Preparativos para construir el templo
(1 R 5:1-18; 7:13-14)
2 Salomón decidió construir un templo en honor al SEÑOR y un palacio real para sí mismo. 2 Reclutó a unos 70 000 cargadores y 80 000 canteros para cortar madera y piedra en las montañas. Además designó 3600 capataces para dirigir la obra.
3 Salomón mandó decir a Hiram, rey de Tiro:
«Haz conmigo tal como hiciste con mi papá David mandándole cedro del Líbano para que se construyera un palacio donde vivir. 4 Es que voy a construir un templo en honor al SEÑOR mi Dios para consagrárselo, quemar incienso aromático en su honor, poner continuamente panes consagrados y ofrecer sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente por la mañana y por la tarde, los días de descanso, fiestas de Luna Nueva y en las demás fiestas del SEÑOR. Eso se hará por siempre en Israel.
5 »El templo que voy a construir será grande, porque nuestro Dios es más grande que todos los dioses. 6 Pero, ¿quién podrá construirle un templo si ni los cielos más profundos pueden contenerlo? ¿Quién soy yo para construir un templo aunque sólo sea para quemar incienso ante él?
7 »Envíame, pues, un experto en la fabricación de objetos de oro, plata, bronce, hierro, tela púrpura, roja y azul, y que sepa hacer grabados, para que trabaje con los expertos constructores que me dejó mi papá David. 8 Envíame también del Líbano madera de cedro, de ciprés y de sándalo. Yo sé que tus siervos tienen experiencia en cortar madera y los míos trabajarán junto a ellos. 9 Hay que preparar muchísima madera porque el templo que voy a construir será grande y maravilloso. 10 Les pagaré a tus hombres 9000 toneladas[a] de trigo, 9000 toneladas de cebada, 440 000 litros[b] de vino y 440 000 litros de aceite de oliva».
11 Hiram, rey de Tiro, le contestó con una carta que decía así:
«El SEÑOR te ha hecho rey de Israel porque ama a su pueblo». 12 También decía: «Bendito sea el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, que hizo el cielo y la tierra, porque le ha dado al rey David un hijo sabio, instruido e inteligente, el cual va a construir un templo en honor al SEÑOR y un palacio para su reino. 13 Te envío, pues, a un hombre sabio e inteligente, Hiram Abí. 14 Es hijo de una mujer proveniente de Dan y un hombre de la ciudad de Tiro. Además él es un experto metalúrgico y trabaja tanto el oro como la plata, el bronce y el hierro, así como también la piedra y la madera, tela púrpura y morada, y el lino y el carmesí. También es perito en grabados de toda clase de figuras y realiza el diseño que se le encargue en equipo con tus expertos y los de tu papá David.
15 »En cuanto al trigo, la cebada, el aceite y el vino que mencionas, envíaselos a mis siervos. 16 Nosotros cortaremos toda la madera que necesiten y se la enviaremos en forma de balsas por el mar, desde el Líbano hasta Jope. Ustedes entonces se encargarán de llevar la madera a Jerusalén».
17 Salomón hizo un censo de todos los hombres extranjeros que había en Israel. Este censo se hizo después del que hizo su papá David. El censo mostró que había 153 600 hombres extranjeros. 18 De ellos, él reclutó a 70 000 para que sirvieran como cargadores, a 80 000 para que sirvieran como canteros en la montaña y a 3600 como capataces para hacer trabajar a la gente.

2 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom.
2 And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.
3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.
4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the Lord our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.
5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.
6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?
7 Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.
8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,
9 Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great.
10 And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.
11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the Lord hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them.
12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build an house for the Lord, and an house for his kingdom.
13 And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father's,
14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be put to him, with thy cunning men, and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father.
15 Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants:
16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem.
17 And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.
18 And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourscore thousand to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.

Preparations for Building the Temple(A)
2 [a]Solomon gave orders to build a temple(B) for the Name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself.(C) 2 He conscripted 70,000 men as carriers and 80,000 as stonecutters in the hills and 3,600 as foremen over them.(D)
3 Solomon sent this message to Hiram[b](E) king of Tyre:
“Send me cedar logs(F) as you did for my father David when you sent him cedar to build a palace to live in. 4 Now I am about to build a temple(G) for the Name of the Lord my God and to dedicate it to him for burning fragrant incense(H) before him, for setting out the consecrated bread(I) regularly, and for making burnt offerings(J) every morning and evening and on the Sabbaths,(K) at the New Moons(L) and at the appointed festivals of the Lord our God. This is a lasting ordinance for Israel.
5 “The temple I am going to build will be great,(M) because our God is greater than all other gods.(N) 6 But who is able to build a temple for him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain him?(O) Who then am I(P) to build a temple for him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before him?
7 “Send me, therefore, a man skilled to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, and in purple, crimson and blue yarn, and experienced in the art of engraving, to work in Judah and Jerusalem with my skilled workers,(Q) whom my father David provided.
8 “Send me also cedar, juniper and algum[c] logs from Lebanon, for I know that your servants are skilled in cutting timber there. My servants will work with yours 9 to provide me with plenty of lumber, because the temple I build must be large and magnificent. 10 I will give your servants, the woodsmen who cut the timber, twenty thousand cors[d] of ground wheat, twenty thousand cors[e] of barley, twenty thousand baths[f] of wine and twenty thousand baths of olive oil.(R)”
11 Hiram king of Tyre replied by letter to Solomon:
“Because the Lord loves(S) his people, he has made you their king.”
12 And Hiram added:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth!(T) He has given King David a wise son, endowed with intelligence and discernment, who will build a temple for the Lord and a palace for himself.
13 “I am sending you Huram-Abi,(U) a man of great skill, 14 whose mother was from Dan(V) and whose father was from Tyre. He is trained(W) to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone and wood, and with purple and blue(X) and crimson yarn and fine linen. He is experienced in all kinds of engraving and can execute any design given to him. He will work with your skilled workers and with those of my lord, David your father.
15 “Now let my lord send his servants the wheat and barley and the olive oil(Y) and wine he promised, 16 and we will cut all the logs from Lebanon that you need and will float them as rafts by sea down to Joppa.(Z) You can then take them up to Jerusalem.”
17 Solomon took a census of all the foreigners(AA) residing in Israel, after the census(AB) his father David had taken; and they were found to be 153,600. 18 He assigned(AC) 70,000 of them to be carriers and 80,000 to be stonecutters in the hills, with 3,600 foremen over them to keep the people working.
