de ut till Tekoas öken. Och när de drog ut, trädde Josafat fram och sade: "Hör mig, ni av Juda och ni Jerusalems invånare. Förtrösta på Herren, er Gud, så har ni ett säkert fäste. Lita på hans profeter, så skall det gå er väl." 21 Sedan han hade rådgjort med folket, ställde han upp sångare som skulle prisa Herren i helig skrud, medan de drog ut framför den beväpnade hären. De skulle sjunga:
"Tacka Herren,
ty hans nåd varar i evighet."
22 Och när de började att sjunga och lova, lät Herren ett angrepp komma bakifrån på Ammons barn och Moab och folket från Seirs bergsbygd, de som hade kommit mot Juda, och de blev slagna. 23 Ammons barn och Moab reste sig upp mot folket från Seirs bergsbygd för att ge dem till spillo och förgöra dem, och när de hade gjort slut på folket från Seir, hjälptes de åt att förgöra varandra.
24 När Juda män kom upp på höjden, varifrån man såg ut över öknen, vände de sig mot fiendeskaran, och se, där låg döda kroppar fallna på marken. Ingen hade kommit undan. 25 Och när Josafat kom med sitt folk för att plundra och ta byte från dem, fann de bland dem både gods och döda kroppar och värdesaker i stor mängd. De tog för sig så mycket att de inte kunde bära det, och de fortsatte plundringen i tre dagar, ty bytet var stort. 26 Men på fjärde dagen samlades de i Berakadalen.[a] Där välsignade de Herren, och därav fick platsen namnet Berakadalen, som den heter än i dag.
27 Därefter vände alla Juda och Jerusalems män, med Josafat i spetsen, glada tillbaka till Jerusalem, eftersom Herren hade låtit dem glädja sig över sina fiender. 28 De drog in i Jerusalem med psaltare, harpor och trumpeter och tågade till Herrens hus. 29 Och fruktan för Gud kom över alla länders riken, när de hörde att Herren hade stridit mot Israels fiender. 30 Josafats rike hade nu ro, ty hans Gud gav honom lugn på alla sidor.
Slutet av Josafats regering
31 Så regerade Josafat över Juda. Han var trettiofem år gammal när han blev kung, och han regerade tjugofem år i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Asuba och var dotter till Silhi. 32 Han vandrade på sin fader Asas väg och vek inte av från den, ty han gjorde det som var rätt i Herrens ögon. 33 Men offerhöjderna avskaffades inte, och folket hade ännu inte vänt sina hjärtan till sina fäders Gud.
34 Vad som mer finns att säga om Josafat, om hans första tid och om hans sista, det är skrivet i Jehus, Hananis sons, krönika som är upptagen i boken om Israels kungar.
35 Därefter ingick Josafat, Juda rikes kung, förbund med Ahasja, Israels kung, trots att denne levde ogudaktigt. 36 Josafat kom överens med honom att bygga skepp som skulle gå till Tarsis. De byggde fartygen i Esjon-Geber. 37 Då profeterade Elieser, Dodavahus son, från Maresa, mot Josafat och sade: "Eftersom du har ingått förbund med Ahasja, skall Herren låta ditt företag bli om intet." Och somliga av skeppen led skeppsbrott, så att de inte kunde gå till Tarsis.
