¹⁰ Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.

The Vanity of Toil

¹⁸ I hated ^(A)all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must ^(B)leave it to the man who will come after me, ¹⁹ and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.

Solomon Worships at Gibeon

1 ^(A)Solomon the son of David established himself in his kingdom, ^(B)and the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.

^23 (A)Then Solomon sat on the ^(B)throne of the Lord as king in place of David his father. And he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him.

^15 (A)For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are ^(B)like a shadow, and there is no abiding.^[a]

⁵ And of ^(A)all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons) he ^(B)has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.

¹¹ When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.

⁶ And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because ^(A)he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and ^(B)have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. ⁷ And now, O Lord my God, ^(C)you have made your servant king in place of David my father, ^(D)although I am but a little child. I do not know ^(E)how to go out or come in.

^12 (A)So Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.
