²¹ Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign; he reigned two years in Jerusalem.^(A)

Boasting about Tomorrow

¹³ Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.”^{(A) 14} Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.^{(B) 15} Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.”^(C)

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’^{(A) 20} But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’^(B)

Reign of Manasseh

33 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.^(A)

Amon Reigns over Judah

¹⁹ Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign; he reigned two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Meshullemeth daughter of Haruz of Jotbah.^{(A) 20} He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done.^{(B) 21} He walked in all the way in which his father walked, served the idols that his father served, and worshiped them; ²² he abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors, and did not walk in the way of the Lord.^{(C) 23} The servants of Amon conspired against him and killed the king in his house.^{(D) 24} But the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against King Amon, and the people of the land made his son Josiah king in place of him.
