⁵ Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall^(A) and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the terraces^[a](B) of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons^(C) and shields.

²³ Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah,^[a] at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate^(A) to the Corner Gate^(B)—a section about four hundred cubits^[b] long.

²⁴ After Pharaoh’s daughter^(A) had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces.^(B)

⁴ Then the city wall was broken through,^(A) and the whole army fled at night through the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden, though the Babylonians^[a] were surrounding^(B) the city. They fled toward the Arabah,^[b]

⁹ David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces^[a](A) inward.

⁴ When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls,^(A) and headed toward the Arabah.^[a](B)

¹⁴ Uzziah provided shields, spears, helmets, coats of armor, bows and slingstones for the entire army.^{(A) 15} In Jerusalem he made devices invented for use on the towers and on the corner defenses so that soldiers could shoot arrows and hurl large stones from the walls. His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful.

⁸ The Ammonites^(A) brought tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, because he had become very powerful.
